This class has been a really fun learning experience. Before this class, I didn’t really have any public speaking experience. I spoke in front of one of my classes last semester, but it wasn’t something I had to plan. I basically talked about things I worked on over the previous week so it was very easy. This class however has challenged me to plan my speech beforehand and try to get the attention of my audience in different ways like using an anecdote to start my speech. Coming into this class, I was a little nervous about how I would do and I had very little expectations of myself. I didn’t really plan on accomplishing anything at the beginning. I thought it would be an easy class where I would just record my speeches and get good grades. However, this class has been challenging in a good way. I came in just wanting to record my speeches and get my credit but I came out a much better public speaker. …show more content…
I’ve also learned how to preview the main points of my speech into my introduction to give the audience a sense of what I will be talking about. Another concept I mastered is how to use effective transitions to make your speech sound more fluid when going from point to point. Organizing the main points and going over them in the conclusion is another concept that I mastered during this course. How to research properly was also another concept I mastered. Learning how to use peer reviewed sources for research instead of regular search engine was a wonderful learning experience. Lastly the most important concept I mastered was how to cite your sources correctly both verbally and orally. I learnt that plagiarism is extremely frowned upon and not citing sources either purposely or by mistake is akin to
Over all this speech went relatively well but there is always room for improvement. I believe that the three most important aspects of this speech that I would need to improve and implement into my next speech would be the verbal citations, keeping my flashcards in order, and making sure that I plan out the time I need for my speech more carefully. I believe that improving these three things for my next speech would make a great
I felt very nervous prior to the session beginning. I get anxious speaking in front of groups of people, and I was fearful I would say the wrong thing, or not follow the Solution-Focused plan correctly. I was also thinking about what may happen and how the clients would react, and what they would say as the conversation progressed. However, after a few minutes, I started to feel more relaxed, and forgot about the classroom full of people who were watching me. I started to feel like I was in a real session with real clients, and my gut feelings just started to take over my nervousness.
After reviewing my speeches back to back, I realized that my public speaking skills have evolved dramatically. While I would like to have changes to my projects if I had the ability to time travel, but overall I am more than satisfied with my progression in public speaking. My level of listenability is still not flawless, but with some more practice and time I am confident that I could become a decent public speaker. Whether I will do anything as a public speaker is yet to be determined, but I do know that I walked into this class with the simple expectation to acquire my honor credits, but was fortunate enough to part with experience that will be applied to the rest of both my academic and occupational careers.
I really don’t like to give speeches, especially in front of all my friends, but I knew that once I walked into my 2nd period advanced English class, I would have to. I knew that what was about to come after I was finished reading it, was not going to be pretty. I could imagine that what I was about to read would stick with me for the rest of my high school career at Nelsonville-York high school with all of my friends teasing me about it, and my teacher, Mrs. Maria , teaching all of her future freshman classes of what not to write about. As I saw all of this happening, I knew I had to prepare to face the consequences that would come when I was finished. Little did I know that this speech was going to be a huge turning point of my high school career, and affect the way I give speeches and how I talk to people.
I've learned that I am a stronger writer than I thought I was since I found that it was quite easy for me to prove my thesis statement clearly. Having to do pre-writing helped me discover certain flaws in my work and has made my writing much better than it was before I started the class. Being able to improve my ability to elaborate and discuss evidence/quotes even more would have been most helpful to me after completing this course.
I believe that, if I feel nervous in the future, I will not be afraid of this emotion like what I did before. This course provided me knowledge on how to make me relax. Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. Thus, I am proud to say that I have fullfilled the course objectives and enhanced my public speaking
Over the course of the semester I realized I’m very far from a perfect public speaker but I can aspire to become one. With the feedback I have received over the semester and from evaluating my strengths and weaknesses while looking at my delivery, content, and overall assessment, I can become a better public speaker and a better speaker overall. You words are valuable in the world of academia and even more valuable when you know what you’re doing with them.
As I said before, I was never an outgoing child. This class helped me, through experience, develop into a person that can confidently deliver a speech. After I was able to get over my extreme fear of public speaking, I was able to focus on my verbal and nonverbal skills. For my verbal skills my volume has always been a problem. Since I am a quiet person, I am constantly challenged to talk louder so everyone will hear and I can convey my thoughts with confidence. In my first couple speeches I received plenty of feedback that said to talk louder. When I felt more comfortable about my speech deliveries, I was able to focus on projecting my voice. For my nonverbal skills it was very difficult for me to have a good posture and keep eye contact. I got a lot of feedback saying that I should straighten up my posture and not sway as much. I forgot about this many times but for my final speech I actually wrote on my outline to not sway. This helped me remember to stand straight in order to present a more formal speech delivery. Finding the balance between memorizing my whole speech and only the main points was difficult for me. In my first couple speeches I wasn’t comfortable enough in my speech to be able to make frequent eye contact and not read off of my outline but in my final speech I wrote only the main points down and tried to deliver it as extemporaneously as possible. It is just a manner of overcoming my fears to be able to put myself out there to speak at my fullest potential. I truly enjoy that my public speaking class has already enhanced my knowledge and ability to give great speeches. In this reflection of my public speaking class I shared my thoughts about the class, my strengths and weaknesses as a speaker, my speech I am most proud of, my speech that was the most difficult, and the areas I need to improve on. I know that with more experience and time spent in public speaking, the class will help me become a more skilled and professional public

Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. Enrolling in this course seemed to be challenging and out of reach for me at the beginning, but as we completed our first few lectures and assignments I knew that I would undoubtedly improve my reading, speaking, and analyzation skills in Spanish. It came time for creating our first presentation, which would be presented in front of the entire class, without note cards all from memory. I never really had to read, analyze, and summarize an article in any of my previous courses, especially in Spanish. While taking Spanish classes in high school, I was just handed a worksheet with specific instructions to prepare a PowerPoint and note cards about casual and nonchallenging things. Even though I was captain of my speech team for my junior and senior year of high school, I have never been the best at giving presentations in front of my peers individually.
The most important thing I am taking away from this class would be the extemporaneous delivery skill. I think it 's important to use to the 7 x7 rules while using the extemporaneous delivery skills to present the speech. I felt that this skill is commonly used in the real world. This skill can be used for various purposes like selling consumer products and other projects. I have used this delievery skill for minor and major speeches for this class. Overall, I’m glad I took this class because I improve my public speaking skills and I overcame my fear of public
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
Through evaluating my classmates. I have been able to improve on my speaking skills. Evaluating others enabled me point out common mistakes made during public speaking and through teaching them on how to avoid such mistakes has made me learn how to avoid them too. On similar lines, evaluating others has enabled me add to the existing body of knowledge new vocabularies which is very important to my public speaking skills.
