My fascination with English did not start until Grade 9. It was always tenses, grammar, vocabularies, and occasionally some Shakespeare on repeat back when I was in middle school. I just treated English as a subject that I must study in order to proceed to high school. However, my attitude towards this language has completely changed since the day my English teacher showed the class a clip of TED Talk given by Stephen Burt on the topic “Why People Need Poetry”. He analyses the beauty and the mystery of intonation, word stress, poetic techniques and so on by sharing with the audience some of his favourite poems. I was immediately hooked with the effectiveness of his talk, and as well as how English language and literature can actually be of …show more content…
I want to know a lot deeper about English, about how this language has changed over time, why poems and dramas are written the way they are, how to apply the language skills in our conversations and more. I then started to read a wide range of books and sources that may help me satisfy my uncertainties, but I only got some fragments out of them. I need some guidance in assembling the bits and pieces together, that is why I am applying for this course. I trust that by studying the course, I will be able to seek solutions to my questions, broaden my academic horizons and to gain a more thorough understanding of English. Most importantly, I will be able to incorporate what I learnt in the course into my daily life, especially in persuasive language and analytical communication with …show more content…
I am especially partial to education systems which are of great flexibility, resourceful in encouraging students to acquire skills through active participation and self-directed learning, and supportive towards students in fostering their own interests. Education in the UK opens up a variety of opportunities and possibilities for students to explore and to develop, its degree of freedom for students to realize their personalities and potential through exploration and perquisition, and to encounter new ways to look at our world today is what attracts me the
English is vast you can create your own answers, which irritates my science and math like mind set, I want all the answers, I want a set way of doing stuff a step by step guide of getting to one correct answer. However, this course might be able to loosen my mind and notice that in English there can be more than one correct answer. I surely do believe that I can excel in Professor’s Grahams’ English 1101, but only if I work for it and earn an A. The class seems like a lot of work but because of the work load but the type of rigor it takes to complete the
English has always provided an influential and sanctuous undertone within my literate life, assuming a variety of forms that stem from beyond the requirements of academia. Countless time has been blissfully occupied writing and experimenting with my own pieces of work, from short novels to poetry and dramatic texts, and countless time has been happily spent immersing myself in eclectic pieces from the broad spectrum of literature.
Poetry may be the hardest form of literature to examine, at least for me. After reading some of our assigned poems this semester I was left completely confused, as to not only the authors purpose, but also the relevance and importance of the poem; None ...
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
reason to why I choose to study in the UK is because of the diversity of students attending
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
This semester entering English 102 I thought of myself as a bad writer with a lot to say and no idea how to coordinate it or express it. A big reason why I took English stretch composition was to strengthen my writing skills. I feel like I have a better idea of where to put my ideas but I really need help with the technical writing and how to do research papers correctly. My concerns over the semester are not the same as they were at the beginning, they have changed. One of my concerns was that I wouldn’t know how to organize a college essay, but that concern is gone now. A new concern I have this semester is my run on sentences and the punctuation and the lack thereof.
I am thankful for this opportunity to apply to study at Oxford University, f that it has always been a dream of mine to visit England, it would further my academic and cultural knowledge, and it would prepare me for college. My maternal family is originally from England, so I am interested in connecting to my roots. Although, most of my family left England in the 1600’s to escape religious persecution, I want to explore my English heritage. Furthermore, I am intrigued in this program because I wish to broaden my horizons by experiencing a new way of life, and meeting a plethora of different people, from different places. Therefore, I would be able to learn about new cultures, ways of life, and types government.
Before I came to English 101 I was more of a raw writer than most people. Although I would write my papers filled with great content, I would also have many problems with my grammer and organization. Throughout my time in this class I have developed and trained multiple areas of my writing. Some of the areas that I have improved the most have been grammer, organization, and MLA format. These areas have lead to an evolution in my writing that has given me a new level of understanding in English. Which has provided me with the skills that will endow me to achieve success in english 102.
Writing a decent essay can be nerve racking, time consuming, and can be accompanied by many trial and errors such as an art project. First you have to generate an idea, which can be the biggest challenge of them all. Then you have to decide on what details to incorporate and the placement for it. You begin to throw colors and shapes together in hopes that it will transform into a pleasing design. This all takes time, being challenged to create artwork, whether it be an essay or a painting, in sixty minutes becomes even more nerve racking and mind boggling. After last week’s timed writing practice, I was able to experience the dreadful event of producing a piece of artwork, which in my case was to deliver an essay,
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
The English language has been in constant transition throughout its history, but the most significant transformation in modern English can be credited to William Shakespeare. With Shakespeare’s invention of commonly used expressions, his creation of new words, and his use of iambic pentameter, he was able to affect the language in a way that no person since has. Shakespeare’s influence on modern English is not only visible in everyday speech, but also in the fact that his work has survived over four hundred years and it continues to be performed and read worldwide.
As an international student, the biggest challenge is language. I registered for this English course for two reasons. First, I have to pass ELPE test to meet the English language requirement in my department. Second, I want to improve my writing skill, which is my weakness in my academic study.
Even though poetry is still taught in classes, students will only view it as a required subject. A majority of students do not find poetry interesting just from investigating on their own. However, when they are learning it in a classroom setting with their peers, they may have more enthusiasm about the topic. Yet, after these students learn about the influence that poetry has brought to our society, they are still inclined to explore their own writing style. There is nothing wrong with this, but this proves that poetry has strayed away from its actual literature and the value it
Although poetry has been the focus of interest for ages, it has not got its deserved place in English language teaching.
