The process of constructing the plan took a long time. I read books on Christopher Columbus, Marco Polo, Walter Raleigh and Ferdinand Magellan. I was planning to cover all of the explorers in my four lesson plans. Each lesson would cover one explorer and we will read the book together in the class. I talked to my teacher about my plan but she told me that I should do Christopher Columbus. So I chose Did Columbus discovered America? However, as I was discussing with my teacher again, she suggested that I should change my book. I had to change my book again and I was frustrated at first but soon I realized that Mrs. L made a good decision for me.
By focusing on Christopher Columbus, students were able to learn detailed information on the explorer. The book contained too much information that was hard to cover in one or two lessons. I decided to read two chapters in each lesson. I wanted to do creative activity in my unit, but we had limited time for reading. There were not enough books for all the students so they could not read at home. As the result, students had to share the book and read during class time which took half of the class period.

A week before I started my lesson, I found out that I am teaching students in Mrs. L’s reading class. There were seventeen students in the class. Among them, I knew only four students who I see every day. This was challenging because all of my lessons that I prepared through observation would not work. Some of the problems when studying history are the texts and documents that have been discovered are only from perspective. Furthermore, on occasion that one perspective is all there may be for historians to study. A good example of this textual imbalance can be found from the texts about the discovery of the New World; more specifically, the letters of Christopher Columbus and Pêro Vaz de Caminha during their voyages to the New World. Plenty of the text from this time is written from the perspective of the Europeans, as the Indigenous population did not have any written text. Despite being one of the most renowned explorers in history, Christopher Columbus’ legacy remains controversial. The debate on whether Columbus should be celebrated has captured news headlines for decades. While many view him simply as a gifted Italian navigator who laid the seeds for the colonization of the New World, history paints a much more complicated picture. His journal entries and eye-witness testimony reveal Columbus to be a man of intolerance and indifference towards those deemed inferior to himself. Christopher Columbus’ treatment of Indigenous’ people, in addition to his ethnocentric worldview, allows for the conclusion that he should not be idolized as a hero in the modern age.
Christopher Columbus is a mythical hero or in other words, not a true hero. The story of Christopher Columbus is part of the many myths of Western civilization. Also the story of Christopher Columbus represents the power of those that are privileged and in most cases white European men that have written this mythical history. Zinn (2009 exposes the truth about Columbus through eyes of the people who were there when he had arrived which were the Native Indians (p.481). I didn?t know much about Columbus, but when it was taught to us as a class, which was rarely, the lessons were brief and covered only the ?positive? things that he did. That is, from the eyes of those who believe Columbus was a noble man. It wasn?t until 6th grade when my teacher showed my class the book Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong by James W. Loewen that we opened our eyes and saw reality. We had been deceived. Deceived by videos. Deceived by books. Deceived by teachers. But at least it felt good to know the truth-finally.

After Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean and found the New World the Europeans got to meet the Native Americans. The Europeans who began to come to the New World after Columbus were people like Francis Daniel Pastorius, from Pennsylvania, Francis Louis Michel, from Virginia, and Christoph Von Graffenried, from North Carolina. These people met Native Americans from the New World like Shickellamy, from New York, and Minavavana, from French Canada. All these people had no idea there was another side of the world so it makes sense that there was some disagreement between the two different sides.

Parents might even inform their young children about the adventures of Columbus before they are able to go to elementary school. According to elementary teachers, Columbus’s objective in his travels was to find a shorter and quicker way for trade with the Indies. In the years leading up to and including 1491 European explorers had been researching and studying the world, however they lacked a real understanding of the true size and geography of our planet. When explorers finally began setting out on their expeditions in the late 1400’s, the world began to experience serious change.
