My experience with writing has varied over the years. My lack of interest in school plays a large role in how my writing has developed. From a young age, I have attempted writing in a journal many times, and have quit every time. Even my enjoyment in reading hasn’t sparked an interest in writing. As a result of being in school, I have learned that I just needed to get over it. Writing is interesting because it’s something that can be developed. Each year information is poured into our heads in order to produce a more successful outcome. I find that as I have gotten older I have developed an interest trying to make my writing better. Last year, I had the bittersweet experience of taking A.P. English with Killer. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that in class essays absolutely sucked. Even though they did suck, the essays taught me a lot about writing processes and many tips and tricks to push our writing limits. Throughout …show more content…
my many years in schooling, if I wrote one timed essay I would be surprised. I learned that being able to write well in a timely matter is the key to successful writing. While this class taught me the basic tools needed to write, it didn’t focus as much on grammar. I didn’t need to take college writing the second semester. I already had my four years of English. I had no desire to, the senioritis has really kicked in. I decided to to take it because I realize its importance. My whole life my dad has drilled in my head the importance of a solid English foundation. One of the main bases of that English foundation is writing. Not only is it important for things like resumes or future college assignments, I believe that it better develops vocabulary. This year, I literally managed to get a C- on a comma quiz.
I have been learning about commas since second grade. I realized that in college writing 1 the focus on grammar would be prominent. As we refreshed and learned each lesson I would catch myself fixing mistakes I would have previously missed. These simple grammatical fixes have allowed my writing to flow better. I still need to work on my editing and memorizing some of these rules. This semester, college writing appears to be a whole new ball game. We are focusing less on grammar and more on different types of writing. I have heard from others above me that the long essays are helpful in college. I mean if someone asked me to write a four page paper, I wouldn’t even think twice about it. I’m still terrified of that upcoming eight page research paper. I realize that this class isn’t a bunch of busy work, so I am aware that each paper or quiz is attempting to further improve our writing. It’s not that I am so excited to go to this class everyday, it’s that I respect the
content. I can describe my writing similar to flowers. At the beginning, you look at the dirt and are like why am I even doing this. At a young age the little seeds were planted. Each year water was poured on and the flowers were starting to grow. What started out as seeds were soon budding flowers. The flowers were nowhere near their full blooming stage but the colors are starting to show. Similar to how I have grown as a writer my style has developed. Until I have reached Ms. Gaul’s level of writing the flowers won’t be fully bloomed, but each year they get closer. This essay has probably given you mixed messages on my enjoyment of writing. It’s a bit of a love hate relationship. While I lack interest in school, I enjoy learning information that will benefit me. I’m required to go to school and as a result I take classes like college writing with the knowledge it will help me down the road. My love for writing has increased over the years. I hope at some point in my life I can actually keep a journal.
Thinking about a topic to write about is not always easy, and sometimes the process of writing can end up being difficult. Jennifer Jacobson discusses strategies to overcome the struggles that young writers can encounter while writing. I was interested in her book No More “I’m Done!” Fostering Independent Writers in the Primary Grades because I feel like as a future teacher this could be a frequent problem among students. From reading this book, I hoped that I would learn useful strategies that I could use to help students overcome their problems with writing. After reading this book, I do believe that Jacobson has provided me with plenty of methods to use. I was surprised at the depth that she goes into in her text. There is a vast amount
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
In this English course for the past semester, I have learned many new forms of essays and many new techniques. There was much more conversation with my classmates this year and I believe that lead me to a better class experience and grade. The essays have also taught me many new skills that can help me in the future. The rhetorical analysis, Causal Argument, and Proposal essay have taught me many new writing techniques and the advantages of peer review.
