For this project I had to attend a board meeting and interview a member from the agency. I choose to go to a school board meeting at the Corcoran Unified School District. I specifically choose this agency because I grew up in Corcoran and I’m already familiar with the agency. I also choose this specific agency because I wanted to see what the school boards actually did for the schools and the community. I wanted to see how it was all incorporated to help students and their education. Since I had never attended a board meeting I was very curious to see and experience what goes on during the meetings and what ideas they come up with to make our education better. I attended the school board meeting Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting ended at 6:51 p.m. The meeting started out with the pledge of allegiance. The meeting then continued with a short summary of what was discussed in the last meeting. During the meeting the school board discussed the changes that they wanted to make to better the city and secure their students. They also gave reports stating how much money they had and where all the money was being invested. The school board members talked about a bright crosswalk sign with flashing lights, alerting drivers that students were crossing the sidewalk. This cross walk sign would cost the …show more content…
She got to sit along with the members and talk about how the high school was investing their money in their education. She talked about how the Spanish club had a Day of the Dead event that took place, the FFA field trip that took place and the Academic Decathlon Team field trip. The reason why these topics were being brought up was because the school board needs to know what is going on in the schools and because these activities request van transportation and other expenses to be paid for field trips and the school board takes care of
My assignment is a combination of two interviews. I interviewed an Assistant Principal, Ms. Katis Romig, as well as, our Curriculum Director, Mrs. Maria Petkanas. They are both responsible for the curriculum development and instruction for the school where I work, P.S. 811Q. I also learned a fair amount from Ms. Romig and Mrs. Petkanas including that District 75 Citiwide Special Education’s Deputy Superintendent, Ms. Barbara Joseph, had given the school feedback and suggested writing curriculum and textbooks. This was the only feedback she gave our principal during her observation last week.
At times, I noticed that the mayor would have probably been more attentive hearing from irate citizens than listen to Armenta trying to get clarifications to C-5. Unexciting as the council meeting agenda items might have been, it was still fascinating to see local government at work in such an orderly, proper fashion. We may disagree on particular ordinances or agenda items, but we will do so in an appropriate way that does not disrupt the city at large, and even though the topics of discussion were mostly mundane, students should still at one point or another witness their local governments at work. Doing so leads to a greater understanding for how day-to-day city improvements take affect and how important it can be to voice your opinion and be a leader within your community.
The main challenge that Rocky Road School District is currently facing is the several lawsuits from former parents and staff. As well as the lack of team work that is shown within the district. Having a meeting with all Principals in the Rocky Road district is a most. Negotiation of teacher’s contracts and the hiring of new qualified teachers which will help assist the testing scores for the district. Giving parents a sense of comfort that their children are being well educated is a key challenge. My main challenge will be getting all parties involved in the movement to “Strive for Excellence.” Our main concern is getting faculty, staff, student, parents and the community working together to make Rocky Road School District successful, it takes a team to fix such a messy situation.
By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. At this time, I became a group leader in an after-school program for a 3rd-grade class. This was my first time working with children and as imagined, it was a tough transition. The students were Latino and African American, living in poverty stricken neighborhoods with a dysfunctional home life. The program focused on students who were at risk of retention. A large number of students were below average and had been recommended to receive extra academic support. As a result of my time spent working and learning with the students, I choose an educational path.
I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. What is the board member most proud of about their school system and in their service to the school system?
I chose the October 27th board meeting. Right away I could tell that the members on the board were clearly articulate educators at various schools in Fayette County. I couldn’t unfortunately hear the names of the individual members on the board. There was 2 people who ended up addressing the board. One a reverend who had issue with the math scores that the district had which were novice. He was also unhappy that 40% of students in the district made a novice in reading. He didn’t like that 2/3rds of the African American students couldn’t read on grade level. He had a lot of support from the crowd as he got a lot of applause and he even had some people on the school board nodding in agreement.
I attended a Board of Education meeting on May 3, 2017. The meeting had a published agenda that was available on the website ahead of the meeting. A press release of the meeting was sent to local newspapers and uploaded to the school districts website on April 27th. The meeting began on time and started with the pledge and the call to order. The meeting then went into closed session so the Board of Education members could speak with legal counsel.
Ever since I started talking this class, English 1301, with Dr. Piercy, I have been able to expand my writing and thinking skills. Not only was I able to make more better essays but I also learned important topics such as how education creates an impact in the world. The most useful event for my learning was the civic engagement activity. The activity specialist allowed me to facilitate the lesson utilizing the game show concept of Jeopardy. The categories had different point values, where the members work together in groups to gain further understanding of the subjects mentioned. In addition, the activity focus on critical thinking and memory recall, where members had to make connections between different concepts. The opportunity to facilitate the lesson can enhance my program planning and teaching skills.
The meeting began when the school board members entered the large group instruction room and took their seats at a panel table angled to the side of the audience. The school board consists of nine elected members from the community. The members are as follows: Paul Ridley (President), Pat Vigliotta (Vice President), Helen Cumminskey (Secretary), Carla Manion ( Asst. Secretary), Timothy Bean (Treasurer), David Feely (Board Member), Keith Hatch (Board Member), Shane Oschman (Board Member), and Joseph Troutman (Board Member). Three members of the board were missing; however because of where the seats were located I could not see who was missing. Also, the member did not introduce themselves and left before people could address them.
I also had the ability to help Ryanne with interviewing the civil rights class. Students were able to tell us why they showed interest in doing the class as well as what the class had to offer. My parents arrived in the United States hoping for a better future not for themselves, but for the baby they carried in their arms. We would often move from relatives ' houses since my parents couldn’t afford renting an apartment themselves. We were fortunate enough to have caring relatives who didn 't mind us living with them since they knew the hardships we were going through.
