The self assessment test was eye opening. It addressed skills that I needed to improve on,it also addressed skills that I do well at. I have neglected some of the skills listed, the assessment gave me a sense of a “need to improve” attitude. This Journey is not going to be easy,but my expectations is nothing short of improving it. Now that I know where I stand in my weaknesses and strength I can start the journey.

I would compare improving my writing skill to running on the treadmill. Working out is boring to me but it is something that needs to happen to staying healthy. I am the king of procrastination, I feel that if I can make the time and put in the effort, everything listed could be improved. I get bored with learning, I need to develop a fun environment by using the skills that I enjoy using to develop the weaker skills. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. As Roth states in Strengths Finder 2.0, we as a present day world tend to focus on and try to overcome our weaknesses rather that building up our strengths. Using our natural talents can help us do the best we can and help us be a better asset. After taking the strengths assessment, I found that my top five strengths themes ended up being: relator, discipline, competition, responsibility, and significance.
There have been many contributors when it came to tackling anti-social behaviour and preventing crime however, the most influential contributors are Wilson and Kelling. They came up with the theory of broken window which will be further explain in this essay. This essay will outline the broken window theory, as well as explain what is meant by broken window. My five strengths according to the strength finder include; balance, this helps me be aware of treating all people equally regardless of the situation. In that publication, George L. Kelling and James Q. Wilson had their essay “Broken Windows: The Police and Neighborhood Safety” published. The essay was meant to address crime within neighborhoods, and based on the ideas in the essay the broken windows theory emerged. The basis for the idea was that if a neighborhood allowed one broken window to stay broken, then the neighborhood would soon suffer more broken windows. The idea of the theory is that serious crimes such as murder and rape are enabled by misdemeanor level crimes like public intoxication, vandalism, prostitution, loitering, and vagrancy type crimes. Within the belief of the theory, people are not naturally bad individuals. It is the environment in which they are raised and they live in that is responsible for their criminal behavior. To respond to these lower level crimes, the essay says that patrol officers should be encouraged, or managed to get out of their police cars and walk the beat. This way, they are mingling amongst the citizens and building good relationships with the people that live in those neighborhoods. In the 1980s the New York Transit Authority hired Kelling as a consultant, and he urged them to put the broken window theory into play. They listened to Kelling and brought in a new subway director, David Gunn. He was in charge of the rebuilding of the subway system. Many subway advocates told Gunn to worry about more serious issues and to leave the graffiti alone. Gunn did not agree; he was a follower of the broken window theory. In his mind, the graffiti was the cause of the crash of the subway system. The first thing he wanted to do was clean up the trains. One by one the graffiti was removed off of the trains. If a train had graffiti on it, it was called a “dirty car.” The dirty cars had to be cleansed of graffiti before going back on the railroad, or it was removed from service. Gunn’s graffiti cleanup took from 1984 to 1990. At this time, the Transit Authority hired William Bratton to head the transit police. Bratton was also a follower of the broken window theory. He decided to start taking fare-beating more serious. Just like Gunn’s idea of the graffiti, Bratton thought the fare-beating was the start to bigger crimes. My strengths would be extraversion and conscientiousness. I definitely find my extraversion as a strength, because it helps me network with ease. I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Self assessment is a process in which you examine yourself in attempt to discover and learn more about yourself. Your likes, dislikes, behaviors, attitudes and habits can be found during this process. You can use the discoveries to your advantage by accepting or changing strengths and weaknesses. I plan on using this course to enhance my personal skills to become a better student and find success in earning my Bachelor of Arts degree at Ashford University in Social Science. Well I guess I’ll start off this paper by being outright honest. I have never done this type of self-assessment exercise. So I’ll start this paper off with what exactly this type of self-assessment is. These types of self-assessments are meant to help show the individual (me) where my strengths lie and also where my weaknesses are as well so that I may try and lean on my strengths while improving on my own shortcomings. Essentially the Johari Window four regions model that we learned about is a great tool for this assessment. The first region is also known as the open area, which essentially means that this is what is known by the person about him/herself and is also know by others. The second region is known as the blind area in which this is information unknown by the individual but is known by others. Which could be behaviors that an individual does but does not realize that they are doing them. The third window is known as the hidden area. This area is essentially information that only you know about yourself and others do not. The fourth area is known as the unknown area. It’s known as that because this is information that you and others do not know about you. It’s when you take a look at these four areas and see your strengths and/or weaknesses are at and if you allow yourself to become open to feedback you then can improve on your own shortcomings and become a better leader.
My greatest weakness is being able to say no. due to the energetic person that I am, I tend to take on tasks that are required of me and even beyond me. I view it this way of not wanting to appear negative or a lazy person when I say no. This in turn creates lots of stress and pressure in me due to my effort to get things done even when it is not convenient. I am currently working on this weakness and learning how to politely refuse tasks when am over stressed. Being over stressed reduces the quality of care given to patients and that is why I only plan to embark on tasks that I could finish at a time, rather than taking numerous that I would perform poorly in.
