The reading defines public health as “the science of protecting and improving the health of communities thru education and research, for disease and injury prevention, and promotion of healthy lifestyles.” In other words, public health is the ways in which we can improve health in our communities through a variety of methods. Public health is relevant to everyone and plays a major role in everyone’s life. While attending UC Berkeley, I am actively participating and enjoying the aids of public health policy at the university. Five instances in which I interacted with these benefits directly during this week was through the use of a vaccination, reading nutritional facts, putting on a seatbelt, receiving emails from the Tang Center, and finally by attending a smoke free campus school zone. A vaccination is an injection of a substance that is used to prevent you from being infected by the disease or virus. Vaccinations are extremely necessary for preventative …show more content…
measures for you and for the people who could have been affected if you had the virus. On Wednesday of this week I went to the Tang Center to receive my second dose of Hepatitis B shot in the 3 part series. Tang center provides vaccinations and also, sends emails informing students and staff of Berkeley about the measles outbreak. This is a form of public health because it is informing those who have not received the vaccine to get vaccinated. It also promotes an awareness of a viruses that you can contract. Vaccinations are a great policy in public health because it reduces the amount of people who can contract the virus and promotes an overall healthier lifestyle. Nutritional facts are a great display of public health in action, because it clearly forms all of the ingredients and other nutritional information on a food in which the consumer is able to make an informed decision on if this item is something they would like to purchase.
Consumers make a conscience choice of what they decided to eat. Another act of public policy that we almost take for granted in today’s time is the use of seatbelts. Seatbelts are crucial in reducing the injury and risk in a car accident. This week while I was inside of an Uber I felt a sense of gratitude to the public health activist that forced seat-belt wearing to become a law. And when I arrived on the campus I was also extremely grateful for those activist who made UC Berkeley a smoke free campus. Second hand smoke can cause many of the same medical issues as smoking. By making Berkeley a smoke free campus many thousands of students and employers on campus are protected from the negative effects of inhaling another person’s
smoke. Two ways that UC Berkeley can create a healthier campus community is by adding hand-sanitizers stations around campus that are readily assessable. This will decrease the spread of germs and will ideally result in less people being sick on campus. Berkeley can raise public health awareness by continuing to offer classes like Public Health 116 that fulfills a breadth requirement. That way more people will be interested in joining the class and as a result can learn more about public health.
First off I am going to begin with the basics; what is a vaccine? Well a vaccine is a product that produces immunity from a disease it can be administered through needle injections, by mouth, or by aerosol. (Basics, n.d.) Sounds simple right well that leads people to wonder how do they work? They help develop immunity by acting as the infection, it is only acting as the infection so
Protection). A Vaccine is an injection given to children and adults. These injections help prevent
A vaccination is the injection of weak disease-causing agents that help the body develop immunity against specific infectious diseases ("Why Are Childhood Vaccines So Important?"). It is through these vaccinations that children will develop immunity without suffering from the actual diseases that vaccines prevent ("Why Are Childhood Vaccines So Important?"). The field of medicine has come a long way. Vaccines are considered to be one of the public health’s greatest accomplishments to date. With the help of vaccines and public health, the overall goal is to prevent disease and promote health.
The theory used for this case study was effective, because it was able to get P to recognise that change need to occur so the support that she received would be effective. Reflecting on action the outcome of the assessment and intervention that was applied to P’s case I used supervision and to discuss concerns I had regarding this family with my PS. Supervision helped me establish my concerns and areas I required further support in application to theory in evidence based practice ‘blind self’.
The purpose of vaccinations is to help the immune system handle the illness without exposing to the illness first as “Vaccines contain the same antigens (or parts of antigens) that cause diseases…the antigens in vaccines are either killed, or weakened to the point that they don’t cause disease...immune system produce antibodies that lead to immunity”("Why Are Childhood Vaccines So Important?") This means that Vaccines have the same pieces of a regular disease but has been manipulated in some shape or form that cannot infect the vaccine receiver. Almost as if the body is exposed to the illness already, but not quite like having the body fight off the disease but rather receive the ability to fight contact with any disease they are vaccinated against. Without vaccination, some illnesses can be fought off with the immune system alone, such as chicken pox and measles, and then would have the immune system protect by using the to fight against it. However, there are more fatal diseases, such as Polio, that has the ability to paralyze the body of anyone infected and even cause death if not treated right away
Vaccinations are designed to help people go through their everyday life. A country doctor, Edward Jenner, who lived in Berkeley, England, first administered vaccines in 1796 (Health Affairs). Throughout history, vaccinations have become better to where they are safer for the human body. Everyone should get vaccinated against certain disease to stay healthy. Vaccines have been proven to make people immune to serious diseases (Childhood Immunization). By being vaccinated the person is not only helping themselves but others around them too. Vaccines are an important tool for preventing disease and should be mandatory for all people.
