The generation-defining, classic movie The Graduate was released in 1967 and directed by Mike Nichols. The movie stars Dustin Hoffman, as Benjamin Braddock, in his first and markedly most iconic role in a motion picture. The picture also stars Ann Bancroft as the unforgettable Mrs. Robinson and Katharine Ross as the charming daughter of Mrs. Robinson, Elaine Robinson. In this movie, it stars a recent college graduate who is struggling with the uncertainty of his future as he finds himself in a string of complicated romantic relationships. During this movie, our main character experiences what is the overall theme of this movie and that is the impulsivity and over-riding power of love. When I was watching this movie, I was at my parent’s house for Thanksgiving break and I asked my dad, who was around the age of the main character when this movie came out, if he had seen it and what his reaction to it was. He said that he considered the movie to be one that defined his generation and spoke to a lot of people. It dealt with the issues that many students were facing and are still facing today. Those issues are uncertainty of the future and most of all the chaotic world of love and romance.
Another thing that my dad mentioned was the rise of the iconic movie star Dustin Hoffman. The Graduate was his first major role and, in this movie, his portrayal of Benjamin as the well-meaning and slightly nervous young man with a tenacious spirit, who is not classically handsome but for whom you hope gets the girl in the end was one that jump-started his career. This became what Dustin Hoffman is now known for in his acting career, playing the charming yet flawed