Writing is a way in which a person can express their thoughts and ideas through the use of words. Everybody has their own writing styles. Some may consider theirs as inspirational while others think of it to be bad. Writing requires a lot of patience and time. In my case, writing has never been my favorite thing to do. I am no Shakespeare and I never will be, writing has always made me feel uncomfortable. In the past, I had always considered writing to be one of the most difficult tasks. I often wrote about topics that were not of my interest. I rarely did any writing out of school or for leisure as most people do. I only wrote because the teacher asked us to. Writing has always been forced onto me. Even though my writing isn't that great, I've felt that I've never been given the freedom to express my voice. Academic writing has always made me anxious. And, anxiety had resulted in my procrastination. Even though I consider writing to be one of the toughest tasks, I've felt that giving myself enough time to think allows me to do better. Silence helps me think beyond horizons. However, the fear of impressing someone, the anxiety and frustration is what makes me a developing writer.
Writing an essay was always the least favorite thing to me. Whether it’s a paragraph or five paragraphs, I hate it write. Whether it’s something fun or something easy, I just hate to write. I specifically chose to be an automotive technician so I don’t have to write much in my life. Writing in my previous experiences just never worked out for me, because my ideas and writing go way off topic. For example, I start writing about one thing and then jump to another thing. Everything I learned about writing from elementary school to high school was taught in many different ways. I haven’t done a lot of writing in the past. However, the writing I have done has just been for my school. I have never liked writing so I kept writing only to what I needed to write for school. But the kinds of writing I have done are reports, autobiographies, and writing about people from history. I never wanted to do my writing assignments like I was supposed to, which didn’t help me learn how to write. I also have the writing I did last semester, which wasn’t much. But the writing I did do last semester helped my writing so much. Last semester I learned how to put a paper together and what goes into a paper; I didn’t know a lot about writing before last semester. Also, I learned how to do MLA, which I had no idea how to do before. Writing is difficult and I don’t see myself using writing often.
While being enrolled in my English 112 DL07 composition class, I have faced some challenging situations. For instance, writing a rhetorical analysis is not as straightforward as one would imagine. There are several strategic techniques that need to be implied; there is also planning, note-taking, forethought, and prewriting. On the other hand, I overcame this tough situation by taking the appropriate amount of time to get my thoughts and ideas together to create a rough draft. I believe I do fully understand what is academically expected of me for this term. This may sound like sarcasm, but it is the truth, I enjoy writing, and analyzing essays. Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Going back to school at 30 is not the same as going back to school at 20, especially when you’re a single parent with an established career. Returning to school never left my mind throughout the years, I received my associates seven years ago and between then and now a lot had changed. So many questions I asked myself; do I have the time, who can help watch my daughter, can I juggle another load, etc. I answered every one of my questions; unfortunately I gave myself excuses instead. The decision going back to school was overwhelming because it was taking up another full time job; making it a priority and possibly putting in overtime to study and do homework.
In our focus groups, teens said they are motivated to write when they can select topics that are relevant to their lives and interests, and report greater enjoyment of school writing when they have the opportunity to write creatively. Having teachers or other adults who challenge them, present them with interesting curricula and give them detailed feedback also serves as a motivator for teens. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” –Nelson Mandela. Some people say that change is a bad thing, and some say that change is a blessing. Change is what makes us human. It is what enables us to grow wiser and stronger, and it is also what allows us to love, hate, and grow. I have grown so much since I have started the eighth grade in ways that I love, and ways that I have not yet recognized. I have learned and changed greatly throughout mathematics, science, and history, but I have learned the most about writing properly. Throughout the year, I have changed and recognized my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, my strategies and my progression, and what has caused change and the change to come.
I had always been a strong writer in high school; I know how to form an argument and support it fully, but this did not prepare me for the writing at a college level. I expected to be reading long and boring books about topics that did not pertain to my life; as it turns out, this assumption was completely false. All of the three essays that we were required to read in class were fairly difficult to understand, but after a second reading, the essay's meaning became clearer. I also feel as though their messages and key ideas are captivating. I definitely thought they would be extremely dry and difficult to understand.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.

As I look back on my schooling I can’t believe how many papers I’ve written throughout my life. Naturally as I’ve grown up, my writing has developed from learning how to write sentences all the way up to the pages of essays that consist of deeper criteria. I know for a fact that I’m a better writer now than I was before. College writing is more challenging and I’ve had to learn how to adjust to it.
