Recommended: Public speaking and its importance
At the start of the year, I have set a goal for myself to be a better public speaker. Specifically, I aimed to improve my eye contact, my speech fluency and have a louder voice while presenting. This was a challenge for me because although I have given speeches before, I have never given a formal speech that I would prepare for in English. From the start of the semester, I realized that even the best public speakers need hours of practice to give a several minute speech. I knew that if I wanted to give a good speech I must practice at least an hour for every minute of my speech. Being an international student and having the language barrier meant that I should allocate more time to practice because pronunciation and articulation can be difficult. …show more content…
I set myself a goal to always practice and prepare thoroughly before ever giving a presentation. I set myself a goal to always be engaged in the audience by means like speaking extemporaneously, appropriate vocalization and having eye contact. I set myself a goal to ask for help when I need especially if it was in a challenging task such as public speaking in English. In this class, I learned how to effectively communicate and deliver content to an audience. I learned about some flaws I had when public speaking like not being loud enough, and was able to drastically improve. I learned it is best not to memorize a script word for word or present without well preparing but to speak extemporaneously. Public Speaking is one of classes that I really believe that has a practical use in real life. As a college student, I’m required to give speeches and presentations in several classes. Beyond college, public speaking class will help me in giving interviews, toasts and presentations required by my job. I drastically improved my communication skills and I couldn’t have done it without the help of Proffesor
The speech delivered by Dr. Randy Pausch is a powerful and influential public speaking, including various communication components that we should pay attention to and learn when we present our speeches. This lecture is divided into three parts: My childhood dreams, enabling the dreams of others and lessons learned. Dr. Randy Pausch told his audience what he believed and valued with his proper body languages, effective and efficient delivery and interesting and attractive visual aids. From this speech, it can be told that the speaker’s strengths and effectiveness from the lecture, which can reflect my problems as a communicator and a public speaker
One of my greatest strengths pertaining to education is my ability to complete my work in a timely matter. I only turned in late work at least two times in my high school career. Another strength I possess is being a respectful, erudite student. I can understand the lessons quickly and listen to my teacher in a considerate manner. Although one can discuss their strengths indefinitely, weaknesses must be told to understand a person. One of my main shortcomings is public speaking. I find it hard to present myself in front of a large group of people. Once I begin to know my peers, it is easier for me to speak in front of them during
In life, we rarely have the chance for a do-over, but I feel like returning to college is mine. Throughout high school, my grades were never above average and until about a couple of years ago I considered myself to be unintelligent. What I failed to see was my level of commitment. Once I began applying myself, the grades earned reflected that. This concept coincides to my public speaking ability. Many students, including myself, walk into a speech class thinking that it will be the Easy A of the semester and quite frankly I devoted a good amount of time and hard work to earn my A’s and B’s for this course. Overall, my public speaking growth in terms of listenability were influenced by the following: the strategy keys in correctly engaging the audience; the structure keys appropriate for a speech versus a paper; the support keys by continually engaging the audience; and finally the style keys by practicing the use of body language and reducing the verbal junk.
