Reflection Of Education: My Experiences In Elementary School

I was told to write about the experiences in elementary school when I learned about race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. When I think of my childhood it is not clear, there is a lot of things I have forgotten with time. Although I do not remember much I believe that Rolling Terrace Elementary is the best school I have attended because of the good times I do recall. During these years I thought that I went to a school where all of the students were the same and everyone got along great. When my mother was raising me she was a single mom of three children, working a nine to five job, and living in a small two-bedroom apartment. My mother bought her children what she could afford to give them and we were grateful for anything we received whether it was trending or not. The kids I saw at school were always wearing the latest styles because they had the opportunity to have the money to do so. There was a day when I was sitting in history class and I was unable to pay attention because there was a boy in the back of the class that would not stop talking. When I turned to ask him to be quiet he said “Don’t bother speaking to me when you are wearing those”. I looked down and realized he was talking about my shoes. “It doesn’t matter what is on my feet, at least they are covered and I do not have to walk around barefoot” I said to him. The class laughed at me and the teacher carried on with his lesson. Why was it okay for students to laugh at a child because of what they do or do not have? Laughing at a child about their choice in clothing is not any different from laughing at a starving child who cannot afford food. I think this goes into what the world views as being socially acceptable.
