Prior to beginning SPCH 100, I was a very nervous and anxious speaker and presenter. In my first speech, the introduction video, there were some key aspects that were easily recognizable by the audience. I think was a bit fidgety with my body language from my nervousness and anxiousness. My hand movements and lack of expressions were clearly present. My main concern while speaking has been of what the audience is thinking of me and what I am speaking and presenting about. It did take me few tries to complete all speeches, and in doing so I did learn quite a bit about myself, others in general, and how to become a better speaker.

The diversity of the audience most certainly affects how well ones’ speech will be received. That is why when preparing for a speech it is important to develop and present your speech in a manner that exemplifies your thoughts and ideas while still resonating with the audience. You would want to create an appropriate speech for the audience in order to make sure you keep their attention and focus. In this class I have learned much about how diversity affects ones’ speech. I do not think I have had a change to completely address an audience with much diversity, but in viewing many speeches of prominent speakers I was able to thoroughly see how they articulated their speeches to a diverse audience. For example, for my persuasive I speech I presented on the topic of chess. I do not think everyone will enjoy that speech, but I attempted to speak about it in a way that was positive and fun. One has to be aware of all aspects of diversity when they are speaking to an audience, whether it be a small group or a very large group. Understanding the needs of all genders, their ethnicity, and other personal beliefs will make you a better and more respected

During my demonstration speech, I was affected by my speech anxiety. Some of the viewable symptoms were the shaking of my hands and also the stuttering of speech. I was able to control myself and relax after I started getting into my information. I did use some of the suggested relaxation techniques to relieve my anxiety. Before I got up to speak I thought confident of myself to help give me courage and confidence.
The two principles that a speaker should consider when analyzing the audience and speaking occasion is avoiding stereotyping and sensitivity to diversity (Rothwell, 333). Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. For as long as I can remember, public speaking has always been one of my greatest weaknesses. Whether it’s a simple in-class presentation or a speech in front of an auditorium filled with people, I can barely get my words out from the anxiety and stress. I’ve always admired those who seem to be able to just flow through their speeches without as much as a hint of nerves. In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
Now the communication class is almost over I have realize how important is to have good communication skills, and how it is key to life. I have learned many things in this class for example ways to approach strangers. Another thing that I have learned how to handle conflict and how sometimes it could be good it not always bad and many others. The way I look things have change to have reach my goals. This class was has also taught me how to look in the “other” perceptive, and not being selfish by just seeing one side. All that I have learn will help me and other around me to be able to communicate better.
The content is the most important part of a speech. It doesn 't matter how compelling the organization or the delivery is, if you’re speaking about something like killing puppies- people are going to raise some eyebrows. This semester, I learned how much creative language can support a speech. Yes, you should use everyday language in speeches but using more colorful words can intrigue people which leads to a more engaged audience. I’ve definitely expanded my vocabulary this past semester and I feel like it was not only good for this course, but for my future courses as well. I’ve also learned the importance of knowing the audience I’m presenting to. By considering who will be listening to my speech, I can adjust the content of the speech to appeal to them.
CLAIM: Throughout the course of this class, I found the most challenging communication skill to be conversation starters. Especially when I was paired up with someone I wasn 't comfortable around, I often found myself at a loss of words. After obtaining this knowledge, I have came to the conclusion that if I practice talking to more random people, I will start becoming more comfortable overtime.
