Reflection Paper #2
I feel like the last two weeks have personally been physically and mentally draining. However, some of the techniques we have been practicing in class have become part of my coping methods. Besides midterms, papers and other school related projects, I have been struggling with my health. I was in and out of the hospital a few times—including impromptu emergency room visits—and fights with family members. I have been less focused on my activism and social justice work and my mindfulness, or attempts at being mindful, have been targeted at my personal life instead. Although we discuss mindfulness in context of our work in social justice, everything we discuss applies to our daily interactions.
Wanting to implement or improve justice for others calls us to abide to a certain set of rules and ethics in our lives outside of our work. For example, it would be hypocritical for me to advocate for undocumented immigrants to be guaranteed fair wages and withhold such a wage from an undocumented

This week I participated in a panel on mental health and body image. Keeping this in mind, as well as the tips from our tough conversations workshop, I definitely tailored my narrative, the words I chose to the audience—many of whom suffer from Anorexia and Bulimia. I also offered to change the format from a question and answer panel to a circle, similar to the talking circles we have in class This helped facilitate dialogue and made the panelists and attendees more comfortable speaking to each other. One of the powers of the talking circles over the use of podiums and stages is that it eliminates the hierarchical systems and norms that we often see in lectures, in our homes, church,

On May 25th 2016 I officially started an internship with Montgomery County’s Department of Mental Hygiene. The department consists of one hard working woman named Sara Borenko who was my supervisor and boss throughout this internship. One of the main duties of Sara’s job is the funding of community programs that are aimed towards helping the mental health community. In fall 2015 I took a class called Community Psychology and while working at this internship; I applied what I had learned from that class and used it to my advantage. Some of the lessons I applied included social oppression, community organizing, stress and coping, and emotional support. Before taking this internship, I didn’t realize how much my county had to offer as for services. I’m inspired by the community and its strides towards helping the mentally ill. I’ve learned a lot during this internship. I’ve gained experience in the field, I’ve grown a broader
Health is a complex concept, and when we talk about health we refer to body health and to the health of the mind, the health of relationships between us and those around us, the spiritual health. Looking online on one of the additional resources recommended, www.nimh.nih.gov, I have noticed that one of the symptoms of most diseases that affect a person's mental health is lack of sleep. Lack of sleep not only worsens man's mental health, but also causes serious imbalances in metabolism, immunity, general mood, and last but not least, affects the ability of learning and memorizing among students. The sleep fulfills a number of vital functions for both our mind and body. We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, which is a valuable and useful
A social need that is experienced worldwide is mentally illness. Mental illness in my opinion is one of the most neglected, as well as, the most vulnerable population and today time. The reasons being, a lot of people, as well as, professional people do not understand the disease. So therefore, if they do not understand the mental illness disease, how can they be an assist to the person/persons who suffer with the disease? When I say professional speaking of the law enforcer (police). And the economic unjust is there is not a lot of funds to enhance the improvement with this problem. In addition, there is not a lot of people who are competent or knowledgeable about the illness.
The mental health assessment is a crucial part in everyday nursing care as it evaluates an individual’s mental condition to assess for risk factors of mental illnesses and provide optimal care and treatment. Mental health is described as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” (CDC) If the patient not mentally healthy, they can develop mentally illnesses, which can affect treatment and the disease process of physical ailments because without mental health a person cannot be completely healthy. “Suicide Risk Assessment in High Risk Adolescents” is a nursing article that outlines suicide risk factors and prevention strategies for assist nurses in performing mental health assessments. "One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws." Martin Luther King's words, which just correspond with the above assertion, perfectly tell us what to do in face of laws, either just or unjust.
My experience in mental health clinical was very different from any other clinical I had before. In a mental health clinical setting, I am not only treating client’s mental illnesses, I am also treating their medical problems such as COPD, diabetes, chronic renal failure, etc. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the unexpected events. In this mental health clinical, I learned that the importance of checking on my clients and making sure that they are doing fine by performing a quick head-to toes assessment at the beginning of my shift. I had also learned that client’s mental health illness had a huge impact on their current medical illness.
