Writing to convey experience – reflecting on my student teaching at PS105
On the first day I walked into the building, I was thinking to myself, “was I really ready for this?” “I have never worked in a building so huge and I have never been in a school with over 1000 students.” However, I was very excited to be there because I was thinking that I was so close to the end. I would be ready for my own classroom, so I braced myself and was ready to practice my passion.
For the last 6 months, my teaching pedagogy has grown and strengthened. My belief that students learned in different ways and that I have to use different strategies to meet diverse students’ needs was practiced and enhanced. The diverse population of student at the school was interesting and I have learned to accommodate and modify my lesson to meet all students’ needs. I had the opportunity to teach classes from a variety of grades, such as, first grade general education class, 1st to 3rd grade self-contained class and 5th grade ICT class. Overtime we develop a bond, and I felt l gave birth to all 27 students in my class. Nevertheless, there were few students who disrupted the class, but I still think no less of them. I like nurturing and have learned that is an important skill to have as a teacher. Furthermore, students like those have helped me to develop strategies to manage my class. I am always a little nervous and hesitant when I begin writing an essay. Ever since I was little I was an honor roll student, passed all my tests, was placed in honors and AP classes, and eventually graduated a year early from high school. I used to be so confident when I would begin writing a paper, I could finish it within a couple minutes. During junior year of high school, I began taking duel credit classes. I was passing all the classes so far until I reached English 111. It was an 8-week course and I started to get overwhelmed. All throughout the course I was having a little bit of trouble on the essays. I would still receive a passing grade, but it wasn’t an A. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. A lot my time was spent weighing the pros and cons of punishment and rewards systems in the classroom, while taking into consideration the longer term and short term benefits and implications of utilizing them in an active classroom setting. My conclusion on this is that trial and error will be needed for this type of classroom management. I do not support the idea of punishing an entire class for the behavior of one student. Methodology like that can lead to more harmful consequences than positive consequences in the long run. It also important to keep in mind that children can have a negative response to hostile and negative classroom practices. However, sometime if as a teacher I remain calm and take me time and make an effort I can have an affirmative relationship with my students. For example the girl who dropped her art work. If I had shown displeasure or aggression to her, I could have contributed to a possible bad environment in that child’s life. However, I responded with kindness, patience, and a smile, and in return I coxed her out of shy shell and received a thank you and a smile from her

Writing for me has always been a love and hate relationship since I could remember. Depending on the subject matter that I was writing about I would enjoy it because it suited my style or I loathed it because that specific style was uninteresting and boring to me. Learning certain writing formats were absolutely the worst part about writing when I first started learning in high school. As time pushed on and I grew older I began to develop an appreciation for writing that I did not have before; which is what led me to taking Writing 101 as my first full-fledged college course. I began this course with minimal writing experience because of what I failed to retain before, but now I am a stronger writer than I could have imagined with new skill sets that enhance my professional portfolio.
Every student is going to be different, and I will without a doubt have more than a few extroverts in my classes. Which is something that I will have to consider when making lesson plans. Besides that the most influential part of this course was the Faubion observations. Although I do not want to teach elementary school level classes I learned a lot through them. Espessially during my second observation where I learned about IEP’s, and how schools implement them. I realized that I will have to manage a classroom where not every student is going to want to learn, but it is going to be my job to make them want to. I also realized that when a student starts lashing out it is not necessarily because they do not like you, but rather that they are either going through something, or their ability to handle stress, frustration, and emotions could be
As the time approached, my attitude toward student-teaching was one of confidence and in some ways overconfidence. I believed that I was equipped with all of the tools necessary to be a superior teacher. Little did I know what truly goes on behind the scenes of a teacher. Between grading papers, attending meetings, and preparing lessons, I would often feel overwhelmed. Still, student teaching would prove to be much more valuable than I anticipated. It would teach me to appreciate the wisdom of mentors and experienced teachers, value or being organized and prepared, and lastly the resilience of students.
My personal views on teaching have evolved and developed in a rapid manner over the years, having experienced the situation from both a student and a teachers' perspective. My teaching methodology has grown and expanded in a bid to reach every student whilst keeping in line with their personality and individuality.
The job of a teacher is never easy but we have seen how cooperative discipline and enabling students to feel capable, connected and contributing can improve classroom management and maybe even our own moods. If we create an environment of mutual respect and give our students legitimate power of voice and choice in the classroom we will see positive results in improved student behavior and student achievement. Because when our students believe that they can succeed, they will.
This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. When I am having fun teaching the student will have learning that material, this will help them to be relaxed and engaged in that lesson. I feel it is important to connect what they are learning to things that they have experienced in the real-world.
As I reflect on my experiences observing in three different classrooms over the last three months, I cannot express how much I have learned by being in the classroom. I began the Master of Science in Education last fall and previous to the practicum experience I had taken 8 classes. I read books, listened to the experiences of my classmates and instructors, reflected on my own education, and tried to imagine how this information was going to prepare me to face a classroom of elementary school students. While I learned theories and skills that should be known by any educator, these classes could not teach me what I most desired to know: what tangible steps could I take to correctly implement all of the correct ways of teaching.
In my placement classroom at Eagle Peak Montessori School I have learned so much about the teaching style and individual needs of each child. I am grateful that the teachers trusted me enough to lead certain lessons with the students because it gave me the power to see what it would be like being an actual teacher.
