I created a listing of the foods that I eat on a daily basis. And after I compared my servings, and the types of foods I was eating I was astonished.
Prior to September 28th, 2016 my eating habits were very unbalanced. I was guilty of skipping meals, and or over indulging on other meals.
A lot of my meals consisted of fast food, or poor choices of high calorie choices like chips, M&M 's, and beef jerky. The only healthy meal of my day were my dinner choices. Even then, after doing the research on My Plate 's Daily check list and food recommendations I found there were several times I could do to make my choices healthier.

I do feel that there is an issue with proper nutrition, not just in the United States. Unhealthy choices are made so readily available, and consumers do not have the proper discipline to say no. I know that I don 't say no all the time, soda 's, and certain sweets are still a down fall. The poor choices that we are making are leading to obesity, diabetes,and heart attacks.

Of course, purchasing a bottle of dressing last 's many servings, as well as crouton 's. But I combined the price of those as though I 'd just purchased them. My total would round up to $8.00. I managed to get 5 servings out of the head of lettuce with several other supplies left over such as the tomatoes. My total price per serving $1.60.
Of course a salad from a Fast Food chain of any kind will run you any where from $4.50 upwards of $10.00 for one serving. We all know it is easier just to purchase things that have already been done for you. It is the price of convenience. This is why I feel we have become lazy in our ways.
I feel that some of the ways we could correct this growing issue, is implement more farming classes in schools. People are naturally proud of what they are able to grow, and would be more enabled to eat healthy from the harvest they produced.

The American diet is full of on-the-go amenities from an array of different meals; however, is this fuel actually causing harm to the body in the long run? What is in the American diet that sets American’s health apart from other parts of the world? The documentary Forks Over Knives states that “We spend 2.2 trillion dollars a year on health care, over five times more than the defense budget. In fact, we pay more per person for healthcare than any industrialized country in the world, yet we’re sicker than ever” (Forks Over Knives). Studies are finding that the excessive consumption of sweeteners, meats, and dairy products are many of the leading causes of American’s health failure.
Forty-eight percent of individuals who cooked dinner six to seven times a week consumed 2,164 calories, 81 grams of fat and 119 grams of sugar daily. They were also able to conclude that those who consumed home-cooked meals depend less on frozen foods and are less likely to choose fast foods. However, as explained in, “Tasting food, tasting freedom: excursions into eating, culture, and the past” Sidney Mintz explains in chapter eight that the majority of Americans often choose to eat out at fast food joints because of the convenience of these meals. Mintz states that these meals are usually diets, “high in animal protein, salts, fats, and processed sugars, low in fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking more soda than tap water.” This is where cultural, and social aspects create conflict when attempting to switch to this healthier lifestyle (although it is feasible). There is no surprise that food is important in all aspects of our lives—it is shared amongst families, celebrated as a major part of our culture, and crucial to our daily routine that keeps us fit, healthy, and active. Today’s western culture glorifies a skewed perspective on how food is supposed to fit into our lives. Somehow this perception has led us to believe we no longer have the time or money it takes to prepare a wholesome, healthy meal that is shared at the dinner table with family. Instead, we are trained to want a meal that is fast, cheap, and easy. This meal is usually highly processed and filled with sugars and fats. This has led us to a problem of epidemic proportions characterized by the rapid increase in obesity and diabetes.
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.

Most Americans do not care enough to take a look at the nutritional values of the food that he or she is consuming. That is why America has the highest percentage of obesity in the world. This is a serious problem because one in every three adults is obese, and one in every six children is obese. There are many factors that go into the regular American diet, but most of those factors are not appealing nor is it healthy. Americans put way too much processed food into their daily diet. Some would say that other countries diets superior the American diet because of nutritional values that it carries. Other countries have proven that an active lifestyle is a huge element in the average weight of the country. There are many things that Americans could change about their diets and lifestyle that would help them to become healthier.
Much too often, I eat without realizing what I am consuming. While tracking my eating over the two-day period, I learned just how much I usually eat without even realizing it. I have a tendency to eat out of stress and out of boredom; tracking my eating really added a new sense of awareness to my eating habits. I was surprised to see how misleading it is to simply count calories. In the past when I have tried to lose weight, I only focused on calories instead of nutrients. Even though calories do play a large role in health, tracking my food intake brought to light just how many more components there are of healthy eating. From now on, I will definitely start paying more attention to factors other than the calorie count on nutrition labels. I also learned that my lifestyle includes very little physical activity and is incredibly inadequate compared to the USDA’s goals. Tracking my physical activity was a huge wake-up call for me, for it showed me just how little I get active. Since we have been learning about nutrition in class, our task was to record a food log. Nutrition requires a well-balanced diet containing nutrient and vitamins like amino acids and fatty acids. Over the past seven days I have been recording and have been looking very carefully at my intake of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and fats. In our task, the objective was to record the basic foods we ate during the period of seven, but it did not require recording every single detail or our intake of food. Doing this food log was a pain and it was disturbing because I never wrote about what I ate like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or additional meals. I found this food log useful because it helped me learn what I can change in my intake of foods to make my diet healthy and to see what about my diet is affecting me from being healthy because I could affect me in the future.
For many years, I ate whatever I wanted without regard to the nutritional value of the garbage I was putting in my mouth. About six years ago, at the age of 44, I found myself feeling fatigued all the time. I had no energy and couldn’t even walk around the mall without giving out of breath. I also started having a lot of aches and pains. Even though my blood pressure was in the normal range, my cholesterol levels were not. I am only five feet three inches tall, and at that point in time, I weighed 148 pounds. I felt like I was carrying around a ton of bricks. I decided to make a change and started making good, healthy decisions about what I was putting in my mouth. I gave up fried foods, over-processed foods (especially anything with trans fats), foods and liquids high in sugar, and paid special attention to my sodium intake. From staying away from high calories to buying only foods with no steroids, consumers hesitate due to the food not falling in a certain price range that is acceptable to them. For example, David Biello in his article, “Will Organic Food Fail to Feed the World?” he states that feeding about 9 million people is going to be “very expensive” because of untold fertilizers that are used to maintain good crops to feed people. Food is also overproduced for likely triple that amount. While I was tracking my eating for these three days, I began to learn about the benefits of the food that I am eating and the nourishment that they provide for my body. I had never realized how big of a role that the food that I eat plays in my everyday life. Eating has never been something that I really think about it is just something that I do. After I looking at the data of what I eat on Choose My Plate, I realized that my eating habits are far from balanced and that I needed to work on bringing my eating habits to a better balance.