According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), it defines mental illness as Mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in thinking, emotion or behavior (or a combination of these). Mental illnesses are associated with distress and/or problems functioning in social, work or family activities. (What Is Mental Illness? (n.d.). Retrieved June 26, 2016, from https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/what-is-mental-illness). Mental Disorders are a wide range of mental conditions that affect mood, thinking, and behavior. There are a lot of different psychological disorders here is a list of the major psychological disorders and their definitions:
In the article “An experimental investigation of the impacts of biological versus psychological explanations of the cause of mental illness”, by Danny C.K. Lam, addresses the fact there is tension between the biological and psychological accounts of the causes of mental illness. Additionally, this tension is evident in research, theoretical work and professionals’ distribution of information to both patients and the public. Furthermore, the aim of this study is to use experimental manipulation to evaluate the impact of causal labels on the perception of a number of psychiatric problems. This study was designed to investigate the extent to which psychological and biological explanations of mental disorders would influence the participants’ perceptions
As I gradually make my way through this semester, I have come to realize that I am called to go into Psychology. I love watching people and trying to figure out why they act the way that they do. I, also, love knowing that I have finally figured out what careers I want to pursue. I want to become either a clinical or counseling psychologist, which both have the same requirements for everything – majors , classes, ect. So, I do not have to decide right off the bat on which career I want to pursue. Since I am planning on majoring in Psychology, I decide to do some research on my own, as well as go to a major’s fair hosted at the IU Southeast campus.
Depression and various types of mental illness is seen more frequently in people over the age of sixty-fix years old. There are many different factors that contribute to the higher rates of mental illness, including depression and suicide, seen in the elderly population today. It is exceptionally important for not only the elderly, but people of all ages to be educated on how we can reduce the high rates of mental illness in people over sixty-five. According to Edelman health promotion is “The service and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health. The process of advocating health to enhance the probability that person, private, and public support of positive health practices will become a societal
In this psychology class, I have learned about the different types of psychology. Before this class I always thought psychology was only the study of emotions. Later in the class I learned00 that psychology can be the study of the brain, emotions, disorders, and many others. Since I took this class I don’t understand how many people can get a psychologist and psychiatrist confused. A psychologist can have a Ph.D. or a Ed.D. A psychologists can be broken down into two categories such as research and clinical. Research psychologists study human behavior and could work for a wider range of employers. A clinical psychologist may work with patients who are mentally or emotionally disturbed. A psychiatrist is basically someone that is a doctor, they
Today I would like to talk about mental illnesses and mental health issues. For anyone that doesnt know, a mental illness is a disease of the mind. A Report of the Surgeon General defines mental disorders as “health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior associated with distress and/or impaired functioning.” Everyone has difficult emotions from time to time and this is normal. Mental illness, on the other hand, is any condition that makes it difficult to function in daily life. Mental health conditions go beyond these emotional reactions and become something longer lasting. They are medical conditions that cause changes in how we think and feel. They are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing.
Mental health refers to the state of individuals psychologically, emotionally and socially. Mental health affects a person’s emotions, feelings, thoughts, and sections when exposed to different situations. Furthermore, mental health is responsible for a person’s reaction to stress and other social conditions. Generally, mental health affects how a person relates to others and their ability to understand and interact with them. Therefore, problems that affect a person’s mental health affect the abilities to socialize, their feelings, moods, reaction to situations. The person experiencing mental health problem may portray different behaviors when confronted with different issues. Mental health issues have several
In this review, there will only be research included that classifies depression as a mental disability among adults. In these studies, depression is handled as a illness that requires proper treatment to overcome. Besides the use of pharmaceutical drugs an alternative type of therapies, such as acupuncture, can be used to help suppress and resolve these taxing symptoms of depression. When looking at the criteria that would be used for this study, it was determined that only studies that contain Eastern acupuncture would be used. This includes the methods of cupping, heat lamp acupuncture, electrical stimulation and moxa. It was also determined that studies that focused on human trials would be allowed. This systematic review only includes CINAHL
