When people sit down and reflect on their lives, they look at the things that they’ve achieve and the things that they wanted to achieve, but didn’t get to. Most of the times when people sit down and reflect on their lives they consider themselves to be successful or to be a failure; there really isn’t any in between. There are a lot of things that people take into consideration when they analyze their lives and how they’ve succeeded at doing the things they truly wanted to. One of the most important things that I think most people take into consideration when analyzing their lives is whether or not they were successful in the workforce, growing up in the type of society that we have and have had, we are taught that the things you have matter. …show more content…
We’ve lost touch in what’s important in life, instead we focus on the things that we want to own, rather that the things that we can’t own, but are blessed to have. We spend our lives working towards things that don’t truly matter in the end; wasting our time on things that shouldn’t be worked towards. Some people work their entire lives focusing on the things that don’t matter, allowing their lives to go to waste. The amount of time that is spent getting towards those useless things could have been and can be spent working towards things that truly matter. For example, some of the most important things in our lives is our family, friends, and how we live our lives. There are some of us who go through life working towards stupid things, for them it’s hard to look back and call themselves successful. Those people who spend their lives working towards things that truly don’t matter could very easily relate to a character by the name of Ivan Ilyich. If you are not familiar with the story behind this man allow me to bring you up to speed, Ilyich was a very successful judge, one day he slipped and fell on his side while trying to remodel his
Generally speaking, success isn’t just about what you accomplish in life, it’s how you accomplished it and the impact you
Success has a different meaning for every person on Earth. The majority of people define success as an individual’s “attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence” (Success). In accordance with the rest of society, Malcolm Gladwell defines success as an individual’s accumulation of “a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities” given by the environment to help a person succeed in the business world (Gladwell 155). Advantages come in the forms of birth dates, learning styles, work ethics, demographic luck, and job needs. Similarly, opportunities given by the environment circulate around a person’s ability to complete “ten thousand hours… of greatness” (41). Before reading Gladwell’s book “Outliers: The Story of Success”, I would have complied with society’s and Gladwell’s
The story of In "The Death of Ivan Ilych", was written by Leo Tolstoy around who examines the life of a man, Ivan Ilyich, who would seem to have lived an exemplary life with moderate wealth, high station, and family. By story's end, however, Ivan's life will be shown to be devoid of passion -- a life of duties, responsibilities, respect, work, and cold objectivity to everything and everyone around Ivan. It is not until Ivan is on his death bed in his final moments that he realizes that materialism had brought to his life only envy, possessiveness, and non-generosity and that the personal relationships we forge are more important than who we are or what we own.
“Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude.” (Michelle Obama). From this quote we should learn that your success is up to you. You determine how successful you are not anyone else. This means you need to work hard in order to have a successful life and be a successful person. You and only you determine your
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
Throughout this semester I have written several essays and journals using techniques both important and unfamiliar to me. This class helped me use these techniques and steps that are involved in creating and formalizing an essay. The writing process of an essay includes information gathering, creating ideas, and writing it on paper to create a cohesive and organized paper. In complete certainty I can say I lack many of the skills necessary to create such a paper, but during this course I have learned some writing methods which I believe have improved my essays. The essays and journals in this portfolio reveal both my strengths and weaknesses in my writing and how I have both continued to make the same errors and improved in other areas.
Sociology is something I didn’t know about until I took this class. This class introduced sociology to me. I learned about how society basically made boys supposed to like blue and girls supposed to like pink. Sociology is “the systematic or scientific study of human society and social behavior, from large-scale institutions and mass culture to small groups and individual interactions” (Ferris and stein 2014: p9). Sociology is not something you just learn when you are just born. You learn about sociology throughout your life. Sociology is displayed around things such as being around different environments, friends, and family. Education is a sociology idea that can examine a person’s class and schooling. The higher the education you have,
Shakespeare wrote, “To thine own self be true.” The beginning of Social Change encompasses the beliefs, qualities, and values of individuals. Change is inevitable whether virtuous or corrupt. Consequently, in society virtuous and corrupt change is present. Thus, individuals must be conscious of self in order to contribute effectively to a group. In addition, surety in one’s philosophies, abilities, standards enables the individual to establish sound opinions based on these defined attributes. Nevertheless, individuals with substantial flaws in their character poses a threat to the survival of self, a group, and a community. In other words, the individual becomes an endangered species; as well as, an endangerment to the survival of a group or community. Educators have the stage to assist in promoting positive social change. Therefore, I work to influence social change through educating the minds of our youths and mentoring new teachers.
My portfolio absolutely reflects my understanding of persuasive writing. Persuasive writing is the ability to use certain word choices in order to convince an audience to agree, or a least grasp, the topic that is being written about. My portfolio represents the goals and objectives of persuasive writing. The essays I have written for this course demonstrate that I have certainly developed my critical thinking skills, and also developed, or better yet, mastered my communication and personal responsibility skills; but, because terms of my lack of paraphrasing and analysis, my writing process is not perfected.
Social class can be defined in a variety of ways. As Alexander Hamilton once said, “all communities divide themselves into the few and the many”. To elaborate on Hamilton’s words, social class is what divides society into different rankings based on several factors. Amongst these factors are income, wealth, occupation, personal prestige, association, socialization, power, class consciousness and social mobility. As a result, these are the factors that define us as human beings in regards to society. A person’s well being is overall, heavily dependent upon this system of stratification in that it helps decide who gets what and the quality of the things that a person is receiving. This concept is defined as life chances developed by sociologist
What is the sociological perspective of human behavior? How is it applied to the study of juvenile delinquency?
This is a reflective writing essay, based on what I learned this semester in my sociology 1013.51 Introduction to Sociology. I am going to discuss a few of the concepts and lessons that I have learned in class and from my instructor.
There are many social problems plaguing the world, including the issue of aging inequality and elders. This social problem is significant because the baby boomers of the 1946-64s are now starting to be the youngest old. Our society is starting to, and needs to, change to accommodate the needs of the elderly. There are many different problems coming with this making people have many political viewpoints, theoretical perspectives, and solutions for this social problem. Baby boomers are a group of people that were born between the years of 1946 and 1964. Just nine months after WW II ended people were having babies at rates higher than ever before. In the year 1946 there were 3.4 million babies were born, nearly 20% more than the prior year. This
The question, “ What makes a good society” is never the same for every individual that comes across trying to answer this sociological question. What may work in one society, may not work in another. But I am guessing you already new that. Depending on the type of culture, location and era; a good society can be anything. If you were to have been raised in the western side of the world, your good society is one of a democracy. Where the people have power and we have checks and balances in our government. But what if you were raised in the east, were people live in a socialist-communistic society. Where the government has the power and people are treated equally. Who is to say which type of society is “good”?
Safety and freedom for social disorder and problems: we could reduce poverty, crime, jealousy, and allow all people to enjoy life by fixing minimum wages to all people and by awarding other people for working hard with extra bonuses.
