Growing as a Writer Since English is my second language, my writing is growing slow. I took many ISL classes in Jefferson Community and Technical College to improve my English and writing. I took English 101, and 102. I leaned how to write MLA format essays. I learned how to in English (W 290) class. In this course I learned how to write APA format essays. During this class, I took this year I have not only grown as a student and a writer, but as a person as well. I feel that my experience of all these English courses I took, I grown my knowledge and became more confident. I realized that my writing skills in English courses extremely beneficial to me. time to get the rite vocabulary to match my sentences. Now, my writhing changed over the course of this semester and became much better after writing many essays. We had many assignments in this semester. These assignments included research papers, shape of the essay, rhetorical and analysis, rhetorical, annotated bibliographies, and peer review, literature review, research papers, persuasive essays, learned how to do outline papers for persuasive essay, and write it in APA format essay. The essay parts are introduction, body, and conclusion. The body parts are background, description, rhetorical situation, discussion of genre, and rhetorical stance. I learned to be a critical thinker to come up with my own unique observations of the visual.
I translated the writing essay to the visual essay. I used visual rhetoric when I watched a Big Cats video multiple times and I wrote an essay about it. In Big Cats essay, I summarized the video and discussed how the creator defined the rhetorical situation, I Supported my argument and the purpose of it. I explained why this genre is appropriate to the message and how affect it. I learned how I could apply ethos, pathos, and logos to my essay assignment. Also, in on line class we write about persuasive essay. In this class, I learned about rhetorical appeals and this first time heard about it. Now I know rhetorical appeals are parts of writing such as rhetorical appeals of pathos, ethos, and logos. The most difficult part when writing is collaboration the different parts of the writing and making them work. The meaning of ethos is credibility of the persuader. The speaker can make the message believe and be clear about the topic. Pathos is the way of persuasive the audience when use argument essay by creating an emotional response. In the essay the writer will understand the audience and knows what their beliefs are and what their needs or wants. Logos is facts and the way of persuading the audience by reason. We can use just the facts and we can use the quotes

My writing improved a lot than before, special the beginning of this semester. I hope that by knowing my weaknesses I will be able to improve my writing to succeed in future assignments. As general studies major, I understand that writing is going to become a large part of my career special when I get my master degree. With many of the goals in my life the things that I have learned should help me out a great deal.
Pathos is the author's use of emotions and sympathy to urge the audience to agree with his or her standpoint. And lastly, logos apply sound reasoning (logic) to attract the typical ideas of the audience and to prove the author's point of view. "Lockdown" by Evans D. Hopkins is a fine example of an author using these appeals to persuade his audience. Hopkins uses of the three appeals are easy to locate and relate to throughout the entire passage. He undoubtedly uses rhetoric to try and keep his audiences focused and to persuade them to feel the way he does about the treatment of prisoners.
Effectively communicating an idea or opinion requires several language techniques. In his study of rhetoric, Aristotle found that persuasion was established through three fundamental tools. One is logos, which is used to support an argument through hard data and statistics. Another is ethos, which is the credibility of an author or speaker that allows an audience to conclude from background information and language selection a sense of knowledge and expertise of the person presenting the argument. The impact of pathos, however, is the most effective tool in persuasion due to the link between emotions and decisions. Although each of these tools can be effective individually, a combination of rhetorical devices when used appropriately has the ability to sway an audience toward the writer’s point of view.
For the first rhetoric article, I chose the McPick 2 McDonalds commercial. This commercial displays pathos with a catchy jingle playing throughout the ad, and how they repeat, “Let me get a McPick 2.” It displays ethos because McDonalds is a well known fast food chain that many people like, so people are normally going to believe what they say. It shows logos by explaining how the deal works, and how the food is delicious, or juicy, which makes you want to go eat some of the food. I think this commercial is very effective because they put a catchy jingle in your mind about juicy food. This makes you want to go eat at McDonalds.
These appeals are based on the demographics of the readers, so the process of persuasion is more powerful. Ethos is based on the credentials of the writer. For example, if the writer proves that he or she is smart they are practicing ethos. Pathos on the other hand has more to do with emotions of the text and how they affect the reader. Writers practicing pathos know the demographics of their readers, making readers feel sad, angry, pity, and happy are mostly used forms of pathos.

This first exposure to rhetoric was, I must admit, dull and dreary, much like Latin seemed to be where I used to teach. Dead languages, dead concepts—were the Ancient cultures good for anything other than art, stories, language, and great food? I decided that this seemingly dry material would have to be souped up a bit to attract college freshmen whose attention spans run between 10 and 15 minutes. Then, as Red Skelton might say, I had an apostrophe. I realized that the compositions my students write are comprised of sections, each an entity unto itself which contributes something to the overall essay. I remembered my senior year at UGA, taking “History and Analysis of Rock and Roll Music,” and the lessons we learned about the different sections of a song and how those sections are merged to create one complete unit. After reading a bit more about rhetorical appeals—ethical, logical, and emotional—I realized that the songs we listen to every day can be linked to this previously unknown, dry material.

Lack of credible sources, tone and thoughtfulness create a negative perspective shown on the author by the reader, therefore, constructing a poor foundation. For my assignment four visual rhetorical analysis I choose the documentary An Inconvenient Truth. My thesis is this paper will analyze the directors use of ethos, logos, pathos to reach his intended audience. Rhetorical appeals that I plan to use in my paper include ethos, logos, and pathos. I believe I have enough information for all three and that it will help me support my thesis. For ethos, I can write about how he was the vice president of the United States for 7 years and that he is a very well known politician. In this rhetorical analysis I will be using the three-part heuristic analyzing technique which is logos, ethos and pathos. Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. And pathos is an appeal to emotion, which is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response.
The key is to understand what ethos, pathos, and logos are. Then I learned to find the sentences in the article and sort them into three parts. Analyzing the rhetorical techniques can improve my writing skills and my essays can be more credible when I need to persuade readers. Compared with the rhetorical analysis essay, the argumentative essay is harder and more complex. I should state my opinion and find enough reasons to support it. The most important thing in writing an argumentative essay is rebut the opposite opinions strongly. In this case, the rhetorical techniques I learned before helped me a lot to make my essay reasonable. The summary-response essay is different from those two kinds of essays. I could not mention any of my opinions, but had to summarize all the important information in the article. Then, I had to mention something impressive the article and express my feeling and views in the response. Using good transitions were required when I wrote the last sentence in the summary or the first sentence in the response.
A successful essay needs to have three categories: logical, emotional and credibility which also known as logos, pathos and ethos. These three categories support each other in order for the essay to alive. Furthermore, logos seem to be a strong point for me because it is persuading and reasoning part of the essay. Logos is known as a skeleton bone that connect all the essay together. It is the main ideas and information about what the reader tries to understand.
The second major assignment we were given taught us how to summarize the works of other authors. Mr. Mayo taught us that a summery identifies a work’s main ideas and outlines key points. Additionally, we were taught about emphatic sequence. Emphatic sequence is organizing ideas on a paper in order of importance. Furthermore while preparing for this assignment, the class was taught about ethos, logos, and pathos, and that while writing an argumentative/persuasive essay, one must use ethos, logos, and pathos if he wants to receive respect from the reader.
