What is the first thing you do when you wake up every morning? For me, and for most of my generation, check my phone, but that’s besides the point. Usually, yawn, stretch out, maybe whine about having to get out of bed so early then finally after some fight, jump out of bed. Then maybe head to the bathroom or get dressed for the day. Simple tasks that are done without even a thought and only take about what, maybe 10 min? Arriving at Michigan State I was already aware of what major and clubs I wanted to join, but not until now did I fully realize the impact it 's had on me. I think the real learning experience came in when I first hand was faced with helping people with disabilities do simple tasks, such as helping them get out of a chair or help them go to the bathroom. I knew that those tasks must be hard on them, but having helped them in it put me in their shoes to understand the struggles these athletes face. Before this semester, I did not even think about putting on my clothes with ease or just walking into a bathroom stall with no problem getting in, getting on the seat, and/or getting off of it. Now that I have been doing this club for a few months now, I sometimes stop and think about the people I have met and what they have to do to do the same thing I do without even trying. Now today I know it is really like for them. She came in on her wheelchair, but however soon transferred to a standing position with her walker, with the help of myself and one other person. Angel, the woman, said that she had to go to the bathroom, so obviously I was there to help. As soon as we walked into the bathroom doors, she said that she might not be able to squeeze her walker through. This was the first thing that hit me. I always just go to the bathroom without a second thought, not thinking that it might not fit for someone who needs a walker. In a public bathroom, nobody should be worrying about not being able to make it inside. However, after some maneuvering we made it into the bathroom, but the next and ever bigger challenge came. The work Angel had to put in just to turn around and find something in the stall to hold onto so she wouldn’t fall really opened my eyes. A feeling of gratitude and humbleness hit me out of nowhere because never before did I think about having to work and maneuver myself just to use the bathroom. However, I knew that she would not want me to feel pity or sorry for her because she has never known any other way of living, but I definitely looked at her and the other athletes in a different way. Basically, Amy Tan’s mother and Nancy Mairs are very amazing. They both have a thing in common where they have struggles, whether it’s their language or a disability and they both overcome those challenges; there are a couple of differences between Tan’s mother, who just can’t speak the English language, and Nancy Mairs, because she is literally physically disabled. Clubs were a great way for me to expand my interests outside of athletics. I was involved in Key Club and FCA freshman year and I enjoyed meeting new people and making a difference in our community. I was inducted a member of NHS junior year and this was a great way to make service a priority.
When the cross country season started in August I became a mentor for the new runners. I was still a runner but now I was doing my running through my peers. During each practice I would lead everyone in stretching and would follow with encouragement on my bike during runs. The most meaningful and challenging experiences in my life have been through sports and the 4-H club. They have instilled the values of perseverance, confidence, and teamwork within me. I feel that my peers and others could learn valuable life lessons through participating in these organizations. They are not just clubs, but a guiding light for life. For example in sports I have had the opportunity to play on both losing and winning teams. This has given me a different perspective of looking at things. I now realize that even if you fail or lose that is no reason to give up, you still have to get right back up. Just realize your mistakes and errors. Then come back the next time, mentally and physically, ready to meet the challenge. To often in life youth and adults alike fail at something and automatically think that they cannot do it, and give up. Instead of just pushing themselves to run another lap, lift another set, study for another hour, or learn another theorem. Imagine a world if the early American settlers had given in to the British, if the North had given in to the South after the first loss of the civil war, or if Michael Jordan had given up after being cut from the team in high school. People just need to learn to have perseverance and believe in themselves. 4-H has been a series of stepping-stones for me. When I first started out at age four I was shy and afraid to do things that I had not done before, but now I have blossomed into a confident and outgoing young man. I no longer fear getting up in front of large groups and speaking because of the experiences I've had in public speaking events. In addition, 4-H has given me the chance to develop myself as a leader. Over the years I have held various leadership positions on the club, county, and district levels. Also, 4-H has given me the chance to go into the community and help people by leading youth in workshops, assisting the handicap and elderly, and also learn from what others have to teach. In both of these organizations I learned the need for teamwork. For example last year my football team went 0-11 and the main reason because of that was we were not a team.
My People with Disabilities Single Story Narrative In 6th grade, I remembered seeing the ambulance outside the windows of my elementary school. I was in the classroom when there was a rush of EMTs entering the building. Students all started to run towards the door, including me, but were told to get back to our seats. Throughout the day, I was wondering who might have gotten hurt while praying it wasn't my sister or brother.
