Since my lab class of nursing practice in Ontario 1 (IEPN 125) has started, I learned about some medical devices and nursing practices which were different from my previous nursing experience, for example we did not have syringes with safety cap (needles with protective cap) in my work place.

These injuries could occur at any time when nurses use, disassemble, or dispose of needles. I was injured by contaminated needles at least three times as I remember. Now, I understand that I should do each nursing procedure based on its standard guideline and make my work environment safe. I know without using the safe devices I will be at risk of injuries. I also understand that I need to be knowledgeable and responsible for my safety. This experience change my way in practice as make me aware of negative effects of lack of knowledge. Based on my reflective learning, I will be more careful about occupational hazards and unsafe medical devices in the future. I also will prevent needlestick injuries by using the syringes with the safety cap. My learning needs according to this experience are getting knowledge about the possible risks and outcomes of using unsafe devices, occupational hazards and maintaining safety, using of the protective devices and preparing a safe work environment. In order to achieving these goals I should take part in some workshops, learn the guidelines, watch videos, read articles and books related to my goals in a specified time

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN’s) goal is to prepare future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) that are needed to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work. QSEN focuses on six main competencies; patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. As we have learned in earlier classes these competencies and their KSAs offer a base to help us and other nurses as we continue our education and become RNs. While on the unit I made sure to use my time wisely, I completed my assessment in a timely manner, advocated for pain medication, checked on fellow nursing students, and kept patient’s rooms organized and clean. Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. Nurses have both learning and teaching responsibilities. Continuing education for nurses is very important in order to maintain their knowledge and skills among the health care development. If it is true, that the ability of teaching is a complex process, one fundamental part of this process is the ability of the learner to receive information, process the information and carry out in practice. Learning, is a change in human ability or capability of willing to learn and act on the learning (Blais, Hayes, Kozier, & Erb, 2006); is a transformation of behaviors, existing knowledge, ability and values to change an area of need to become better as individual. When teaching how to use the EpiPen, the following components are applied and planned: detailed assessment of the learner, learner objectives, defined topic and outline for the learner, materials and teaching methods, teaching sessions with focus on an interpersonal process recording, and finally an evaluation of the teaching plan provided by return demonstration.
Nursing is considered one of the most trusted professions in the world. It is an essential part in the caregiving of sick, injured, and even healthy individuals. Developing a philosophy with any profession is the beginning basis of any practice. The nursing philosophy is usually incorporated from the science of nursing. That is because the field of health care is constantly changing, which causes the need of better competence in the health field of providing caring (Flagg, 2015). With nursing it starts by the science behind it. Then along with knowledge and experiences, that is when the nursing philosophy is developed. Researching differences between new ideas and cultural differences can then expand the viewpoint into a bigger picture.
Historically, the nursing profession has been actively involved in the health promotion and disease prevention among the general public. However, while caring for others, nurses often neglect their personal safety, which ultimately results in the high level of work-related injuries. Failure to timely address risk factors for nursing can have dire consequences for patient outcomes, since it is often associated with increased medication errors and patient falls, poor quality of care, and permanent disability of the nursing staff (Stokowski, 2014).
Innovation can be defined as a process for inventing something new or improving on an idea that already exists. In the past weeks, the course on Innovation in Nursing has motivated nurses to be strong critical thinkers, evidence-based practitioners, and innovative leaders in their specialty of practice and education. The following paragraphs will briefly discuss and elaborate on the eight learning outcomes listed in the syllabus.
In health care, safety does not only pertain to the patient, but to all of the staff as well. Although this is important, it is critical that nurses are safe, since they usually interact with the patients the most. If a nurse does not follow correct safety and health practices, they may cause harm to the patient, which may end up in a lawsuit if the damage is bad enough. If safety measures are followed and nothing wrong happens, this saves the facility money and it could possibly gain money if the patients refer the facility to other potential customers. Every facility should have a policy pertaining to safety measures, and it should be reviewed as needed. One thing that nurses will need to know is how to properly use lifts and
