method that work best form them and for all students in my classroom to succeed. One of the ways my CT was able to demonstrate standard six way by using sign language. I was able to observe sign language when we had the morning meeting. She taught the children multiple words that matched the season and would have the children sign it back to her. She also tough the children how to say good morning in sign langue and she went around the circle and welcomed all the children. This was selected because my CT felt like sign language was a good nonverbal way for children to communicate if they needed something without disturbing the rest of the class. She also used the good morning in sign language to make all the children feel welcomed in the classroom. …show more content…
When I introduced my lesson as asked the kids for a thumbs up or thumbs down if they remembered working with greater than or less than symbols and if they understand which way the symbol went. I feel like this worked pretty well because I was able to get a quick glance of how the students felt about the lesson before the lesson. I was also able to see which students would need a little extra help in the lesson. One thing that I found problematic was that I only got a quick glance of what the students thought about the lesson. Next time I did this lesson I would actually count how many thumbs were up and how many were down. In order to get a better observation of my students. The students learning was impacted by communicating to me, the teacher, how they felt about the lesson and how comfortable they felt with the material of the lesson. While doing the lesson I could tell the students who had their thumbs up were completing the lesson with no problem and the students with thumbs down were struggling a little bit. If students didn’t understand that material I would also try to explain the problem in a different way using working like bigger or smaller rather than greater than or less than. I was able to tell this by the worksheet of the student and the exit sheets. I had the students turn in the exit sheet and work sheet together, and if the students drew a smiley face on the exit sheet they …show more content…
This means that I could create other ways for students to communicate without disturbing the classroom. One idea that was reinforced was that as a teacher I want to use non-verbal’s to get an understanding of how my students feel about the material. With an understanding of how the students feel about the material the better you can help student who need the extra help if they feel like they don’t understand the material. Overall, I feel like I am making progress on using that standard. I say this because I feel like I was able to use non-verbal communication pretty effectively to understand how my students felt about the material but I can also improve this my possibility adding in some instructional media to communicate with the student to improve learning. One goal that I have when I have my professional semester is that I want to use interactive technology and media to help my students communicate and learn effectively. This is important because in today’s digital world it’s very important that students know how to use technology to learn and to be able to communicate with others. The other goal I have as a future teacher is that I want to use non-verbal to understand my students’ knowledge and help them grow and have an understanding of all the material and because of this understand be able to see progress in their learning. We need to adapt our verbal communication accordingly to the different situations. Working on a learning activity it is important that the children are focused and that we deal with any distractions
The thesis, or the main idea of the book, is that by using specific communication techniques, we can turn difficult discussions into productive learning conversations.
Acquiring a Language: American Sign Language vs. English In the Unites States and Canada, an estimated range of 500,00 to 2 million people speak/use American Sign Language. According to the Census Bureau, ASL is the leading minority language after Spanish, Italian German and French. ASL is the focal point of Deaf Culture and nothing is dearer to the Deaf people’s hearts because it is a store of cultural knowledge and also a symbol of social identity, and social interactions. It is a fully complete, autonomous and natural language with complex grammar not derived and independent of English.
..., and direct and control, conversations leads us to the multitude of methods we can utilize in teaching the art of communication. Each of us has a different foundation from which to start, but as we teach this art we will see the minds of our students expand as they develop more interest and take a more active role in their learning. These students will invariably have a richer, more fulfilling life as well as be more productive contributors in our world.
Effective communication is a key principle for developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. By ensuring that communication is effective it provides clarity on what behaviour is expected and a clear understanding of the tasks. In providing this children and young people will feel they are able to join in and it also provides positive experiences in variety of situations. The result is children will feel more at ease within the school setting and with those around them. By listening to what a child, young person or adult has to say a sense of value and self-worth can be achieved, which forms another factor in developing positive relationships, trust.
In the U.S. the fourth most common language is American Sign Language. American Sign Language or ASL is a way of communication for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. As common as this language is, many people know nothing about it so i decided to open myself to this challenge. I decided to dedicate myself to this topic and learn as much information on this language. I wanted to open myself up to a whole new community just like i had in learning Spanish and French. I wanted to take the next few months and learn as much as possible about something that i honestly knew nothing about. So what is American Sign Language? How much can i learn in 3 months?
Need. Need. Need. Thus begins the poem “Need” by Peter Cook and Kenny Lerner, a Deaf and hearing poet, respectively. In a social commentary about our dependence on oil, Cook repeats the sign for “need” (an X hand that flicks forward, away from the chest) before slowly becoming a moving image that looks similar to a drill pumping oil from the ground. This use of a specific handshape to represent an idea is the basis of American Sign Language. Additionally, the use of that same handshape to create a sort of story without forming actual signs is an example of imagery in ASL literature.
In learning about the deaf culture I have taken on a new understanding about the people it includes. Through readings and the lessons, I have learned that being deaf has both its hardships and its blessings. The beauty of the language alone makes one want to learn all that he or she can about it. In this paper I will discuss the beauty of the language and the misconceptions the hearing world has about deafness.
What’s the first thing you do when you get up in the morning? For most it would be waking to the sound of their alarm clock, but what happens if you cannot hear? What if you are deaf? The purpose of this paper is to explain and define American Sign Language (ASL), how it is used and who uses it. I will inform you about the origins of ASL, how it started the first deaf school. I will discuss people who influence ASL, and how ASL has changed over time, and I will also include interesting facts and weird signs.
As a teacher language is the most important tool in order to support student learning. The book Elementary Classroom Management by Kerry Williams discusses how language is an important tool to use “language can be a powerful vehicle for activating thought, and as teachers we need to be aware of the role it is playing” (ref pg. 196). The use of words and tone that the teacher uses to the students is significant in the behaviour of students. For example if a student is displaying

Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to children.
During the duration of this American Sign Language course, I went to two different deaf events. I went to the Silent Dinner at Edison Mall Food Court and I went the Florida Gulf Coast University Winter Games. Both of these events really opened my eyes to the deaf community and deaf culture.
There are slow learners as well as a mixture of fast learners in every classroom. These should be taken into consider and activities should be planned accordingly so that slow learners will not left behind and fast learners will not be bored. There are students with learning difficulties which will affect the teaching learning process. These should be taken into consider and teachers need to avoid things happening which as an effect in the teaching learning process. Behavior such as disruptive and destructive shows similar characteristics. These behaviors need to be discussed with the parents and necessary actions need to be taken to create a good atmosphere in the class. Also teachers will be able to identify different cognitive levels and learning styles. Some students learn through audio, some need to see visually while some of them learn by writing. So as teachers we need to have all these learning styles in a lesson to fulfill each individual. Planning should be done accurately which helps in the teaching learning process. Teachers play a great role in handling different children in the classroom. To build up an effective teaching process, these facts need to be taken into consideration. Teachers could think of different ways that they can implement in the classroom in the process of teaching and learning. Group method is one of the main teaching
