Recommended: Wind energy
My senior project entailed determining the highest efficiency wind energy generation. Using the information collected during the research process, I created a small scale, as well as a large scale wind turbine to test the different flows of wind. The small scale wind turbine measures 9 inches high and is 1/600 of a commercial wind turbine. The larger turbine is eight feet high and has a span of three feet. The inspiration behind my project is environmental engineering and sustainability. I have had many opportunities throughout high school such as a summer internship and robotics club, that have influenced my senior project product’s design and aesthetic. The final result of product is exceptionally better than I expected because of the time, research, and effort I put into creating something with the capability of …show more content…
creating energy with simplistic design and control mechanism. When starting the project I felt that I would not have enough time to create two very different wind turbines, and be able to test their capabilities in varying wind speeds. I am highly satisfied with all the work I put into my project, and the outcome of the two turbines, because they represent my passion for engineering and knowledge. While working on the project, I have gained many skills regarding engineering and mechanics.
I have learned how to use many power tools, and I have learned how to use the mathematical equations behind the laws that make it possible for wind turbines to produce useable energy. My mentor and my father worked with me and taught me how to use a wind tunnel, drills, grinders, and many other tools. I also learned more about the engineering design process through creating the layout and construction of my wind turbines. By gaining many skills throughout the school year, I am better prepared for the an engineering major in college. By having the necessary skills for an engineering major, I will be more prepared for my college because I will have a greater amount of prior knowledge that will be relevant for classes. The knowledge that I have gained over the past months of school is not only pivotal in the progression of educational path, but also my potential career. I plan to become an environmental engineer, and I will need to know how to power tools, how to wire simple machines, and also how to use mathematics to determine problems and enact
solutions. Even though I did an prodigious amount of research on wind turbines and the effects of fluid dynamics, my product can still be improved in multiple ways. For example, the hub that connects the blades to the motor constantly loosens. This causes the blades to wobble, which decreases the energy efficiency of the turbine. Also, the bearing that allows the wind turbine’s blades and motor to turn to align correctly, is very tight and it requires a large amount of wind to change the directional orientation of the blades. As I continue to gain knowledge and expand my skills, I will have the ability to increase the complexity of the design. I plan to review my project in the future, and possibly redesign the turbine to have a higher energy efficiency under a greater load. I would want to recreate this project because I believe that there is greater possibilities for what can be done with small scale wind turbines. This project has influenced my educational decisions, and I believe that it has been a great opportunity for me to immerse myself into a field of study. The design and construction process of the wind turbine was tedious; however, the final product displays the amount of time and effort put into it.
Robert Leamnson’s essay “Learning (Your First Job)” effectively proposes the importance of learning by suggesting ways of making notes, studying, and doing assignments. Leamnson cannot stress it enough, how learning will not be accomplished unless you want to do it. If you do not have the want of learning then there is no point in doing it. High school education is so much different than your post-secondary education. The material that is being learned in the college classes is materials that will be useful for your later career. This essay has given me a better understanding of to how and why I should take college classes
When I was planning my senior project I knew I wanted to make something I could keep and use for myself but I wasn’t quite sure who would be my mentor. Then I thought it would be special to do something like this with my grandpa who is now 84 years old and has 40+ years of experience with construction. He even built his home that he and my grandmother are living in today, in 1954. My grandpa started making canes for himself, to donate and just for fun and I thought it will be cool to make myself a cane and customize it with designs. Before starting my project, I had no previous knowledge of working with wood or heavy machinery. The only time I worked with wood was hammering a nail into a wooden wall. Now after I have completed my project, I know how to stain and varnish wood, use a table saw, stationary sander, wood burner and a drill press machine.
Students engage in experimental learning and activities that take ideas to help solve real-life problems. Taking the basic classes allow college grads to be better critical thinkers and problem solvers.

