Summary Overview The death penalty has been a very popular topic throughout history. Hearing the word death is scary enough for some. But hearing the word death penalty, well that is a literal “Death sentence”. Why do we have the death penalty? “The presence of capital punishment in America feels more threatening, at least to American and European scholars and activists, than its occurrence elsewhere in the world” (Meranze, M., McGowen, R., & Garland, D. 2011 pg. 1). This capital punishment is still performed in many states in the United States of America. Many feel that this is an issue involving human rights and that it’s considered inhumane (pg. 1). Before I even did any research on this topic I automatically was for the death penalty. When looking up different topics I saw reasons why some were against the death penalty. At first I did second guess my first opinion. Then after furthering my research I decided to stick with my original thought, which the death penalty is important to have. I reside in a state that the death penalty is not performed. I was surprised to see that many countries have actually abolished this form of capital punishment. I came across many arguments how the death penalty doesn’t deter the population from participating or performing heinous crimes. That made me think back to growing up, I wouldn’t do something I wasn’t supposed to because I didn’t want the consequences. So I applied that to the death penalty, if you don’t want to die at someone else’s will, why take someone else’s life? But unfortunately these crimes will continue to happen, death penalty or