It's 8 o'clock in the morning and the corridors of Mill Road Elementary are busier than Grand Central Station. The only difference is that Mill Road students are about a foot shorter and ten times more energetic than your average Grand Central Station commuter. In comparison with the dorm room I have just left, these walls are papered with hundreds of drawings and paintings. The hallways could compete with any modern gallery in terms of sheer bulk and some critics might argue for their content as well. However, I did not wake up at 7 o'clock to view the Mill Road Elementary prized art collection. Instead, I am there to present the 3-step Disabilities Awareness program to several classes of supercharged fifth graders.
The first Disability Act went into effect in 1973 and it helped to end discrimination of those that have a disability. The Act was modeled based on laws that previously helped to end discrimination based on race, ethnic origin and sex. . The Disability rights act helped to give those with disabilities a chance to live independently and not have to depend on others to take care of them like in the past. Those with disabilities could no longer be turned down for employment, housing, public accommodations, education, transportation, communication, recreation, institutionalization, health services, voting, and access to public services.
I have been a part of multiple pep rallies and being a role model to younger students. One moment, in particular, stands out to me on how much difference I can make in younger children. My new cheer coach had asked if anyone would be interested in volunteering their time to help the middle school squad learning the cheers. Being Varsity Cheer Co-Captain, I was more than happy to oblige. It was a no-brainer to help out because cheer is one of my favorite things. As I laced up my cheer shoes, I glanced up and I noticed the fresh-faced cheerleaders who timidly walked into the gym. They reminded me of me at that age, afraid that they didn't have what it took to be a cheerleader. However, as practices went on, they became more confident in their abilities. Volunteering my time was well worth it, I got to see the cheerleaders grow into more confident cheerleaders and
Over the four years that I have spent at Good Counsel, I became part of many activities. Each helping me evolve as a person and become stronger yet. Simple lists could be made of every activity that I have ever been involved in but it could never express to a person what I have learned and how it helped me to grow. Every environmental club, science club, political science club, service work, and S.A.D.D. club I was part of had a very special message to deliver to me. Whether the message was one of responsibility, or a life lesson, I grew from it. The Political Science club opened me to many new experiences. It allowed me the chance to attend the Model U.N., where I was asked to address today's top world issues. This club was very beneficial to me because I was exposed to topics and ideas that I had not previously been able to discuss or learn about in a classroom situation. The science club allowed for me to experience extra educational situations as well. I took part in a hovercraft competition, which was very educational while also allowing me the chance to work with others for a common goal.
I thought this was a great experience and opened my eyes to all the challenges individuals in wheelchairs have to face. Throughout the day, I noticed I had to go out of my way to find a path that was accessible for a wheelchair. Not only was it inconvenient, but at times it was physically challenging and required a lot of energy. The next day my arms were very sore. It was also difficult to navigate around the classroom, and I sometimes had to ask for assistance to move obstacles out of the way. A lot of the doors on campus were very heavy and made getting through the doorways a lot harder. Most of the time, I needed someone to hold open the door so I could get through to the other room. There is numerous definitions worldwide and in Canada for the term “disability”, and debates about who is considered a person with a disability. Winkler gives an elaborate definition of this term which will be used to define disability throughout this paper. Above and beyond the general definition, Winkler states “Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others” (2009, p. 329). The first thought that crosses the mind of an able-bodied individual upon seeing a disabled person will undoubtedly pertain to their disability. This is for the most part because that is the first thing that a person would notice, as it could be perceived from a distance. However, due to the way that disability is portrayed in the media, and in our minds, your analysis of a disabled person rarely proceeds beyond that initial observation. This is the underlying problem behind why disabled people feel so under appreciated and discriminated against. Society compartmentalizes, and in doing so places the disabled in an entirely different category than fully able human beings. This is the underlying theme in the essays “Disability” by Nancy Mairs, “Why the Able-Bodied Just Don’t Get it” by Andre Dubus, and “Should I Have Been Killed at Birth?” by Harriet Johnson.
In middle school I was diagnosed with a disability with the way I expressed myself through writing. Ever since, I have gained multiple values and learned several lessons about self confidence. I was taught to push past my limits, in order to be successful in reaching my goals along with my dreams. Today I am a senior in high school who was once thought to struggle, but was able to succeed beyond expectations.
