Reflection Paper
After a summer internship at a news station that was in direct correlation with my declared undergraduate major, I am anxious to begin focusing my work and study toward higher education student affairs. My experience this summer forced me to do some self-evaluation and assessment as far as my strengths, weaknesses, and what kind of environment I envision myself thriving in. My vision for my career is ever developing.
Fitting into my profession
Like so many students at Southern Miss, I was inspired by mentors like Dr. Joseph Paul who convinced me that I could do great and be great things for this university. That encouragement made me want to seek out my passion and my niche. I have found that passion or “fit” in changing the conversation around choosing between a university and a junior college, Greek Life, sexual assault awareness, and bystander intervention education.
My passions lead my way of thinking about higher education and display what I will bring to the table in my profession. My cultural experiences ignited and now drive these passions, so I know that my focuses will be different than many coworkers. They

I believe this will be easy as the assignments required, such as, the weekly reflections as well as the larger self-assessment paper, require a large amount of personal development and reflection. Another element of my own self-reflection will be to upkeep my blog. I plan to theme my blog posts around what we discuss in class and delve deeper into the discussions I present in class as well as in my weekly reflections through these posts. When a person presently looks at university school systems, one never imagines the struggle to obtain such diverse campuses. With Caucasians, Asians, Latinos, and African Americans all willing and able to attend any institution, it is difficult now to envision a world where, because of one’s skin color, a person is denied university acceptance. In actuality, this world existed only fifty years ago. In a time of extreme racial discrimination, African Americans fought and struggled toward one of many goals: to integrate schools. As a pioneer in the South, a man named James Meredith took a courageous step by applying to the University of Mississippi, an all white university. After overcoming many legal and social obstacles, the University of Mississippi’s integration sent positive effects rippling among universities across the nation.

My passions have impacted me in such a positive way it's the reason why I’m alive today. The passions that have influenced my life are music, family and religion. You may ask yourself why? In all honesty, the past three years I had to cope with two of toughest situations I ever encountered. Losing my mother to cancer and rupturing my disc on my lower back, leaving me immobilized for months. Nevertheless, my passions help me leverage the agony and has kept me disciplined. As well as learning never to give up in any position your left with and to embrace the battle so you can prosper. For example, like Bertand Russell discusses in his essay, “Three Passions I have lived for,” I, too, live for my passions.
The ability to reflect critically on one’s experience, integrate knowledge gained from experience with knowledge possessed, and take action on insights is considered by some adult educators to be a distinguishing feature of the adult learner (Brookfield 1998; Ecclestone 1996; Mezirow 1991). Critical reflection is the process by which adults identify the assumptions governing their actions, locate the historical and cultural origins of the assumptions, question the meaning of the assumptions, and develop alternative ways of acting (Cranton 1996). Brookfield (1995) adds that part of the critical reflective process is to challenge the prevailing social, political, cultural, or professional ways of acting. Through the process of critical reflection, adults come to interpret and create new knowledge and actions from their ordinary and sometimes extraordinary experiences. Critical reflection blends learning through experience with theoretical and technical learning to form new knowledge constructions and new behaviors or insights.

The lived experience of managing for results in social services among key professionals emerged from summarizing and reflecting on the naïve reading, the sub-themes, and themes, all meaning that managing for results in social services mimic the experience of putting a jigsaw puzzle together where each piece has its own special place, but the puzzle can´t be fulfilled since those who put together the puzzle not pre-agreed on which the puzzle is to be pieced together those puzzles do not agree on which the puzzle is to be pieced together. Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
High impact practices are important to the development and engagement of students (Kilgo et al, 2014). Two high impact practices that have a positive impact on students are collaborative learning and undergraduate research (Kilgo et al, 2014). I think the high impact practices will give student affairs professional different methods and opportunities to help develop and support students through their college career. Student affairs professionals are going to have to learn how to participate to high impact practices and find ways to motivate students to do them (Schuh et al, 2011). Without a doubt the lessons and exercises on time management were the most meaningful to me. They brought insight into why I seemed to be constantly working yet still never really got anything I wanted to accomplish throughout the day finished. I realized the majority of the activities I had been spending the most time on didn’t reflect my values of hard work and self discipline and long term academic goals to be successful in college. This motivated to completely change the way I managed my time by effectively striking a balance between my maintenance, committed, and free time.
In the college success strategies (COLL 101) class, we had explored various areas of future possibility. Throughout the quarter, We sketched out the big pictures of the future. We identified potential destination and explored the path to get there. In this reflection essay, I would like to talk about and reflect on personal development throughout the quarter.
Passion for Family, Community, Business, Technology and Intellectual growth are what motivate me on the daily basis. These are vital parts that have contributed to framing me into the person I’ve become. They have also shaped my short-term and long-term goals in life. There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann.
