My first semester at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has been everything that I expected it to be. I knew it would be strenuous to move to a new city totally different from what I had grown up in. I also know that this would put a strain on making new friends, keeping up with my social life, maintaining a healthy mental and physical and healthy lifestyle, and achieving my goals - nonetheless, I have managed to do all of these things and have a splendid time doing so. My main goals were to make it on the dean’s list, join a church and a Christian organization, make new friends, and volunteer often. I took five classes this semester-psychology of adjustment(PSYC 2150), intro to statistics (STAT 1222), western history and culture (LBST 2101), college transition (UCOL 1000) and the science and practice of psychology (PSYC 1000). My initial goal was to make an A in each class, except intro to statistics. However, after the first exam in psychology of adjustment and did some calculations and became awake of the fact that I could still make a 3.6 GPA if I made a B in two classes. I am now striving to make an A in UCOL 1000, PSYC 1000, and LBST 2101 and a B in PSYC 2150 and STAT 1222. Summer term 2016 was the very first time I was considered a college student who attended Florida International University or any university for that matter. I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
The atmosphere of my university is not at all the way I expected it to be while I was in high school. At USC, the education is fantastic! I have never learned so many things in such a short period of time. I probably learned more things in one semester than most of my years in high school. I am in the pre-medical field.
Going into this course, I felt that the reading and writing skills I learned in high school were very beneficial in preparing me for an English college course. In high school, I was enrolled in GATE and AP English courses. In these classes, I was assigned several readings and was taught to actively read by doing annotations. I was to summarize the writer 's main points, to write down my own opinions, or to connect it to any personal experiences. These annotations helped me understand the writer 's message better because I was able to break down the things the writer said and only focused on the important points. Then, I was also able to form my own opinion on that topic by deciding whether I agreed or disagreed with the author’s opinion. Moreover, I used evidence from the text to support my argument.

My ultimate goal of becoming a Physician Assistant has only strengthened since coming to Valparaiso University. Although I have achieved my goal of being accepted into a 5-year accelerated program, I have not stopped setting more goals. During my first semester I set a goal to finish with a 3.7 GPA and I finished with a 3.75. I set a goal for myself, which was to improve my overall GPA each quarter. Slowly, but surely, I was getting better grades and boosting my GPA. Junior year was my best year academically. I set more academic goals for myself. I stayed on top of my work and in the end it paid off because I was able to exceed my goal. My GPA has increased vastly since the start of freshman year, but I silently thought to myself: “If I’ve made it this far academically, why not end high school with an even greater GPA?” I know I have the potential to increase my cumulative GPA to a 3.5, and I am currently striving to achieve this goal with high hopes. The first week or so after moving into your new territory, be it a dorm or apartment, you realize how uneasy it feels to be away from the familiarities of your life before the move. You start to miss the little things. You wish that the ceiling fan made the same rattling noise that your fan at home made. You wish you were able to here the crickets outside at night instead of noisy neighbors or roommates. It doesn’t as seem perfect being in college as it did in your imagination.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
I have always considered myself to be a type A person and academically gifted. I have striven to be the best I can be. When I began attending at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, I set a goal for myself. I wanted to obtain a 4.0 GPA while being in the honors program. The end of the semester has arrived and with it comes time for reflection. This semester has had many ups and downs. However, one thing is for sure: it was a fantastic first semester of college.
Living up to my resolution, I joined several clubs, both in and out of school and academic and recreational. I also met some of my very best friends in high school. Achieving all of this, friends, memberships to academic clubs and good grades, made up my first successful experience in high school.
