Reflective Personal Essay over Sophomore Year
My sophomore year has flown by. I have now completed my eleventh year of school at Carl Junction. I have enjoyed many memories, gained valuable knowledge that I will use for the rest of my life, and most importantly, created many new friendships.
My first quarter of my sophomore year went by in a flash. I was involved in several sports. Sadly, I didn’t make the volleyball team. Because of that, I got involved in softball. I was a manager, so I got to take pitching stats for Sydney Beck, our varsity pitcher. I enjoyed my classes this year too. I liked my science classes, such as CP Chemistry and CP Biology. I also took fun classes, such as FACS and Child Development. I had high hopes that the 2nd Quarter would be as good as or better than first quarter.

In November, I made the Pittsburg, Kansas Star Aquila, also known as PKSA, volleyball team. I was exuberant when I made it and was ready for the season to start. Unfortunately, I fractured my cuboid bone in my right foot at volleyball practice. Because of that break, I was unable to compete in volleyball club season this year. The cast on my foot was a plaster shackle. Conversely, my school quarter was even better. At the end of my quarter I made ‘A’s and two ‘A-’s. I was content with my grades. I had hopes that my third quarter would bring healing to my foot and that my classes would be as fabulous, or even much better than second

Even though I lost so much during junior year, I was unaware of the fact that secretly I was actually gaining a great deal of life experiences and real-life lessons for the future. Quite honestly I feel lucky. I feel lucky that I matured early in life; with this new maturity I feel I can accomplish anything. I feel I can make a positive difference in this world. I feel like this experience will be the primary step in my success, in terms of my career, and in the launch of my Children in Need campaigns in third world countries. I feel like the young superman who just learned how to fly, slightly aware of his magnificent impact towards the world. In short, I feel junior year provided foundation for the more mature and adult chapters of my life, and without the numerous obstacles of junior year, I would never gained the key to a successful future.
Softball was my main sport, but I did everything else until it was time to play softball. I fell in love with softball at an early age. I would play every summer or I was asked to play which helped me travel all over the place and meet new friends. Each year I played my love for the sport grew more and more. I played on multiple teams throughout the summer. Playing with one of my teams I gained the advantage to visit Santé Fe, New Mexico two years in a row to play softball. When I reached 8th grade I was excited about playing for the high school softball team until I figured out how it really was. Although I was not happy about having to sit on the bench, but I understood that I had to earn the privilege to play, and that the upperclassman were more seasoned.
During the course of the quarter, I feel that I have progressed somewhat. I've gained a lot of knowledge on rhetorical strategies and how to present arguments effectively. In the writings I have written, I feel that each writing works towards meeting the course goals. Logos, ethos, and pathos were strategies and ideas we were introduced to (if not already in the past) and were built upon throughout the quarter. The knowledge gained over the course of the quarter weren't only those three types of appeals. Rhetorical strategies like proposals helped reinforce the course and using rhetorical analysis in different situations have become easier throughout the quarter. I believe that I have made sufficient progress towards becoming a better writer this way.
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
I have always had a strong belief that I could pass college like I did in high school. Always relying on those quick study sessions before a test or having the teacher going over the material right before a test. But boy was I wrong. In my first test I learned the hard way that studying is essential in college.
I have a very active lifestyle resulting in a wide variety of interests outside of the classroom. I have always had a deep life-long passion for sports. I represented my high schools varsity volleyball and basketball teams as well as partaking in an adult slow-pitch softball league throughout high school and into college. Other sports and activities I enjoy include Tae-kwon-do, soccer, fast-pitch softball, tennis, callisthenic and weighted workouts, running, hiking and biking.
One thing that people often overlook when writing an essay is not what the college can do for you, but what you can do for the college. With that in mind the attributes that I possess would make a great addition to and benefit the college greatly. My ability to speak in front of large crowds, lead, and my thirst for knowledge have sshasfdafy
The process of preparing for college is an arduous process. College is an instrument used to have a successful life. However, getting into college is difficult. The competition for college admittance is extremely high. Most students do not take the necessary actions to ensure their admittance. Consequently, many students do not get attend their ideal college. Therefore, I have taken steps to make certain that I attend the college of my choice, By taking care of my class ranking, actively participating in school functions, and researching my intended degree, I have set myself up to attend the college of my choice.
First, I would like to thank the Louie F. Cox Memorial AK Steel Foundation and the Middletown Community Foundation for their continued support as I pursue my education. My first year at Case Western Reserve University has been incredible and I found many opportunities to grow academically, spiritually, and socially. During my first few weeks on campus, I joined the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and also earned a seat on the executive board as membership chair. NSBE has allowed me to enhance my networking skills, advocate for diversity, and engage with the campus community. I also mentored high school students through the NSBE Jr. program and volunteered at engineering-themed events throughout the greater Cleveland area. A major highlight of this year was attending the National NSBE Convention in Kansas City, MO and meeting Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. His advice on finding a career in Silicon Valley was especially helpful, as I declared my academic path: a double major in computer science and business management (with a specialization in supply chain management) and a minor in data science.
Senior year. The year known for its “lasts” of everything and the start of one 's adulthood. It’s also a busy part of life- college applications, college acceptance, graduation, and even get to know what the terminal disease “senioritis” feels like. Senior year is the last year that I will get the chance to cheer on the football team every Friday night, running track every Thursday, as well as seeing my favorite teachers on a day to day basis. This year is my year, the year that is going to change everything that I have ever known. Senior year is the year that will impact myself, my friends, my family, as well as everyone that surrounds me. It will be the year of change.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. My senior year of high school…I want to enjoy people’s company, appreciate my family’s presence, and keep a permanent Polaroid of my “home town” etched in my memory. I have a purpose for the year, I know what I want to accomplish for the future, but I have to remember to make the most out of today because there may not always be a tomorrow.
In one word I would describe sophomore year as resilience, since it was filled with numerous moments where it was good or bad outcomes. But the good outweighs the bad. I learned constantly going to my professors’ office aided in the lessening of unanswered question in the back of your mind. Then study groups have become my BFF for it has allowed myself to interact with some classmates that help me understand the concepts and I helped them as well. This succor my study skills to flourish so much.
Having spent twelve years of my school life in just one small red brick building, the years tend to fade into each other. But the year I remember most clearly and significantly is my senior year of high school, where I finally began to appreciate what this institution offered to any student who stopped to look. Before, school had been a chore, many times I simply did not feel motivated toward a subject enough to do the homework well, and seeing the same familiar faces around ever since I was 5 years old grew very tiring soon enough. But I began to see things from a different angle once I became a senior.