Knowing what I can do well is just important as knowing what needs improvement. My strongest attributes are being able to perform under pressure and multitasking. This is necessary to sell products and perform services that benefit the customer. The value of getting the job done correctly and on time correlates to returning customers and repeat business. My competitive advantage over others in the same industry is the high level of service we offer. I don’t just push a product on a client. I listen to what they want and need, make suggestions for the best available solutions; and I also help them with cost savings and environmentally friendly alternatives. One weakness I have and need to work on is public speaking. As I grow in my career and move into managerial leader positions, I will have a lot more opportunities to give speeches. I plan to work on my public speaking skills by practicing and making incremental changes to constantly improve. It’s not a matter of being shy in front of a group. It’s more of a point to be well prepared for the occasion and motivated to do a good job. To stay prepared for opportunities and change, I plan on continuing my education in the business field, and learning as much as possible about my job. I will also need to stay up-to-date with current issues in my external and internal
Before this course. I had learned some public speaking skills in the previous classes, such us how to manage my eye contact, facial expression, gestures
In today’s world students and adults who can use the power of public speaking are a rare find. Lucas states in chapter one that “the American Management Association asked 2,000 managers and executives to rank the skills most essential in today’s workplace. The top idea, was communication skills” (Lucas, 2012 pg. 5). This statement showes us that college students who have taking public speaking truly have an advantage over those who have
Recently, regardless of how good technologies are nowadays, how modern the universe can be using the creativeness and intelligence of human’s mind, we must always not forget to communicate with one another every day. Communication is define as the act of transferring information from one place to another. It may be in a form of vocally, written, visually or non-verbally (skillsyouneed.com, 2017). As for me, the ability to communicate effectively is the most importance of all life skills. This is what I have been struggling in my daily routine life as an international student here in Dublin, Ireland. Back in Malaysia, my first language is Malay, but when I came here for the first time, I found it quite difficult as English is not
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
I like communicating with other people, and much of my life consists of me with my friends. Communicating with people is a good way to become social and comfortable around people. Public speaking is my least favorite part of communicating but I feel if I go into business, it will be one of the most important things to learn. If I have to give a big speech, it could be the first time several upper management bosses really hear what I have to say, and if I give a poor speech and look frightened, it could make them think I am incompetent and cannot communicate.
I feel like I made really good eye contact in most of my speeches because I was always taught to look someone in the eye when I spoke to them. I also have really good memory so I could easily remember things about a topic or about a memory to share with the class and be able to tell the story or information correctly. My eye contact was a really big strength for me and I think it helped me in a lot of the speeches I did. The speech I think I made the most eye contact and was able to keep my thoughts together, was my impromptu speech when I talked about me and Arley’s relationship. I was able to give so much eye contact because I was not nervous and was able to speak about something I knew a lot about and the topic fit me fairly well. My other strength was memorization and that came in handy during my informative speech. I felt like my informative speech was one of the best speeches I gave due to the knowledge I had of the topic. I was able to remember important information and that made me more calm knowing I would be able to sail through the speech without going
In order to successfully deliver an oral presentation such as a speech, the speaker must follow certain procedures to ensure his message can be conveyed clearly. Vast amounts of research are essential in order to acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to speak about a topic comfortably and answer any questions the audience might have during the course of the presentation. After acquiring such knowledge about the topic of the presentation the speaker will feel more confident, confidence is key in delivering speeches and other oral presentations because it makes the speaker look more credible and trustworthy. Lastly, the speaker must be fluid and eloquent with his words, the speaker must be able to sound clear and crisp while delivering their
I did have great communication skills but whenever I had to communicate in front of a group of people for some reasons I fail miserably. My public speaking fears had become worst when I got to college. I was required to take a public speaking class which I couldn’t escape in since it was one of the required courses for my degree. My first day on that class is so far the most terrible day of my life. I was asked to introduce myself to the class using only one word to describe me, the moment that my name was called it felt like I was walking into an unfamiliar galaxy. I am standing in front of a classroom full of strangers doing nothing but looking around and
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
One of the most important skills that I have gained is how to communicate with people by adapting my speech to the circumstances I am in. Personally, this has made me more confident whilst speaking to strangers and even with people I know. During the course of this module, I have learnt a lot about myself, in terms of how I communicated with the people around me. Before taking this module, I didn’t realise that I changed my speech depending on the situation that I was in. When I would meet someone new or if I would speak to someone important, I would talk in a more professional manner. This module also taught me that I, like
At first I thought I would never make it to be a motivational speaker. However, this class has really altered the perception and understanding about me as a public speaker. It has enabled me discover the potential I had in this field. At the commencement of my classes in public speaking, I thought I would be a boring public speaker, less convincing, less persuasive and would freak out if asked to offer an impromptu speech. But it has come to my light that in fact this is the field where I would want to pursue my career in, it is the field that my dream lies in. I realized that I could make excellent speeches, entertain my audience and always keep them eager to expect my next words.
