Planet earth is a place where all creatures live and prosper in. Humans are an advanced civilization with many technologies that harm our planet. I chose AP Environmental as my favorite school subject because it has opened my eyes to how our planet is being mistreated, but it also shows us how to nourish it back to health. My teacher Ricardo Garcia was a big reason why I enjoyed the class. Mr. Garcia made the material very engaging. He would have the class participate many times in class and would make sure we went on various field trips to broaden our perspective on the class. One trait that my teacher had was that he was extremely passionate about keeping our planet healthy. This trait was passed on to me because I never knew the extent to
our pollution and destruction of wild life. Ever since taking this class I have felt responsible to teach people that want to learn on how to preserve our planet. Small moves can be taken to help our planet. From recycling plastics to not buying from brands that harm animals, we can change our ways. Our planet is changing for the negative at an alarming rate. We are emitting many greenhouse gasses, destroying freshwater systems and also degrading our land. All of these will cause the extinction of life on our planet sooner or later. This class did not just teach me about conserving our environment, it also taught me how close a classroom could get to feeling like a family. In my class, I came close to people who were complete strangers and now I could call them my family after that class. AP Environmental was my favorite class I have taken so far because it was an amazing experience that I will never forget.
At my school, I am an active member of a program called S.E.E.D., which stands for Students Ending Environmental Destruction. As a group, spread awareness about recycling, water conservation and remediation, climate change, and other environmental problems the world faces today. We make sure that every classroom has a recycling bin and informative posters above them. We have hosted movie nights where we provide healthy, GMO-free refreshments and show an educational film that relates to a current issues to spread awareness. We have also convinced our school to install stations that are specifically meant to refill water bottles as it encourages students to stop buying plastic bottles and wasting plastic. Taking care of the environment and educating our youth, the congressmen, women, and voters of tomorrow who will be the deciding factors of the earth’s health, and consequently the people’s health, is crucial to me.
I walked out of sophomore AP world history and human geography not only with greater historical awareness, but also the ability to utilize that awareness to engage with other disciplines. In pushing beyond mere identification and recall, APWH challenged me to shift away from passively accepting information at face-value, to understand how context and rhetoric framed knowledge. In constantly deconstructing the nature of historical and empirical evidence and the lenses in which objects of scrutiny are extracted-- especially those defined by conflict and transformations--, I learned to be conscientious of how authors’ material conditions and interests shaped the presentation of given narratives. AP Seminar was my first experience in an environment that was completely dedicated to learning, without the fixation on the letter grades that ‘determine’ success. My peers were my teachers. I discussed, debated, and collaborated with peers that shared various viewpoints on thought provoking issues that challenged my own. I learned to ask the ‘Whys?,’ ‘Hows?,’ and ‘What Ifs?’ and dive deeper into discussion. The environment fostered differences in interests, mindsets, and intellect. I am always a little nervous and hesitant when I begin writing an essay. Ever since I was little I was an honor roll student, passed all my tests, was placed in honors and AP classes, and eventually graduated a year early from high school. I used to be so confident when I would begin writing a paper, I could finish it within a couple minutes. During junior year of high school, I began taking duel credit classes. I was passing all the classes so far until I reached English 111. It was an 8-week course and I started to get overwhelmed. All throughout the course I was having a little bit of trouble on the essays. I would still receive a passing grade, but it wasn’t an A. I began becoming a little discouraged and didn’t understand what was going
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
The first four weeks of CR510 have prompted this student to reflect on her years of teaching in the public school setting. Having experienced many similar complexities to the ones in the text, this student is sympathetic to the challenges facing those in the education system and is eager to find opportunities to offer a better solution for all involved. CR510 has strengthened this student's belief that a third party neutral can provide valuable benefits to educational systems at all levels.
During this course I learned a lot about myself as a writer. I learned that I can write tremendously well if I put my mind to it. When we received writing assignments from the professor, I would not be interested in doing it so I would procrastinate most of the time. But when I actually took my time to perfect an essay, I did well. I really did not know that I had that sort of knowledge in me. Pushing myself to greatness got me to where I am academically at the moment.
The winter before I attended my second semester of college, I had the opportunity to take part in the Atlantis project in Athens, Greece where I spent 20+ hours each week shadowing doctors for 4 weeks. My time in Athens was nothing like at home in the summer—wake-up came at 7:30 a.m., and by 2 p.m., students were asked If they’d like to stay extra time and shadow; I always agreed of course! From the fellowship, I gained clinical experience, cultural immersion and a new passion for healthcare. During my time at Ippokrateio Hospital, I rotated through shadowing Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, General Surgery, Otolaryngology and Paediatric surgery. Nonetheless, I enjoyed every second of my time in Greece. I met passionate medical professionals

During my freshmen year of college, I was determined and motivated to manage my competitive boxing career and secondary education. Balancing both boxing and college coursework was challenging. My rigorous training involved running three to five miles a day, lifting weights to build up my strength, spending countless hours punching the heavy bags, and sparring. Since I was competing, I was training six days out of the week. I competed in amateur boxing events ranging from club shows to regional tournaments and my resolution to achieve the goal of being the best has led me to victory after victory. However, my success in boxing did not reflect success in my academic life.
We all belong to the same world and all of us have the same responsibilities towards the world and its environment. This fact might be hard to digest, but if we continue to pollute the Earth at the current rate, all of the world’s ocean waters will become one-hundred-thirty percent acidic. This means that the ocean will be unable to sustain most of its marine life and only a few creatures will be able to survive in the water. A big population of people think that they do not or have few responsibilities towards the environment. People think that the governor of a country should take steps to help the environment. They leave it to scientists since they have the technology to prevent pollution, or that is what most people think. There are more responsibilities to the world each individual has than most of realize. The amount of negligence and ignorance of humans towards the Earth is taking a heavy toll.
We as a whole need to realize the earth is in trouble. A lot is being done, but not enough. As countries become industrialized, it pushes the earth to the point of breakdown. Educational programs need to be implemented on ways to better the earth.
Environmental studies is a paramount field to focus on for both the present day and the future. This field of studies pertains to all people, animals, plants, and biomes around the world. Environmental Studying is important because it is only by understands the environmental processes that we can begin to take the steps necessary to correct the on-going damage that is occurring, and ultimately protect and sustain life on the planet. Unless steps are taken to try and abate and control environmental problems, which are often human-generated or exacerbated, then the environmental that we live in will continue to deteriorate. There is no life without protecting the source that sustains us. Even though I have only been alive for seventeen years, it has been long enough to see many negative environmental changes. Since I was born that population has grown by over one billion people causing deforestation, loss of wildlife, increased pollution to both air and water, and even superbugs. However, I have also been able to see extremely positive results such as an increase in the research and implementation of renewable resources. The reason I am so motivated to study environmental science is because I know that change is possible. Those who study environmental science and study have the ability to help reduce, and possible reserve, some of the damage that has been done to the environment while at the same time, helping to advance the well-being of our fellow humans.
