Cultural Self-Exploration
When living in a culturally diverse world is important to know where one’s family history lies. Personally, I am from a very strong German heritage that throughout the years has adapted to contain Americanized characteristics. Traditional holidays such as Oktoberfest, Christmas, and Easter remain highly celebrated within my family. On these holidays we get together and celebrate with a family meal and time spent appreciating one another’s company. On these holidays we usually eat Kraut Krugen’s a food native to Germany. Kraut Krugen’s are usually a dish made as a family on special occasions and consist of a mixture of hamburger and sour kraut stuffed inside a bread dough then baked until golden perfection. We usually sit in the living room and discuss how everything is going in our lives. The topics range from work, politics, news, and family struggles. In the German culture family is highly valued alongside punctuality, hard work, structure and privacy. Working hard for what you have is something that has been instilled in my collection of values from a young age. As I have grown up I have adopted the values of my culture and see the importance of being a punctual person. I am always at least 5 minutes early to work and feel the need to always be on time. I believe in having a schedule and keeping things structured so you follow through with your word and work hard to get things done in a timely and proper manner. One value that has been lost in time would be thriftiness. Economical management used to be highly prioritized in the German culture especially during the great depression but as time has moved on spending money wisely still remains important but is less emphasized. It is believed that if you work hard for what you have you can buy nice things as long as you can afford them and don’t flaunt your economical standing. My German values are very important to me and will be passed onto future
