Last year, I lived like a cancer patient for seven long days. Well, sort of.
It was the beginning of spring. Like a flower prepares for blossoming, I felt as if God primed me for a season of growth. During this time, I felt as strong ever physically, mentally, and spiritually. However, the season I entered blindsided me, leaving me surrounded with all types of questions, confusion, and chaos.

Adhering to my doctor’s advice, I rested from all sorts of physical activity for a week. Because I enjoy working out, this didn’t sit well with me. So, I decided to pay more attention to my nutrition to keep my body healthy.
As the week progressed, I noticed an unexpected change in my bodyweight. Because my metabolism runs at the speed of light, I consumed roughly 4,000 calories a day. But, I was losing about a pound a day. By the end of the week, I had lost about eight pounds.
Even though this fluctuation scared me, I figured it had something to do with not being in the gym. So, I changed my mind about my doctor’s orders and started exercising again. His power and righteousness claim victory over our every flaw and imperfection. The Gospel God gave us doesn’t ask us to be perfect, but asks us to live as His children. It calls us to identify with the victory of Jesus Christ rather than the defeat of our sins. Though He recognizes our sinfulness, our Heavenly Father does not bind us to it. By the cross and the empty grave, He gives us a new identity found in Him.
By embracing our identity as God’s redeemed, we find our ample strength in Christ. Identifying with Jesus means to find your value in how seriously you value Christ. It means finding your significance in how earnestly you signify the greatness of our Savior. When you relinquish the power of your broken heart to God, you give your Creator the ability to serve in His rightful place over all His creation. And there’s no greater power we could trust our shattered and scattered pieces with than the One who gave us our hearts to begin with.
As for me, my strength comes from the Lord. Because of God’s grace, I recognize my position of need in light of my Savior’s position in victory. Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Human identity can be summed up by looking at it from two perspectives. Who we are in our natural state and who we are in Christ. Mankind in his natural state is driven by his sin nature. Romans 1-8 perfectly lays out who and what we are in our natural state. It also lays out who and what we are in Christ. “For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.” (Romans 3:9 NIV) In Romans 1:29-31, Paul gives a long list of wicked behaviors that are still prevalent in today’s society, which lets me know that we, in our natural state, are the same as we always have been. There are no exceptions to the rule, besides that of Christ. “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” (3:23) Paul emphasizes in Romans 1-3 how people have tried to free themselves from their sin nature by depending on the Law to no avail. The Law could not bring about justification (Acts 13:39), produce righteousness (Galatians 2:21), produce life (Galatians 3:21), bring about perfection (Hebrews 7:19) or free the conscience from a knowledge of sin (Hebrews 10:1-4). (Johnson, 1896) The fact is that God’s standards are perfect and we alone can never live up to them by any religious act or moral behavior. The good news is that God knew all of this. After a full week (7 days) I can conclude that my baseline data is as exactly as I sadly expected it to be. I started recording my baseline starting on Monday and ended my week on Sunday. Throughout that week I ate alarmingly unhealthy and made many unsound food decisions. There wasn’t much change from day to day in terms of eating healthier on any day. Throughout the work week (Monday-Thursday) I ate a rather low calorie nutritional breakfast of oatmeal which is what I always eat for breakfast at work. The weekend is where I normally eat out for breakfast. On Friday I ate Shipley’s Donuts and Home cooked Biscuits and Gravy on Saturday. Sunday I skipped breakfast and had lunch which consisted of a Taco Bell Quesorito and a soda. I know, I’m horrible! Lunch and Dinner throughout the entire week was an unhealthy mess that varied from Burgers, Pasta, Fast Food Meals, Taco’s, and Hamburger Helpers. * Insert Sad Face*

I will be discussing my carbohydrate, lipids and proteins as well as comparing them to the guidelines and discussing what I’ve learned about my own personal diet and physical activity and how I can change my diet with behavior modifying strategies which could reduce my risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

As He preached and healed, He taught about the love of the Father, and He ministered the message of “redemptive relationship.” Having, prioritizing, and honoring a relationship with God was the message behind everything that Jesus did. It was truly important to Jesus that we recognize and accept our place in the kingdom of God. He wanted us to know who we are in the eyes of God, the Father.
There are strengths I always knew I had,such as kindness, that I didn’t know how to use to it’s highest effect. Then there were strengths that I just didn’t know how to use at all, such as forgiveness and mercy. It is difficult to hone such abstract states of being in oneself and I know I’ll have work harder and devise new plans and ideas to strengthen these traits and others. I believe that the process of strengthening each was beneficial to my well being as I focused on inward strength as well as outward.
