Before this class I had presented in front of classrooms in high school before and had experience delivering speeches in public. Yet I am still nervous and uncomfortable standing in front of people presenting. Through this class and the speeches, we delivered I gained more experience with public speaking. I am still not fully comfortable with presenting in public, I think I may need take more practice and experience, but I believe I did improve over the course of this semester. My first speech of the three surrounding our passion topic went smoothly, though I was nervous. Some of the comments were to slow down and pause for emphasis, to not sway or fidget so much and to stand up straighter. I was told that my eye contact was strong and I spoke clearly. I received similar comments on the second speech, again I needed to slow down. I also had a powerpoint for the second speech. I think this would have been easier if I had chosen a different topic. After hearing that our three speeches would all be surrounding one subject, our passion, I left class and scratched my brain for what I was passionate about. This proved to be more stressful than was probably necessary. I chose photography, though looking back on the semester now, I wish I had chosen a topic I was more interested in. I found the persuasive speech to be the most difficult to write. I think that it is easier to persuade the audience if you are passionate about the issue. I think that its important to be aware of Photoshop and it’s uses and consequences but I am not passionate about that subject. I found myself searching for a persuasive topic when it would have been easier to persuade if I was more invested in my topic. All in all, it would have been more productive if I had used a topic that I cared more
Perhaps, also wondering if it actually will be informative for an individual can be something very intimidating. Kevin chose to talk about the World cup, something that has never brought much entertainment to me. The way that Kevin was talking, with so much passion shown to his audience caught my attention, not to mention the humor he used along with it. Presenting a speech to the class is as if one was having an ongoing conversation with strangers and letting them know why the topic brings so much interest to you. During my demonstration speech, I was affected by my speech anxiety. Some of the viewable symptoms were the shaking of my hands and also the stuttering of speech. I was able to control myself and relax after I started getting into my information. I did use some of the suggested relaxation techniques to relieve my anxiety. Before I got up to speak I thought confident of myself to help give me courage and confidence.
Public speaking is a topic that most people dread. The anxious feeling of getting in front of people and presenting is avoided by many people at all costs. Although public speaking has a bad reputation, when done right, it can be a very valuable skill to have. Recently, I attended a presentation that was given by Ann Walker, a member of the National Alliance for Mental Health (NAMI). This presentation was focused on making more people aware about mental illnesses and the effects of them, which was using the method of an Informative Speech. As said in it’s name, the purpose of this kind of presentation is to “Increase your audience’s knowledge of a particular topic or teach them something new” (Hosek & Crawford, 2016, p. 74), which is stated in our student guidebook. It was held in a very casual setting, consisting of a college classroom holding about 50 seats. Before Walker started presenting her speech, she asked the audience what most of us were majoring in.
Although I did not necessarily enjoy the presentation aspects of this class, I definitely feel like I have improved as a presenter throughout the course of this class. The first presentation was pretty nerve-wrecking, which is my normal response whenever I have to present in front of people. With each presentation I have felt myself become more comfortable in front of people, less dependent on my notes, and just more confident in general. Even though I doubt public speaking will ever be one of my strong suits, I have become much more at ease with presenting and speaking in front of other people. Especially for the presentations in this class, it was reassuring to know that I was the person who was—in theory—an expert in my topic and most people were hearing this information for the first time, which eased a lot of the pressure when it came to
I believe that, if I feel nervous in the future, I will not be afraid of this emotion like what I did before. This course provided me knowledge on how to make me relax. Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. Thus, I am proud to say that I have fullfilled the course objectives and enhanced my public speaking
After re-watching my persuasive presentation a few times I was able to effectively critique myself, and what I found was that there were some things that I did well and some things that I did not do well that I did not even notice I was doing during the presentation itself. Although I was happy with how my speech turned out there were multiple aspects such as my introduction, conclusion, deliver, and a few other minor things that could have been improved upon.
My public speaking class has already enhanced my knowledge and my ability to give speeches greatly. I know that with time and experience in public speaking, I will become a more skilled and professional public speaker. I will be sharing my first thoughts about my public speaking class, my strengths and weaknesses as a speaker, the speech I am most proud of so far, the speech that was the most difficult so far, and areas I know I need to improve on in order to be a skilled public speaker. Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. At first I thought I would never make it to be a motivational speaker. However, this class has really altered the perception and understanding about me as a public speaker. It has enabled me discover the potential I had in this field. At the commencement of my classes in public speaking, I thought I would be a boring public speaker, less convincing, less persuasive and would freak out if asked to offer an impromptu speech. But it has come to my light that in fact this is the field where I would want to pursue my career in, it is the field that my dream lies in. I realized that I could make excellent speeches, entertain my audience and always keep them eager to expect my next words.
