Reflection on the Day: While I didn’t necessarily get to do a whole lot this time, I was able to learn a lot about the students and the IEP process, which I really enjoyed. The IEP was such a cool experience! I’m sure I’ll get to do many of those over the course of my career, but my first one was definitely good. The mom showed up and was very talkative, especially in regaling the story of her son skipping school on Friday. She and her husband (but it was more her) were not pleased and laid down the law the next day: the student had to get up early and work outside just like it was a school day, taking the same structure of a school day, and was only allowed to watch the MSU vs. UM game for a little bit. I was so proud of them! It was such a good thing and such a confidence booster to them. On the other hand, one of the students refused to say anything at all, even when he was called on. This is the same student who was really pushing the buttons of the student with an emotional impairment. After learning he had ADHD and reading a little about the symptoms in the book, his behavior that day made so much sense to me. His behavior was still stressful for me, because I didn’t know how to handle it, but at least I know why it was happening. Something that was a bit newer to me, too, was seeing the science test read aloud to the students. There were a few questions Amanda guided them through a little bit more, which was interesting to me. The students definitely benefited from it, and I think it was probably necessary for them to do well on the test. It just was a bit unexpected that she would do that. When pulling students, like during the science test, Amanda always walks around the classroom first to touch base and let them know that they are going to be pulled. I love the fact that she added music to her lesson which helps with the multiple intelligence students. She gave directions and introductions to the class verbally and visually. She also begins the lesson with a song and rhythm to set up the lesson. Nina was able to used her talent to bridge the gap between music and language arts. Her expressions in her face and her voice reflect the tone of the story and she paused to ask questions and allowed time for answers. Nina’s lesson taught rhyming, rhythm, and word phrases and she showed patience with different interruptions that arise. She also had the students engaging in the lesson by keeping beat on a tambourine which showed her students were comprehending the lesson being taught. Rereading certain parts of the book and the way she added music to her lesson, I notice it was easier for the students to recall parts of the story. The only suggestion I would add to the lesson is give every child a hand drum to keep the rhythm or beat and add another song at the end to tie it all
In conclusion, my first impression was wrong, the classroom was not some kind of battlefield of teacher and student casualties. The students were not a lost cause that I imagine them to be. The students were well mannered and just wanted to be treated with respect. The classroom management was impeccable and astounding. It goes to show that although you may think you know a group of students you can be very mistaken.
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
After I finished my observation I learned lot things I hadn’t realized by how they interacted with each other. I've been around children before but never analyzed their behavior or explained it using psychology. I have a newfound appreciation and sympathy for elementary school teachers, the kids still have a lot of cognitive developments growth to do and it takes a benevolent person to do such a work. Overall I found the experience fascinating and enlightening.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
My student inspired me to be a better, stronger teacher, while I inspired him to be a more cooperative and productive student, with fewer outbursts. From that moment on, I had a new understanding of the quote “so often you find that the students you’re trying to inspire are the ones that end up inspiring you” (Junkins). I was able to break down the walls of the students and not only become an educator, but a confidant. He could tell me if he had any outbursts that day and why or what he wanted to do after school or in the future for that matter. He started the class not speaking a word to me and by the time my field experience was completed, the student was holding conversations with not only the other undergraduate students, and his classmates, but also myself. He had made a complete turn around. This still brings a smile to my face and tears to my eyes, because at that very moment in time, during my last day with my student I realized how much I wanted to become a school counselor so that I could help thousands of other students just like
The observation helped me gain knowledge that will help me in the future. When watching Mrs. G, I noticed interactions with students are what led to a pleasant classroom environment. If I am able to interact with students the way Mrs. G did, I know I can be a triumphant teacher. Also, the observation taught me that my strengths play a key role in being a successful teacher. Observing this classroom has opened an unseen perspective that society is not fully aware of in the world of teaching.
I feel like the voice that stood out to me the most had to be Charley’s Dad. I think it was super brave of him to discuss the struggles that his son was dealing with and even the stuff he had to go through with the different staff members that worked at Charley’s school that were not doing their part or not even doing anything to help benefit Charley’s needs. It is definitely sad to say, that there are those educators out there that do not treat their students that have a disability with the respect and help them with their needs that they deserve. Before my first day of my special education placement, I was nervous because my students were seventh and eighth graders. This was huge difference coming from kindergarten general education. I did not what to expect other than I knew I was going to have a lot of students with specials
The stimulations were really eye opening. I was able to see through the eyes of a child with a learning disability in different areas. I always understood that children who have learning disabilities learned differently, but I didn’t imagine how extreme the difference could be. The problems were hard for me and became frustrating. I now know firsthand how frustrating it can be for students who have learning disabilities in different areas. It’s amazing what extra time or shorter questions can do to help increase understanding. I realize that some things that come naturally to me may be extremely difficult for someone who learns differently. As a new teacher, I will make sure to teach children strategies and develop assignments that increase student understanding.
I gave the kids activities, provided the children with crayons and blank papers to look at the list of food and draw a picture of the healthy foods choices. The class was provided a copy of my power point presentation and resources. I needed the class, adults as well as children, to have a copy of the presentation so they can follow along. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at.
