Going into English 1301, I expected the class to be difficult but also a substantial learning experience. Not only have I found connections within each of the essays I have written, but additionally have become more engaged in critical thinking and collaborative work. Within the syllabus, we were given concepts that we ,as students, needed to meet by the end of the course. I have met the student learning outcomes throughout this course as shown through all three essays. The first student outcome stated that “Students will be able to use rhetorical terminology to describe writing.” For example, for our first essay we were assigned, we had to analyze an argumentative essay and discuss the rhetorical strategies the author used to convince their …show more content…
Also, we read a chapter out of our textbook that discussed how important it is to understand the severity of plagiarism. To show that I understand plagiarism, in my third essay I stated, “To add, according to an article discussing the placing of a child into a racially different home, the author states, ‘Silverman and Feigelman report that maladjustment in transracially adopted children is due primarily to their age at placement rather than racial differences’ (Forde-Mazrui).” (Adopting). The next student outcome in the syllabus states, “Students will be able to interpret texts written for academic audiences.” I was successfully able to read and fully understand the texts I read and answer questions based on my comprehension and interpretation of what the author(s) was trying to portray. Not only did we interpret texts out of a textbook, but we had to analyze articles we found off databases or websites to include in our writing. In all three of our essays we included quotes or information we located in those other sources that we had dissected in order to add more depth to each of our pieces of writing. Interpreting texts is something I have grew stronger in and will continue to use the techniques I have learned in my future high school and college
English 1302 has been a valuable learning experience. It has helped me improve my writing skills and build an outline for my writing assignments. Also, it has allowed me to gain more confidence in my writing by being able to develop and express my ideas more clearly. If I could continue with this course, I would. The literature review was an assignment that allowed me to correct a lot of my writing mistakes, such as not having a proper outline to follow, and word choice. For example, on my first literature review draft one of my topic sentences reads “Stem cells have brought hope to cancer patients….” transformed into “Research has shown that stem cells have brought hope to cancer patients....”The first year writing textbook helped me alot in completing most of my assignments. In the beginning of this semester, English 1302 seemed as though it would be the subject that would be the toughest for me to pass. The pace, the work load and everything in between seemed overwhelming for me. As time proceeded to pass, the course didn’t seem as overpowering. By taking the work one step at a time, it simply became another step to achieve the overall goal of this first half of the semester. I have made improvements as well as learned lessons from my mistakes made along the way.
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
In this English course for the past semester, I have learned many new forms of essays and many new techniques. There was much more conversation with my classmates this year and I believe that lead me to a better class experience and grade. The essays have also taught me many new skills that can help me in the future. The rhetorical analysis, Causal Argument, and Proposal essay have taught me many new writing techniques and the advantages of peer review.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
I should receive a passing grade in this class because I can write now. Not just an exaggeration, but after another semester of English I finally feel confident that can write. Three of the reasons behind my confidence is I learned, I experienced and best of all I repeated. These three values helped prepare me for what is in store in English 1302 and here is why.
Before I came to UNCP, I went to a school called High Point Central (HPC). We were labeled as one of the poorest schools in the state because we sat in the Guilford County Public School System. At HPC I had a teacher named Mrs. Gilmore she was the first real English teacher that really taught us how to write. I went into the class with my “9th Grade writing” (as she would call it) as a Jr. it was the first experience I had ever gotten a horrible grade on my writing. The very first thing she told us was that “If you do not know how to write in MLA you are not going to make it past 2nd semester in college.” This struck me in a way that I knew I had to get my writing together, the last day in her class of my senior year she told me to watch
I spent four years of my life in rural Plymouth, NH, surrounded by trees, wildlife, and white people. My private boarding high school was a drastic change from growing up in the Bronx, NY. It was quiet. At times the silence was peaceful but it was also a reminder that I was far from home. There wasn’t any public transportation; people had to use cars to travel. At night, the sky lit up with hundreds of beautiful bright stars; a rare sight in the city. Almost every faculty member that lived on campus either had a new born baby, dog or both. The majority of the faculty was white heterosexual males though there were women as well, but none of which were of color. Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
Composition 1101 has helped to improve my reading, writing, and learning skills, but this class has also taught me things that I have never learned before. The class is preparing you to write at a college level by practicing rhetorical knowledge, how to read and write critically, the steps in composing an essay, understanding conventions, and how writing technologies can help finalize your paper. The one thing that this class taught me is how to use our school's online library database to find a peer-reviewed article on the subject I am writing about. This year I have improved my writing skills and will continue to improve my writing in the different areas described below. At the beginning of the year, I felt if I created a good social group, I would feel comfortable at Marquette which would provide an environment in which I would be more likely to succeed academically. Unfortunately, this was where I made my biggest mistake- I did not correctly manage my social activities and student responsibilities. Instead of balancing the two, I prioritized my social life, which led to my current academic situation. Along with my poor study schedule, my sleep schedule was also lacking. Like many college students, I stayed up late socializing and doing last minute homework instead of getting adequate sleep for my early classes. The first time I ever picked up the Bible I remember reading about Adam and Eve. They were the first humans ever created by God. They were in nature “pure”. God told Adam before Eve was created that he was not to eat of the tree of good and evil. After that, God warned that in the day he did eat of that tree man would surely die. After Eve was created Satan changed into a serpent to tempt her. He told her that God had lied to her. He said that she wouldn't die, in fact, she would become like God. She would know everything, just as God does. Eve allowed herself to be deceived. After she took that bite she sealed the fate of all mankind. However we were not doomed yet. Even after being kicked out of the garden we still had God on our side. He gave us Jesus Christ. Who went through so much pain and torment in order to save us for the mistake Adam and Eve made. I know so much pain and suffering in the world and I wonder where it originated. How do I escape from the sin of the world and be safe. The answer came in the healing and powerful words of the bible. My pastor read me my favorite scripture of the bible a long time ago. I will never forget it. “And the LORD God said, [It is] not good that the man should be alone; I will make him and help meet for him.” (Genesis; chapter two). I wondered was alone in my struggle. I had figured that I would be fighting alone. God would never leave or forsake us. I learned this the hard way.
I wish I could write my younger self a letter. I want to tell her all the amazing things that will happen in college and not to be so worried, but I also want to tell her the bad things that happen. I know time travel does not exist, so I cannot, and young me would be mad at current me for spoiling stuff. Instead I write this reflection on what I think have been important lessons I learned from my first semester of college.
