Writing was something I never particularly looked forward to before taking this class. I had a difficult time putting my thoughts together and really getting my point across. During my time in this class, my level of writing has increased exponentially compared to where it was when I was in high school. This class was very well constructed, and made the learning process one of the easiest I have experienced. Furthermore, I found the discussions made me think critically about the subject and that class participation in these discussions was great. I will reflect in this essay on many of the things learned while taking my first college course, writing 101.

but Comfit helped to change that. Unfortunately, it did not change it right away. The first time I took the Accuplacer test inside of Comfit reiterated that, as I scored a failing grade. Being as though this was my first college course, I wanted to do well. I wasted no time getting to the workout center inside of Comfit just to try and better understand some of the easier mistakes I was making. Each assigned comfit lesson furthered my knowledge on things such as comma usage, passive and active voice, and sentence fragments. Another lesson I found that helped dust some of the cobwebs off of my writing was subject verb agreement. Furthermore, Comfit was great at breaking their workouts and lessons down so that it catered to the individual, making a otherwise complicated online course easy for some. In conclusion, Comfit was one of the reasons I found this course easy to understand and invaluable. Discussions were one of my favorite aspects of this course, but were also a great way to get warmed up when getting to write our essays. The subjects on some of the discussions made you think outside the box a little to be able to present an argument not already brought to the class. At the same time, it incorporated some of the grammar subjects we were studying. One of my favorite discussions was one about the rhetorical appeals. It was just another example that people use these everyday to get their point across, especially in politics. Appealing to your audience is very important when writing a paper you feel strongly about. This was something I struggled with early in my writings, as I focused on things that I knew I would be interested in and not necessarily what my target audience would be inclined to keep reading. One of the other discussions we had was on logical fallacies and argumentation kills. These were great to be able to bring different arguments to the same topic if needed. If it wasn’t for the discussion posts, I would still be writing for self and would be very one sided when composing future papers. The largest struggle I faced was my research paper.
I had a hard time getting excited about writing this as I knew it was going to be my most difficult assignment yet. When practicing the research resources we were going to use, I was foggy and uninspired because I had trouble finding things to get energized about. During the second time doing research, I knew I had to start getting my motivation from somewhere to be ready for the third essay that was due. I found that if you dig deep enough, you can always find something inspiring to write a research paper about. One thing I had searched on was technology in the classroom. This is a very broad search term that, for me, wasn’t something that was all that interesting to write about. Because of this, I searched multiple pages on this broad topic to see what I could sub-topic from it. I then came upon an article about a virtual reality classroom which peaked my interest because I actually have a couple friends in the field of study. From this article it was much easier to get inspired about doing research. This search exercise we did gave me the confidence that when it was time to do my research paper, I wouldn’t have any problems and would be able to complete it. All in all, the research paper was tough but was a necessary paper to write in order to further my skills in
writing. This class may have been basic and required, but the skills I have attained from it are indispensable. Now whatever class I take for college, I’ll have the tools from this class to make them a little easier. I’ll also be able to write better reports for work, and in emails for everyday contact. As I’ve also said before, these skills will help me when I eventually open my own business. I have no doubt that I will have more of a chance to succeed because of what I’ve learned.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
I have studied English since I was a grade seven, but the curriculum in my middle school and high school years, mainly focuses on reading and speaking components of language skills, with a little focus on writing. As a result, I never felt confident with any piece that I was asked to write. Writing has been a hurdle for me to succeed in college since most of the courses in college requires one or the other way writing skill. Consequently, I have decided to work on my writing skills, and have started working on it; even before, I started taking this English 101 class. I used to use a various educational material which I thought might help me to meet my writing goal. Some of the materials which I was using includes: TOEFL educational materials, You Tube resources, and various novels. All of these resources have helped me to polish my writing skills. Furthermore, after I started taking this class, I have learned to enjoy writing. I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. This class builds up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.

As a first year student, college is an excellent opportunity to discover one’s own sense of identity and interact with a diverse range of people. Unfortunately, everyone will experience moments of confusion, loneliness, or even disengagement during their college years, which may cause a lack of interest for campus involvement. Through many studies, there are several theories that determine the parallelism between a student’s growth and their involvement interest, which also provides helpful methods for first year students to overcome challenges during this time. As Luckyday mentors this gives us insight to how to carefully approach different situations from mentees while forming a lasting impact on their transition from high school to college.
Being completely honest I never wanted to take this class. When I made my schedule all I kept thinking was: “Why do I have to take this class? Why is it required? Why couldn’t it have been a different English class?”. I dreaded it the whole summer. When the class started, I bitched the whole semester about how I wanted it to be over the second or third week into school. It was nothing against Dr. Osborne, I just hate writing. I don’t find writing in anyway fun or relaxing; I struggle a lot with it. Even though I have learned a lot and shown growth through the course of this semester I still would write for fun. I was just doing enough to get through the semester without failing.
