Entering English Comp one, I had fears of what the class would be like. I realized that I had many weaknesses, but it was not till the end of the class that I learned my strengths. When I first entered Comp one I was very nervous. Everyone had told me that Mrs. Garth was a really tough teacher, therefore; that kinda made me second guess my opinion to take the class. When we started writing I learned that my main weakness was getting my point across while staying on topic. I have always struggled with writing, so when I took this class I knew I would have to improve on my writing. When we wrote our first essay in the class, I knew it was terrible. I was very nervous about turning in the paper because I knew that I could have done better but I was not sure how to get my point across and my paper still make sense. Luckily for me, Mrs. Garth was very tough but then again she was very lenient on us. She would always help us correct our papers, she would always give us feedback, and she would help us find our weaknesses. Eventually, I got to where I could finally write an effective paper …show more content…
In the past we never had to write a research paper the way Mrs. Garth asked us to. My teachers in the past have always just gave us the research and then we wrote our paper on the research they gave us. When we made it to Comp Mrs. Garth expected us to know how to write an effective research paper. She just gave us our topics and told us to find the research for our topics. Little did she know that she would be walking around helping just about every student, try to find research. She finally realized that we was confused and she had to waste a few days of class time to teach us how to properly find research. Looking back at my very first research paper, I am ashamed to say that I wrote it. The research paper was full of mistakes, ranging from just everyday mistakes to not citing my writing the right
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. Again, the journey was long, but I will be forever grateful for the things that I, and all of my peers have gained from this
The first day of my junior year I was extremely overwhelmed by this class; all the essays we were required to write in the first week didn't help much either. However, since the beginning of the year I have learned so many useful and important lessons which have guided my learning throughout this first semester and, I'm assuming, will continue to guide me for the rest of my high school experience and beyond. In addition, I have made many goals which pertain to essays I have written, and I believe I have met those goals.
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
My sixteen week class in English 111. I was really nervous about this class. Because English has never been my strong point. This class has hard, but fun all at the same time. I learn a lot from this class. Meanwhile, the first day of class you handed a paper with a question on it. “The first thing I want to say to you who are students is that you must not think of being here to receive an education; instead, you will do much better to think of being here to claim one.” Even though putting my all in what I have learned, claiming my education with hard work because using the skills of the meal plan, as we write to different audiences and learning to be a Critically thinker as I start becoming a critically-Literate Citizenship.
In the course of this semester of writing, I grew more than I ever had in my ability to write well. I remember on the first day of class several other students were talking about how hard this writing professor is. I was a bit worried and even thought about switching to an easy professor for a guarantee A so I can get a 4.0. Now, I am grateful that I chose to decide to work hard for a 4.0 instead. Even though I may not get it, I am still glad I stayed because for once, I learned and became a better writer. I can see that my knowledge of conventions definitely improved from last semester. I really loved the feedback for my assignments, since it allows me to realize what I need to improve on and what I should keep doing. Unlike the previous semester, the writing professor only told us our grade on the very first assignment after two months. There were no feedback on how I could improve either, so I had no idea if I was having trouble with anything. Prior to this course, I always had trouble writing sentences and organizing them in such a way that flows and delivers my idea well. I also rarely outline or plan out how I will write a paper too, and even when I did, it was very vague. Out of the five learning outcomes, I grew the most in rhetoric knowledge and writing process from the reading responses and 4 assignment.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
This course was the first course I took as an incoming freshman, as anyone could imagine I was scared and nervous at the same time. Also since it is a writing course; I was hesitant if I wanted to continue in the class because writing is very challenging for me as an immigrant. Returning from summer break, I found it extremely tough to continue where I left off with my writing skills from high school. The fear of writing that my old high school teacher instilled in me did not help my writing anxiety either. In contrast, I found that the professor and the course were not at all intimidating as I assumed, the professor took time from his busy schedule to help his students to further improve their writing and the writing topics were very stimulating and thought provoking. Composition 1 has helped me learn more about myself and my writing skills, which allowed me to further self-evaluate myself, find where I need improvement and become motivated to change.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
As this semester is coming to an end I have written a lot of papers for Mrs. Nance. Some of them were very tough and others were a little bit easier for me whatever they were I got through them all even though some nights I did not think I would. The papers that were hard for me were a lot of the bigger papers and they were not hard just because they were long. On some assignments I could keep writing for days. It was the revising that was hard for me and especially in my Costa Rica memoir. I do not think I have ever worked that hard on a paper before, and in the end it was all worth it because I got a very good grade on it. It was challenging because I had to go back and try to find any spelling mistakes which took a lot of work because I
Overall, I believe that this course has enhanced my writing. Previously, I never added an element of first person in my formal essays. I believe it was because in high school there was a bad connotation with it, but now I’ve learned that adding my own opinion enhances my essay and makes it more interesting and elaborate. I think it’s really useful to incorporate my own opinion throughout my essay to make it more personable and relatable. I’ve also found that the They Say, I Say book has helped me a lot in terms of structuring and formatting my thesis statements and topic sentences. This has majorly improved my writing and has allowed me to be more clear and concise with my ideas. Before, I always struggled with writing my thesis and topic sentences
The first, and probably the thing that impacted my writing the most, was that I needed to be writing in eleven font, which was something I had never done before. Coming to the realization that writing in twelve font is a lot different than eleven font forced me to better manage my time, as it would take me a longer time to write, what used to be a quick, five page paper. The second thing that I learned from the first essay was that the grading was strict and that I actually needed to pay attention to the rubric, instead of just writing bull-shit to answer the topic of the paper that was assigned. Professor Mullen, after the first essay, informed us that she had an excellent “bull-shit detector”. After hearing this I realized that I would actually need to put effort and thought into my pieces of writing throughout the rest of the semester. The sense of the strict rubric grading put me into a position of stress and worry and I was thinking that I had finally been put into a position where I would be forced to out more effort into my writing; later I would find out that pushing through the hardships of writing the strictly graded papers, on topics I did not particularly, like would better myself as a student, not only in my writing class, but also in all other
I remember English class in high school and I thought it would be the same information so this class would just be a review and the hardest assignment would be to write a one page essay. I thought I could write any paper and make a A on it. As the time went by I realize this was not true. I started working on my attitude towards the class, what I learned and my weakness.
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
