The discourse community to which the text belongs to is the Engl 20, section 47 class. The professor, Daniel Hammond, is the expert in this community who helps teach the novices, the students of that class. The text acts as a guide from the expert for the novices to follow. Without such a piece of writing, the students would not not know what is expected of them in the class and basically what to expect, in general, from the course they are attempting to take. In a way, the text also serves as an unspoken contract between the novice and experts so there is an understanding of what is required between both parties. Through the text, the members of this community are somewhat united in their common goal to have each student pass the standard level of college writing required to graduate from the California State University Sacramento.

I have learned a lot so far in English 1101, about myself and about writing. I have discovered that it is sometimes difficult for me to find topics to write about, but once I get an idea it is very easy for me to start writing. English has always been one of the subjects that I tend to struggle with, but this class has helped me realize that I actually enjoy writing. I have never really been able to write a lot about topics of my choice in the past. I am more accustomed to writing papers related to one specific topic. This class gives you a prompt to write about, but you are generally able to expand on that and choose your own topic as long as it relates to the prompt.
During the English 160 course, I improved my approach to writing and developing papers, build on critical reading and grammatical skills, and exceed my previous abilities to write a strong paper as I took into consideration different genre based audiences. If my improvement does not exemplify my determination to learn and prepare for English 161, then I politely request you review my portfolio.
I am concerned about the type of writing that will be done in English 1101, rhetoric writing is one of my weaker areas of English mostly due to the fact that I have a scientific mindset, I do best when the facts are presented to me. As I sat down in class on Tuesday my mind was rushing to remember when was the last time I wrote a paper which involved the writer’s opinion and not just facts, sadly none came to mind. During my short time on this earth all of my previous teachers specifically stated not to use first person and cut our thoughts out of our writing. My previous experiences will ultimately fail me unless I change my mindset, glancing over the syllabus I did notice that some facts might creep in to aid, particularly when it comes to arguing, facts will reinsure my rhetoric will have an impact on the audience. I can expect for this course to challenge me, it will be roller coaster, having its ups and downs, predominantly in the areas of understanding and answering the prompt, but in the end I am confident it will increase my writing skills by at least ten fold.

Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
English Composition II has unexpectedly improved my writing into an academic level. As I studied various English reading and writing courses, this class “English Composition II” did not immediately caught my eye. However as I researched about the concepts of this class, the decision to make was not so difficult since I was lacking in critical thinking and the interpretation of works. Also as a Business Major, it made sense that the subject of English would be of interest to me and as a career requirement. During the first weeks, I thought that I would be fully prepared for this course after taking an accelerated course in English during the spring semester. However, after attending class for about a month, I certainly did not expect to learn an entirely new process of writing
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Vocabulary- it is very difficult to understand a given text if a student is stopping at every other word because a student does not know those words. This is a very critical component and will be discussed later in this paper.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. The class’s main goal is to help improve our writing ability and help prepare us for upper level writing.
