Reflection
Dear Committee members, Taking English 22 this semester has been a big impact for me as a writer. When I first started I had no clue how to write a strong essay. Throughout the course I managed to learn different sets of skills in order to become a more confident and powerful writer. Honestly writing was never a passion of mine but I learned that writing can be very important because writing is used in everyday life.
For my portfolio I have chosen my in-class essay #1 and my review essay. Reason being is because I can personally relate to both essay because of personal experience. another reason why I chose my first in-class essay is because it shows my writing level and how I started off. It was one of our first essay
On the 1st of November 2013, I performed my first simulation on the module, Foundation Skills for Nursing. This simulation was on checking for vital signs in patients particularly, measuring the blood pressure (BP) which is the force of blood vessels against the walls of the vessels (Marieb and Hoehn, 2010). We also measured the temperature, pulse and respiratory (TPR) rates of a patient. This simulation’s objective was to engage us in practising some basic observation techniques taken on patients in and out of hospitals and to familiarise us on some of the tasks we will be performing when in practise. I will be applying the “What”, “So what”, and “Now what” model of reflection in nursing by Driscoll (2000).
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. During the course of the quarter, I feel that I have progressed somewhat. I've gained a lot of knowledge on rhetorical strategies and how to present arguments effectively. In the writings I have written, I feel that each writing works towards meeting the course goals. Logos, ethos, and pathos were strategies and ideas we were introduced to (if not already in the past) and were built upon throughout the quarter. The knowledge gained over the course of the quarter weren't only those three types of appeals. Rhetorical strategies like proposals helped reinforce the course and using rhetorical analysis in different situations have become easier throughout the quarter. I believe that I have made sufficient progress towards becoming a better writer this way.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
English 102 has taught me a lot about my writing. Becoming a better writer and pushing myself to the next level was my goal for this semester. Therefore, I learned how to use research to back up my arguments. We wrote many different essays based on different types of literature, which is something I had not done before. Initially, I had a few problems, but learned from those mistakes to become better at writing. I definitely have things that I need to work on in the future. However, looking back on my semester I have overcome many of my writing obstacles and have become a better writer.
As I look back on my first semester of English at Tri-C, I can tell that I have grown in my writing ability. The changes that I have made will impact my writing style and techniques for the rest of my time in college and life. I will need to use many of the different strategies I used this semester for writing my essays through out my college transfer process. After completing my Associates of Applied Sciences Degree through the Recording Arts and Technology program I will be transferring to Baldwin Wallace to complete a Bachelors Degree in Music Business. I hope that I get the change to put all that I have learned this semester to good use in the future, I know that I have learned a lot and have enjoyed so. Thank you for teaching such a great class, it was a great way to start off my college career!
To be completely honest, this year has been nothing short of a disaster. Partially due to this class, which it is my fault for taking the class in the first place when I was obviously not qualified to take an AP Literature class. It started out fun, but became more and more stressful as the year went on. My mental capacity has reached its limit, and my physical health isn 't in the best condition either due to the late nights I have spent on homework. However, despite it all, I have learned a great deal from this class. Not only from the curriculum, but I have also learned some of my own limitations and realized some faults that I need to mend. This class tested my patience and my temper, which I had only discovered
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
Over the course of time in Honors English IV, I wrote many different self reflection essays to reflect on the assignments and tests from different units. In total I wrote five of them and they helped me a lot throughout the semester to manage my time in a more effective manner. It also helped me pay attention more, not only in class, but to my friends and family. These self reflections really helped me to understand my strengths and weaknesses. I found out that one of my strengths is writing poems and this was my favorite assignment throughout the whole class. I also found out that I lack in time managing my work. Overall, these self reflection essays effectively helped me scoring better on assignments and tests throughout the semester.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company, once said, “Coming together is a process; keeping together is progress; working together is success” (Ford). Ford’s quote captures my entire Launch experience into one thought. Over the course of four days, I learned more about myself than I probably have in the past four years. As well as learning about myself, I also grew to know twenty-two strangers I had never met before. My MOI classmates came to be the first group of students I truly got to know and form relationships with at Loras. These relationships would not be as strong as they are without the situations and struggles I faced with my group at the ropes course. My Launch into Loras ropes course experience taught me new ways to use clear, effective communication, while stressing the importance of trust when building relationships.
Being completely honest I never wanted to take this class. When I made my schedule all I kept thinking was: “Why do I have to take this class? Why is it required? Why couldn’t it have been a different English class?”. I dreaded it the whole summer. When the class started, I bitched the whole semester about how I wanted it to be over the second or third week into school. It was nothing against Dr. Osborne, I just hate writing. I don’t find writing in anyway fun or relaxing; I struggle a lot with it. Even though I have learned a lot and shown growth through the course of this semester I still would write for fun. I was just doing enough to get through the semester without failing.

During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas. When we would get back our graded rubrics on the assignments we completed, the instructor would leave comments to
