Round One Reflection Questions
How is Le Jardin the same and different than how you remember elementary school?
I did not attend an elementary school, I was homeschooled. Therefore, there are a plethora of differences. I did not have different teachers, I did not interact with other students, and technology was considerably less impressive back then.
In terms of similarities, my mother (and teacher) also tried to instill the worldwide perspective that Le Jardin emphasizes. She tried to teach my brother and me to speak three languages - Japanese, French, and English. French was soon dropped, but Japanese was not. IB education is more inquiry and interculturally based. Students are encouraged to celebrate the diversity of the modern world through intercultural learning. Le Jardin believes that one of the best options for a better world is through effective education. Instruction is not definitive, but informative and it is reviewed regularly, for the ever changing and complex world. When returning from lunch, students would have quiet time for ten minutes. During this time, they could read, write, or do some other type of work. This was done to help students wind-down. Before heading off anywhere, students were told to quietly line up in an orderly fashion, to keep order and minimize the disturbance to other classes as the students walked across the school. In the library, there were pillows and other comfy items that students were permitted to use as long as they behaved. If they did not, those privileges were taken
