Writing Center Observation #1 I visited the Writing Center on Tuesday, September 27 to work on a book reflection paper for my religion elective. I met with Caitlin Ellis (Caity). When I arrived, Caity greeted me by name, which I appreciated because it demonstrated that she had prepared for our appointment by taking the time to read over the appointment notes. Caity set the initial tone for our appointment through her friendly greeting. Although I was a little nervous at first (I always am when sharing my writing with new people), Caity created an open space for learning in which we could both be confident in our respective roles as writer and reader. I know a lot of “tips and tricks” that I can use for good writing, but sometimes I get stressed out or simply don’t take enough time to remember to use them. Spending time with Caity helped me to slow down and focus on the basics for a while, rather than the complex content of my essay. One of the areas we talked about was sentence length variation. I have a tendency to use long, detailed sentences in my writing. I can usually construct these sentences correctly using commas, semi-colons, or colons. I do not, however, always take time to remember who my readers will be. Caity addressed this by pointing out a particularly long sentence in my paper. Once she highlighted this sentence for me, I figured out what her point was fairly quickly and started looking for ways to break up the sentence. Caity added to my repertoire of “tips and tricks” by explaining that while detail is not a bad thing, it can confuse the reader. As I went through my paper looking for sentence length problems, Caity had me consider whether the subject of the sentence changed as the sentence continued or whether my reader was likely to be confused by the
In an excerpt of Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay," Marie Foley reveals how the Five-Paragraph Essay formula contradicts writing instructor's most basic goals. Foley shows that the formula deters from generating individual thinking. In today's society, essays are used by millions of people in order to express their different ideas. The Five-Paragraph Essay formula was originally developed to help retain the efficiency and clarity of the essay. Foley, however, believes that this process eventually separates the student from his or her written expression and should be used only as a first step tool for beginning student writers. Foley insists that the formula blocks discovery, squelches authenticity and undermines the reader's need for coherence. Foley shows that patterns of organization and more natural thinking can benefit the student.

In Kerri Smith’s article “In Defense of the Five-Paragraph Essay,” She claims that the five-paragraph essay should stay taught in schools as a guideline for a well-structured essay. She explains the five-paragraph essay as an “introduce-develop-conclude structure” that even great expository writing follows this structure (Smith 16). She purposefully communicates to her audience this idea to show that this structure gives students the knowledge and capability to write a professional essay. It is well thought out from the beginning to the end. Jennifer started teaching in 1986. Since then, she has written magazine articles, textbook lessons, teacher resource books, reading programs, and picture books. Jacobson is also a literacy coach and an author-in-residence. From reading the introduction, I learned that she has accomplished a lot in the writing field. I think it is helpful to read that she started out as an ordinary teacher. I connected with her experience in the classroom when she was enthusiastic to teach her students about writing while at the same time being enthusiastic to learn from her students about writing. I am excited to teach my future students too. However, with my experience as a daycare worker, I have learned that children can also teach me a thing or two (Jacobson, 2010, p. 1-3).

Now, I not only have a new found confidence in writing and in my life skills. Mrs.Cohen provided proper feedback and guidance with each assignment. Due to this, my writing confidence flourished. Without this course, not to mention the teacher, I would not even think about applying for dual enrollment. I certainly feel I have improved in English classes and my passion was rekindled. Mrs.Cohen made me find the enjoyment in writing again and inspired me to be myself. I wish to keep my work ethic, strong to become successful while being myself and I will be forever thankful for
Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
I wanted to thank Ms. Geary for reminding me how much writing can do for me. It helped me realize that writing isn’t so horrible but it is just hard work. My writing skills have improved due to this class and all Ms. Geary had taught me. She made class fun with her inflections and just the way she says everything, her personality definitely showed through. I looked forward to class but never the homework. Finally after reading over my final drafts of: My Past as a Writer, Problematic Essay and my Exploratory Research Paper I realize that I have dramatically improved my writing skills in every draft thanks to revisions and some positive criticism for Ms. Geary. I think I am now ready to take on the next step in the English world.
The question of the day is how was Barbara Bileks English composition class and how it helped me better myself as a writer. The class overall was a very informative experience and I feel as I learned a lot. Whenever the class started I considered myself a mediocre at best writer and thought that I would never improve. However, Ms. Bilek taught me to become a better writer by using many techniques that I did not know existed. In high school, we were not taught how to write academically because to them it did not matter. Anything that we had to say was just a paper for them to read and it could not change their minds or influence them in any way. College is different because the university is a research institute meaning that our work if deemed worthy, could be used throughout the university as an example of good quality work or as a new discovery for the modern world. This class helped me in three ways: improving my writing ability, helped in expressing my opinion, and making me a better person in todays society.
This course is writing intensive; composing reflections, essays, and revisions to improve writing were all touched upon. My favorite piece of work is my short reflection on the Hazel Carby performance. She was remarkably fascinating to watch whether it was her medium of presentation or the messages she gave to the audience. Developing and practicing effective personal writing skills is crucial for recording individual expression and communication, logging personal experiences and preserving a culture’s civilization (Powell, Harms and Barry, 2006). Successful Americans in all walks of life depend on producing clear oral and written communication. A survey of one hundred and twenty major American corporations (Powell, Harms and Barry, 2006) finds that approximately eight million employees must demonstrate strong writing skills for employee retention and promotion. Two-thirds of salaried employees in large American companies have some writing responsibility; effective communications via e-mail and PowerPoint are often job requirements (Needles & Knapp, 2004).
Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
