Reflection On Vacation Bible School

I had the opportunity to do my field experience during vacation bible school at my church. Each year, my church host a vacation Bible school for children and adults of all ages. This year’s theme was “Shining Stars”. I was selected to co-teach the younger elementary class that consisted of students from the ages of seven and eight. The majority of the students had completed their first year of second grade and was being promoted to the third. The course of our vacation Bible school included different lessons for four nights.

The first lesson began on a Tuesday night with the topic of “Hearing God’s Call. The memory verse for this lesson came from 1 Samuel chapter 3 and verses 1 through 10. Before I began the lesson, I decided to do an icebreaker

warm-up. This activity allowed the students to introduce themselves and to feel comfortable when working with others. The icebreaker that I chose to do was call the color of my life. I passed around a plastic bag of M&M’s and told the students to grab a hand full. While the students passed the bag around, I wrote on the board the different colors of the M&M’s. For each color, I also wrote a word that equals that color. For example, the color blue equaled family, the color green equaled school, and the color yellow equaled friends. The students stated their name, age, and one fact from their color selection. The students loved sharing their thoughts with the class, and the part they liked best was they had the chance to eat the M&M's.