College helps further your life preparedness and helps your decision making skills. While studying at college, one gains the knowledge, one gains the knowledge of, “...continual learning, for making decisions in one’s life, and for making a difference in the world.”(Source B) An important aspect of your life is how you handle the choices you are given and continue to do. College education helps you sharpen your decision making skills and how to challenge the hardships thrown at you.
From an early age I was aware that teachers treated students differently based on race, ethnicity, class, and gender. From K-12, I attended racially, ethnically, and economically diverse public schools. Some of my classmates’ parents had Ivy League educations and others were had little education. Interestingly, among my classmates, there were both educated people and uneducated people on welfare. The teachers’ prejudices were always clear though; the upper-class, white, blonde-haired kids were the favorites, and the children of color were always the ones in trouble. There were only two Black teachers in my elementary school—and they were not regular classroom teachers; one was in the resource room and the other was in guidance. In sixth grade
Overall, I believe that this course has enhanced my writing. Previously, I never added an element of first person in my formal essays. I believe it was because in high school there was a bad connotation with it, but now I’ve learned that adding my own opinion enhances my essay and makes it more interesting and elaborate. I think it’s really useful to incorporate my own opinion throughout my essay to make it more personable and relatable. I’ve also found that the They Say, I Say book has helped me a lot in terms of structuring and formatting my thesis statements and topic sentences. This has majorly improved my writing and has allowed me to be more clear and concise with my ideas. Before, I always struggled with writing my thesis and topic sentences
For my senior project, I researched the positive effects of using video games on the minds and bodies of many types of people. I confirmed my belief that they can be useful as teaching tools and as teachers, depending on the situation. According to further studies, they can also improve a child’s emotional state and help improve the therapy experience for required trainees, like asthmatic children. My mentor was Elliot Huffman, creator and founder of Elliot Labs. He works from home, so I shadowed him there and saw what sort of work he did for his numerous clients, such as website and server setup.
On the first day of college; my teachers said to me; Study hard and you 'll get a degree. The Course 's Enduring Understanding (EU) is ideas, habits, and general comprehension of what students should know or will soon find out. Over the course of my first semester I learned ideas such as studying, sceduding, and trying to fit all that into one week and 5 classes. I also learned habits such as reading, thinking, listening, presenting. We used all of those skills in the course of the whole semester and it kind of got me read for what the other courses where going to bring.
When I arrived at Yale during the fall of 2009 for my freshman year, I started my undergraduate career wanting to practice medicine. Also, I wanted to receive a well-rounded education in an array of subjects. To this day, the education I received at Yale inspires me to delve deeper into pressing issues within our society and utilize the information that comes from a diverse knowledge capital to create strategies and make informed decisions.
The outcome of a higher education will bring the success you were seeking, find your interests, navigate you to diverse opportunities, and even improve your critical thinking on daily routines. College teaches you all the rudimentary skills such as problem solving, communication, critical thinking, or even self- motivation. Knowing these skills properly, you’ll have a quicker reaction on how to deal with unexpected situation. For me, college will guide me to a successful future, increase my opportunities in life, improve my daily skills, and teach me to become more aware on situations. Most of all, college will help me influence other family members to attend by showing them how successful one can become with a higher
Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving. Banking on an excellent academic record coupled with a keen interest in the ever-growing field of science and technology motivated me to take up engineering.
...rks. In a word, the MA experience was considered to be a bridge that combines the student learning with working skills, it would be of great help for my future career.
Throughout this term, my fellow classmates and I have had a chance to participate in a group project with two or three of our peers. The general topic was a vivid problem in a industry. Our class had a very wide and diverse sets of topics: from Styrofoam, to industrial hacking, to corruption in an influential international organization like FIFA, and so many more. Our group decided to develop a project named “Outsourcing and the price we pay for brands”. The name itselves is somewhat self-explanatory, however the problem is so much more complicated and interesting. In this paper, many struggles and concerns, of the group and of my my own, will be unfolded as I reflect the progress of this project.
The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience.
