Math Autobiography
This class is valuable to my education for a couple of reasons, first and foremost, it is satisfying my degree requirement. As we know it is important to complete those required courses with any given opportunity during an academic year; while my course load will be challenging, but I was very proud of me being able to add this class. The second reason is that I love mathematics and very passionate about it. I have taken advanced math in High School, for a while I considered majoring in Mathematics, but I changed my mind when as I became more aware of where I feel I can be most helpful to my community. Furthermore, this course will help me manage the semester by balancing my work load so that I may be able to reach my goal in a less stressful manner. Given that I like mathematics, it is only right that I know the origination of math's by how it came to be, the role it played in ancient time as well as its value in today's society. I must add that I grew up with three brothers who really like dealing with numbers, they are passionate and always want to base their career with something related to numbers. Growing up with has had a major impact on my admiration for the subject.
I also like this subject because I was surrounded by family members who can help me with areas that I needed help. I recalled there were times I desperately needed help and went to my brothers they never give me a direct answer instead they would give me clues that would eventually lead me to the correct pathway to solve the problem. As a result, their clever ways of punishing me has helped me to be more analytical and simplistic when doing my math homework. Mathematics will always be a part of my life, it helped me establish my reputation as a good student and hope it will always be a part of me. In High school I participated in the competition for Rockland, I was very please with my accomplishment. I took second place in the Ramapo School District and placed first for my school. As a result, I received a math rewards during which was extremely helpful. I was absolutely overjoyed to have represented my school and be the first student in my school who actually take a math trophy. I am very much looking forward to this class.
My best (and favorite) subject in school is Math. Ever since I was very little I have loved math, and worked very hard at it. When I do not fully understand topics I do extra problems to make sure that they become clear to me. I spend a lot of time working on math to make sure I understand the topics throughly. I have been in math clubs since 4th grade, and in 7th grade I represented my school at the MathCounts® competition where I won a two silver pins. I won the Virginia State Math Award in 7th grade, and this year I got an 800 in math on my SSAT. As a result of my hard work I am currently one of three students in my school to be in the highest math group, Precalculus.
I also learned that mathematics was more than merely an intellectual activity: it was a necessary tool for getting a grip on all sorts of problems in science and engineering. Without mathematics there is no progress. However, mathematics could also show its nasty face during periods in which problems that seemed so simple at first sight refused to be solved for a long time. Every math student will recognize these periods of frustration and helplessness.
Originally, I was born in Afghanistan in 1994. Shortly after the Taliban took over the country which forced my family to flee the country into Pakistan. From my schooling, I had immense interest in Mathematics and thus I chose Mathematics and Science at my intermediate level. My school was the place at which I gained deep knowledge in the fundamentals of Maths and Science. What has surprised me the most is that I do not feel that I have been seeking out these relationships between math and other areas of my life, rather the connections just seem more visible to me now that I have a greater appreciation and understanding for the subject. Prior to my arrival in the United States, the only common language I shared with my classmates and teachers in middle school was mathematics. I wasn’t obligated to speak English to understand what my teacher was teaching; all I had to do was stay engaged and gaze at the numbers on the board and make the connections. One of the things I love about math was that it is consistent and logical. No matter how hard the puzzle gets, the pieces fit perfectly together. My biggest accomplishment in middle school was passing the OAKS math test (Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills). The OAKS test assesses your abilities in english, reading, and math.Although I didn’t pass the reading and writing portion of the exam, I scored above average in the math section, which advanced me and a few other of my classmates into geometry when we enter High School.
As a secondary subject, society often views mathematics a critical subject for students to learn in order to be successful. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.
I really liked brushing up on my math skills and learning more that will benefit my long and short term goals. I really think the last three weeks of class in problem solving, financing, and statistic will help me in my future. I am now confident in my capability to solve word problems or even the math problems I face every day. I feel like I am going to be able to solve any problem with a logical answer. I have an understanding on how financing works and how much interest stacks ups on loans. I know technical terms, like compounding interest, to help me start a retirement or savings account. I never received any math training outside of school. In grade 3, my math project astonished teacher beyond expectations.