35% of rape attacks go unreported annually. This is because the victims are afraid to speak up about what happened, and afraid that they may not get the proper help. The team of detectives in the TV series, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, helps to communicate with victims of sexual assault to help them come forward and solve the crimes that were committed. Communication is an important job in helping to solve these cases. After a quick summary of the TV series, I will be showing how the concepts of communication we learned in class, Self-fulfilling prophecy, prejudice, practicing active listening, and cohesiveness, help the team solve the crimes.
Understanding the difference between vaccine, vaccination and immunization may be difficult. Even though these words are associated with each other, they have different meanings. According the article basics, a vaccine produces immunity from a disease and can be administered through needle injection, orally, or aerosol. Vaccination is the injection of a killed or weakened organism that produces immunity in the body against the organism. Immunization is the process that produces immunity in the body against that organism. Vaccinations reduce the risk of Polio, Smallpox and Scarlet Fever by operating with the body’s natural defenses to develop immunities to these diseases. Depending on if a parent desires protection from disease or is concerned
Public health as it is implicated in the lives of the community – it is important to conceptualise what this might mean. Moreover, public health has seen as a multidiscipline perspective in which it can be defined on many levels, and I find that it could be elusive to understand its meaning. By simple understanding of public health, I refer to an approach derived by Winslow (1920) and Baggott (2000).
Education is neither linear nor static. It requires evolution and fluctuations. I received my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at UNC Charlotte, and now it is time for a prime conversion to be made. Attending the Masters of Public Health program at UNC Charlotte would open the door for me to pursue my career aspirations in health care. Specifically, I am interested in epidemiological methods in community health. My ambition, perseverance, and work ethic have brought me to a high point, and enrolling in the Masters in Public Health program would raise that threshold even higher.
Immunisation or vaccination is a very effective and safe form of medicine used to prevent severe diseases occurring from viruses and other infectious organisms and increase the amount of protective antibodies. It is given by drops in the mouth or injecting a person with a dead or modified disease-causing agent, in order for the person to become immune to that disease.
I have always been intrigued by the field of science and that is the reason I pursued the field of Biochemistry for my undergraduate studies. How The Human body works and the different determinants that can affect one's health or a community as a whole have always been captivating to me. I wanted to emerge in a profession that is beneficial for me, my community, and the world I live in. I came to realize through various science courses and health care experiences that a career in health care was the best path for me to outreach my community and the world.
At an early stage in my medical school in Iraq, I realized the great positive impact of public health on the community in health education orientation, disease prevention and health well-being as a general and what affirmed it later, my clinical practice as a physician in Iraq first then Dubai later. Public health was a major integral block in my clinical practice to educate the people towards a healthier lifestyle and implementing the preventative screening measures necessary to get a healthy, well protected community. After moving to the United States, I took the initiative to familiarize myself with the US healthcare system by doing many clinical rotations in different family practices and pediatric clinics in Houston, TX. After these rotations, I was enamored with the delivery of public health measures in each clinic, according to the US public health standards. My fondness for public health drove me to get an opportunity to be a health educator
Public Health is the science of preventing disease and promoting health through many different ideas and functions by informing society and different community-based organizations. The idea behind Public Health is to protect and serve; it helps improve the lives of countless individuals through promoting a healthier lifestyle, education, research, prevention, detection, and response management. From the beginning, the idea of Public Health has become a stepping-stone that is essential to the longevity of humans and the environment. As society progresses and new advents are created or modified, Public Health
There are numerous public health problems that can be addressed in my Southside of Chicago community. Among the several public health problems facing my Southside of Chicago community there are two that are more urgent. Health education or one might say lack thereof is a problem that needs to be addressed. My community is plagued with many of the residents suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and the killer virus known as HIV. In most cases these conditions can be prevented with healthier lifestyles and access to nutritious organic foods. In addition, environmental health is another urgent problem my community is facing. Access to clean, safe water and air is supposed to be a fundamental human right aimed at a healthy environment. Yet, my community consists a waste contaminated beach, numerous deteriorated building that are still occupied, and a countless number of restaurant and stores supplying our residents with services that are endangering their health.
