To have an understanding of a subject is to have a ability to comprehend the subject. A question was asked in our Biblical Studies class, “what is our understanding of the Bible”, this is the reason for this paper to see if I have a understanding of the Bible. After the third attempt to answer this question I would have to say that I do not have a clue but I will get a educational guess for the fourth time. So here we go. It consists of 66 little books organized by book, chapters and versa designations. The Good Book (which my mother called it), Hebrew Bible or the Tanakh are not books at all but many scrolls. According to Harris (2011), “Biblical Book were typically written on papyrus, paper like sheets made from the papyrus plant, and the rolled around a small wooden stick” (p.13). So let’s take a look the Hebrew Bible canon. The Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) of the Old Testament established God’s presence, authority, and claim over everything. Genesis through Deuteronomy is called the Torah because God’s giving out his instruction to his chosen people. The second part of the Tanakh is the Nevim (the Prophets). The prophet’s act as God’s mouthpiece; God talks to the prophets then the prophets talk to the Kings or the people. I have a theory about prophet in the Old Testament. If a prophet came to you and you have sin before God then expect really bad news that can affect your whole family and other after you. But if you have been moral right before God and you have a need of something then the prophets could answer that question or need. The Tanakh broke down the Prophets into an order of Early Prophets and the Later Prophets. The Major Prophets are Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel and the twelve Minor Prophets which include: Amos, Hosea, Micah, Jonah, and Malachi. I have examined the relationship between God’s chosen people. The message of the Old Testament is that if they stay faithful and true to God’s standards and requirements, they shall have freedom, prosperity economically, militarily and politically within the environment that they live in. The bible is a reminder of the covenant and the relationship God has with his people. The Hebrew Bible depicts the ups and down of being a chosen people of God. Not only showing the flaws of God’s people, but shows how one God (Yahweh) is the only true God that will profess, protect and provide for his people. The purpose of the Bible, especially the Old Testament shows God establishes monotheism, a new covenant and a method of living a holy
