1. The behaviour that I selected to work on over the last 5 weeks was getting more physical activity. My goal was to get the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommended amount of physical activity per week which is, to exercise a minimum of 150 minutes per week at a moderate to vigorous level. The reason I selected this activity and goal was because being in shape is important to me because it affects so many aspects of an individual’s life. Last year I would get an average of one and a half to two hours of exercise a day but once starting university I was only working out once or twice a week. When I did these workouts they would vary from 15- 30 mins and range from low to vigorous level of activity. My schedule and energy level would …show more content…
The buddy system is meant to help because partners or groups can encourage each other to continue with the health behaviour together and track each other’s progress (McAuslan, 2017). The second strategy that I used from part two was making a weekly and daily to-do list and a firmer schedule. I did this by making a daily to-do list on sticky notes and then also hanging up a weekly schedule in my room with all my due dates, assignments, and activities. This was done to make scheduling physical activity easier and so that I was able to fit it in. Both these strategies worked well together and complemented each other. The buddy system did not require much time and effort in order to do. All that I did in order to do this was text a friend asking if they wanted to work out, this required little time to do. The scheduling and to-do list took much more time and effort to do than the strategy of the buddy system. Making the weekly schedule took about 15 minutes per week and the daily to-do list took about five minutes every day.
c) What worked while completing this assignment was the buddy system, by doing workouts and exercising with my friends. This worked because by working out with someone it gave my motivation to continue working out not only with them but also on my own. I used the buddy system in between my individual workouts allowing me to have variety in my workouts. The buddy system also worked well for me because it got me to work out at the gym instead of in my room all the time. This allowed me to workout with equipment whereas in my room I was only doing bodyweight
There are many definitions to theory. According to Akers (2009) “theories are tentative answers to the commonly asked questions about events and behavior” (Akers, (2009, p. 1). Theory is a set of interconnect statements that explain how two or more things are related in two casual fashions, based upon a confirmed hypotheses and established multiple times by disconnected groups of researchers.
Most people have an aspiration to get rid of a certain unhealthy behaviour or to employ a new health behaviour that would benefit their wellbeing. Some examples include a wish to stop smoking, eating a balanced diet or getting rid of a sedentary lifestyle. Many psychologists have been trying to find a model that would help people fight these kinds of unwanted health behaviours. One of such is the Transtheoretical model of behavioural change (TTM) which will be the main focus of this essay. Specifically, how one’s sedentary lifestyle can be changed by bringing out a systematic exercising routine using TTM.
Entertainment in modern America is the key element associated with free time, whether it be surfing the web or watching a movie; pastimes that surpass class and gender. Up until the Victorian Era of England, leisure pursuits were only enjoyed by the wealthy. After the rise of the Industrial Revolution, however, the middle class grew and relaxing activities became numerous as free time was no longer only reserved for the rich. New forms of entertainment were enjoyed both by the working and elite as well as men and women of the Victorian Era to fill leisure time; a way of life that has continued through modern day.
more problems with the police, more use of force used by the police, and police misconduct. Because the citizens feel they can’t rely on the police, they often turn to informal ways of handling issues in their community.
The level of the population’s level of physical activity is becoming a major public health concern in the United States (Wahlgren, 2011). As a result of urban sprawl, Americans rely heavily on personal vehicles to travel to work or other destinations. This is leading to a sedentary life style for the public as they take to their cars to travel to their destination. The public’s perception of the environments in which they live in are likely influencing their behaviors resulting in their dependance on personal vehicles. (Wahlgren, 2011). The physical environment and peoples’ levels of physical activity are directly connected. Low density zoning and auto-dependent development is resulting in the promotion of sedentary life styles. Most activities, like commuting to work or shopping, requires the use of a personal vehicle because of the area’s isolation in residential zones and commercial zones (Ewing, 2010). Alternative modes like walking or bicycling are rather impractical, as the areas often have little to no sidewalks or other pedestrian friendly amenities (Marshall, 2009). The Low density design is developed because residential homes have fewer units per acre and commercial buildings tend to only be a couple of stories and spaced further apart. The sizes of lots tend to be bigger to accommodate large parking lots that are often oversized and unsafe for pedestrians.
What I learned from the behavior change project is that it can be extremely hard to implement a behavioral change. Even if there is a real desire to make the change there are extenuating circumstances in everyone’s life that will test their resolve to change. That makes a high prioritization of the change a must. This also means that an physician must be understanding of a patient who is having a hard time changing. Being supportive instead of judgmental is paramount. The project also taught me how to develop and implement a change plan. The change plan is the ground floor to the entire change and failing to commit the time and energy to developing a realistic and goal oriented plan is a mistake. Finally having a good experience advising a peer will help future patients giving me experience and confidence to draw on.
In March, my PSYC class was presented with a challenge - to identify a personal improvement goal and to address this issue using an Immunity to Change map. My lengthy list of personal struggles was quickly narrowed down to one item with focused reflection. My improvement goal was to engage in productive thoughts and behaviors that would provide better time management practices. I was initially looking to improve my behaviors at home so that it would translate into success in all areas of my life including my career. With thoughtful observation and consideration, the Immunity to Change (ITC) map provided a developmentally raw process that continues to help me focus on my improvement goal today. Although I am still working on this goal, this process created more opportunities to make significant development changes above and beyond my initial intentions.
Exercise: C.M. will work out at the gym for 30 minutes 5 times in a week. According to the physical activity guidelines, most health benefits occur with a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity.
Sedentary behaviour refers too much sitting or reclining, resulting in little or no energy expenditure (Ainsworth et al., 2000). Recently, it has been argued that prolonged sedentary behaviour which combined with a lack of physical activity through exercise is factor with adverse public health outcomes such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and increased mortality. (Chau et al., 2013;Owen et al. 2008; Owen et al. 2010; Uffelenet et al., 2013).

...ny friends that maintain a primary focus on exercise and health in their life. My goal is to reach out to them and have that additional motivation to do what is right for me. Having a friend will not only help me be responsible for my actions but can also improve my mood knowing that I have another person whose life is touched by my company. I think the biggest barrier to this issue is finding a time that will work for us both, but at the same time I don’t have to be dedicated to just one workout partner. By building my support system I will be able to conquer any problem in my life.
