This memo is to discuss what I have learned from the technical writing course and its impact on my writing skill as a nursing professional.
Good writing skills for nurses improve health care delivery and promote empowerment. In the last 5 weeks, I have learnt to use a systematic process for writing and revising documents. I also got the opportunity to practice my technical writing by completing the hands on assignments included in the course work.
One of the key things I learnt in this course is the importance of the audience that the document will be addressed to. If the document does not meet the needs of the people reading it, then it is a useless piece of document. The audience and the purpose for the document must dictate the way the document is written. The concept of topic sentences and supporting statement as components of each paragraph was also one of the critical points of learning in the course. This approach helps to highlight key points in the document. It is also important to make sure all documents written have a purpose, using the right tone suitable for the audienc...
Introduction The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experience in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. In this paper, I will address two of my learning needs and my goals for each.
From the beginning, the first writing project assigned in class, a proposal, exposed to me the essential tools a writer needs to connect to the proper audience and defend my stance on the reform proposed. Overall, the course not only stressed the importance of drafts, but of peer review and instructor feedback as well; therefore, strengthening my knowledge
The tone in a document changes how we feel about it and generates a reaction in a certain way. I feel the author uses different tones to try to change people’s feelings and reaction to the problem they are facing. First, the author attitude is passionate and full of confidence; therefore, the reader is convinced and agrees with the arguments presented. He also wrote the document to command
Weekly journaling post clinical will assist students in applying the knowledge, skills and attitudes to improve the safety and quality of nursing care. Students will show improved critical thinking and judgment in making complex decisions in various situations, based on previously learned knowledge, ultimately improving patient outcomes (Coombs, 2001). The implementation of QSEN integrated journaling into the curriculum will enable educators to identify the knowledge learned, and skills needed for the enhancement of the students clinical experience (Aaron,
Even though the majority of hospitals and health care facilities are computerized, the charge nurse has to communicate with a multitude of health care professionals during every shift. Society’s strong reliance on technology emphasizes the importance of electronic writing and communication for all nurses. Throughout the shift, the charge nurse will have to send urgent text messages and emails to their supervisor or coworkers to ensure everything is running smoothly on the floor. Even though email and text might be thought of as informal communication, writing skills must be professional when speaking with superiors and coworkers to maintain an appropriate appearance (Knab,
Intro of primary documents if needed, make sure student know that the doc comes from the times being studied and represents real peoples thoughts and opinions on events as they happened without the benefit of hindsight.
As a nursing major it is very important for me to even be considered for a job. Technical Writing class is a way for me to learn how to communicate effectively with others.
For me, being a college writer means writing well-organized essays that readers enjoy reading. Being a well rounded writer was also important. Each unit in this class challenged me to write in a well-organized, concise way. During each unit, we conducted some sort of revision activity where I was exposed to other students’ writing. As I read their work, I picked up on their use of transition words and separation of paragraphs to make the essay flow. Naturally, I began implementing more transition words in my own work and learned the appropriate ways to split paragraphs. The structure of the class was key to the organization of my ideas which was crucial to the development of my essay. During the third unit of this class, we were asked to identify an issue on campus, conduct research on the issue, and finally propose a solution to correct the issue. At first, it was difficult to get my ideas down and figure out what it was I would research. What I learned in class allowed me to first identify the issue I would research, write a rough draft, and hear what others had written before the final paper was due. This helped me to identify the main points, brainstorm and figure out what additional research I would need to find to support my argument. Being able to organize my thoughts from the beginning made writing the paper a much easier process. This course has helped me to grow as a writer and make
Nursing is a rewarding career for people who love to saves lives, however it requires people who are patient and critical thinkers because every life counts. Most of the people consider it a calling, but to be a nurse, good communication skills, and especially fluency in English, are essential to ensure understanding both orally and in writing (Buerhaus et al). A good memory is essential since a nurse is required to memorize drugs, uses and side effects, and standard doses. Nursing also requires one to be a good test taker to pass the nursing licensing exam.
In order to engage in meaningful communication and develop effective communication skills, nurses must engage in the process of reflecting on how communication skills are utilised in practise. Reflection allows the nurse opportunity to gain a deeper insight into personal strengths and weaknesses and to address any areas of concern in order to improve future practise (Taylor 2001). A further aim will be to reflect on how communication skills have been utilised within nursing practise. Various models of reflection will be examined, and a reflective account of a personal experience which occurred during placement will be provided using a model. This reflective account will involve a description the incident, an analysis of thoughts and feelings and an evaluation of what has occurred. Fin...
writing” by R. Ramsey, the ability to write competently is a requirement for success in any field.
Reflective writing in nursing is a part of both theory and practice (10). At the beginning of their nursing education and career, nurses are taught to ask patients many open-ended questions and engage in meaningful dialogue that offers reflection (7). Nurses can continue to ask these open-ended, reflective questions and relate them to their critical decision making and patient care standards (7). Nurses need to continue this self-dialogue to promote positive development both professionally and personally
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I also learned that pre-writing...

He further states that those companies who lose sight of effective communication can lose up to 15% of their market valuation (Maggiani). Organizational studies further solidify that not only is profitability improved, but also employee retention is improved (Watson, Wyatt & Company).
