When I decided to change my major from Criminal Justice to Human Services, I had no idea how vast a field it is. I can get a degree in many fields in human services. When ask to do this assignment, I was prepared to do a different paper. I was very glad that I did get to do this project instead, because it gave me more insight into what to look for and where I might life if I was not stay to in Medina, New York. At first glance, to me the terms “human services” and “social work” appear to mean almost the same thing. It seemed to me that both fields involve working to provide services to those in need, to help them solve social problems. However, the particulars of work in human services and been a social worker introduce different distinctions
Similar to other professions and/or social issues, there has been tremendous growth within the history of the human services field. There are different specializations that fall under this professional spectrum such as mental health, social work, and crisis intervention as well as several others. Dating back to the 1700s, individuals have been providing services and resources to those in need. Although each era may has placed different emphasis on specific areas, the general operation still remained the same. For example, the age of systems era and the professionalization of human services era focused on different issues but yet shared collective objectives.
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as a part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social
The Human Service field can be challenging to people at times and rewarding as well in other moments of one’s career. What is the Human Services field exactly? According to the National Organization for Human Services they report that “the field of Human Services is broadly defined, uniquely approaching the goal of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” (NOHS, 2009).
A human service profession can be defined as a holistic and wellness approach that attempts to understand the individuals within the context of their career, love, and relationships, and group interaction from the counseling profession. According to Woodside &McClam(2015, p. 5), human service is derived from six perspectives such as the themes and purpose of human service, the interdisciplinary nature of human service, the helping relationship, management principles, professional and professional activities. These all six aspects are unique needs of individuals, families and communities. In human service work, social workers need to specialized body of knowledge and skill for each practice setting, each special population group, and each psychosocial issue. According to Clubok (As cited in Ed Neukrug, 2000, p. 33) human service knowledge base is derived as much from psychology, guidance, and counseling, nursing. My overall experience in Intro to Human Services was phenomenal. This class was definitely one of my favorite classes this semester. I loved the way it was taught and I was able to understand how human services works while reading the book Precious throughout the semester. This course isn’t an easy class that you can just relax and breeze through. It has a lot of fundamental chapters that explain the jobs of helpers also known as human service workers. I loved how we were supposed to read the chapters before class and then we would review in class. It made more sense by doing it this way. It never felt like we were rushing through the material and the pace of the class was perfect. I also loved how professor Oropall always was willing to explain
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.

Becoming a social worker is dependent on numerous factors, one of which being education. “A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) degree is the most common minimum requirement to qualify for a job as a social worker, however, majors in psychology, sociology, and related fields may be sufficient to qualify for some entry-level job” (Chao & Orr, 162). Many people when pursuing the goals of being a social worker, however, are most interested in jobs in public agencies and/or having their own practices. “A master’s degree in social work (MSW) is necessary for positions in health and mental health settings and typically is required for certification for clinical work” (Chao & Orr, 162). One’s level of school is not the only thing employers are focusing on when looking to hire social workers. Along with one’s education, a social worker must have “a broad liberal arts base which includes a knowledge of the social sciences (sociology, psychology, anthropology, history, political science, and economics) to provide explanations about the nature of human society and the human condition” (Johnson, 48). There are many more skills that are just as essential, if not more beneficial, to the employer as well as client.
This course has taught me a lot about the role human service workers have in communities and what communities need from human services. I learned about why this type of work is so important and was able to seen that importance first hand through my observation hours at the Dorothy Day Center.
For years, when I thought of Social Workers, I imagined a person coming into a client’s home and taking their kids away for neglect. Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
