Writing has never been a strong point for me. As a kid punctuation was something composed of periods. Then slowly I learned of a structure that was integrated into all papers and it made me a worst writer. Just the fact that an outline was required made what was a creative process became a demanding and uninspiring paper full of blah. As a kid I was sat at a table and told to do my work. Now i have learned that my writing greatly improves if I have music to listen to. In this class I have learned many skills that have helped put the creativity and inspire me to wright not only papers I care about but papers that are a bit of me every time I wright.
The writing process is something I never really did; I still don't do outlines. It used
to be that every time I would do a paper it flowed out of me until I was done or had nothing more to put on the paper I could regurgitate the same format using the same words onto the paper so I had something to turn in on the day the paper was due. Now every word I write is planed and the many ways that I could write the same sentence. It runs through my fingers as they hit the small black keys. Spelling out the long methodical words that together give a whole new meaning to true understanding. The details of descriptions in my papers have definitely improved with the paper I did on Steve Jobs. A skill that not only draws your reader in and helps them picture the small room, with a darker blue wall at the front and the speckled gray desks, but the author's true feelings. MLA sucks. A full sentence that has never been less true this semester. I have had the time taken to teach me proper ways to write and cite sources. With the practice I have had come with the papers we have written I'm now able to do my works cited without help from other resources. A skill that will be taken onto other parts of school as well as he next English class that I’m taking next semester. I can be man enough to admit I was wrong. Going into this class I was prepared to have a mother English teacher that just wanted a paper but didn't care to teach. I was ready to be I'm a class that I had to fly by the seat of my pants beacause I had no understanding of what was right and wrong when writing a paper. I was wrong. You are a very excellent teacher. No other teacher has taken the time to explained the format or even how to tie a thesis is to a paper like you did. Coming to this class on the first day I thought there was no more to learn, you showed me that there is still much for me to learn and I love writing when it is something I care about. The skills that it takes to be a writer I don't hold in my tool bag of tricks. In this class I have learned how to write a paper and cite my sources. This class has grow me as a writer and taught me how to better put my ideas and feelings on paper something I have never been able to do on a scale like this. For taking in the time, teaching me skills that I never had, and showing me writing is not just something for English majors, thank you.
Over my career of schooling my writing has changed dramatically at times and very little at others. Through my years of schooling people have determined my main weaknesses and strengths that I should work on with my writing. My biggest weakness is writing introductions and conclusions they must be so complicated and require so much thought to be defined as good. I excel at writing body paragraphs and explaining all the facts that back up your main ideas though.
Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
The journey through language and literature has always been an intriguing one for me. It is for this reason that I chose English as my major. It seems that every teacher or professor that I have had, has always been able to pinpoint one specific element in my writing that I need to work on. This has not been a negative thing by any stretch, because with each passing semester there is an element of my literature that will be perfected for the next. This is the wonder that is English, and the reason for my passion in this subject area.
Writing is a process I’ve grown to despise. Ever since grade school, I’ve had problems trying to express my ideas on paper. My writing process involves thinking about what’s being asked and trying to reflect my thoughts the best way I can on paper, but my thoughts don’t always come out as clear as I want them to be sometimes leaving a question not fully answered. My writing process isn’t a consistent set in stone process, but since being in ENC 1101 I always follow some of the same parameters such as revising my drafts, grammar usage and considering context and audience.
Anyone who is doing any type of writing piece has a process. They may not know it but it is there and it exists. It is one’s approach to their piece and how they go about accomplishing it. It has to do with how you write it, how many drafts you do, as well as your revision process if you even have one. My writing process however has room for improvement. A summation of my writing process consist of heavy planning, one draft, and little revisions. Anne Lamott, Shirley Rose, and Kathleen Yancey all drew attention to major points through their writing pieces that support and dispute my writing process. Through their pieces they have found a way to inspire, inform, and entertain me all at the same time while passing along great information that
As an incoming freshman in an enrolled in a writing course, but still in high school, I believe there are many aspects for me to learn from this course. Learning to become a better writer, achieving higher quality, and improvement of a great flow is what I want to achieve from this class in my future writing career. Being a high school student, I acknowledge that I am filled with more weaknesses rather than strength, but the knowledge that I had been educated for this class is pretty impressive as well. In addition the classes previous to this class set me up to a better fundamental to succeeded in this class and were emphasized the power of writing in my future career as well.
Writing is so much easier when you don’t have a ridiculous amount of guidelines you have to follow. With literary freedom, we are able to express ourselves more than if we have to follow a specific set of rules for every thing we write. This is one downfall for high school English. We have to order our papers in a specific sequence while writing about a topic that is chosen for us. This English composition class changed all of that. We were able to write about anything that related to the given type of essay, which greatly improved our ability to fully immerse ourselves into every paper. This greatly affected my writing thoughts about writing; they changed from hating to write for school to actually enjoying it because I was able to find new things about my self while deepening my knowledge for writing.
My portfolio will demonstrate the skills and writing techniques I have developed and honed while taking the course English 1010 at the University of Memphis. Some of the techniques and skills I have learned include how to write with different persuasive strategies on the audience and how to incorporate critical thinking into my work. As well as these skills I have learned how to apply an effective composing process to my writing and have fine tuned my writing abilities. Writing with different styles on different topics has improved the way I approach writing papers. These styles helped me learn quickly, therefore making me a better writer and student at the same time.
When I started this class I thought I was somewhat alright writer. I understood the basics of writing and believed I knew how to write an entertaining piece. All of the papers we wrote showed me one of my weaknesses as a writer.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.

English Composition 1 with Lab has been helpful to me, and I have learned to think more about my writings. With the six objectives in mind, I have successfully achieve them; although, there are areas to be improved.
Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
As I stated in my previous reflective essay, I hated writing in grade school. I sucked my teeth and groaned every time my teachers assigned an essay for homework. I don’t actually hate writing. I just disliked it because I never excelled in it. I wrote just to get the job done, but never took the time to pay attention to the writing process and the other aspects of writing. As I grew older and got a career, I realized how important writing was in the real world. From friends revising your status updates on Facebook that were plagued in grammatical errors or writing a professional email to your boss, writing skills are crucial to the real world.
