I will introduce my writing experiences in two different views: the study processes of standard exams, such as TOEFL and SAT, and my native writing career. In the processing of preparing SAT writing exams, I faced several hardships which may not be solved well. Three years ago, I knew about the essay in English when I prepared my SAT writing exams which are definitely challenges for me at the very beginning. I tried to practice in regular way to write essays, which means that I wrote loads of examples supporting my views and then practiced so many times in using the same examples for multiple questions. In fact, I practiced more intellectually in the processing of preparing TOEFL exam. Specially Speaking, I analyzed the questions depending on not the examples I recite but interpretations that are more understandable and appropriate to my views. Lacking writing skills, relevant examples and the precise vocabulary for writing a convincing essay, I faced similar challenge that I cannot do well in limited time, as the first time I exercised for the exams based on English. For solving the problems, my writing teacher recommended me try to do some reading exercises before I write a whole essay. This way was really useful for me to enlarge the vocabulary and backlog writing materials, and I started to speed up my writing though I still can not pay attention to essay structures. In order to overcoming the chaotic structures in my essays, I persisted in reading more articles but they did not help me because of unselected readings. Concentrating on famous bookmaking, I used to believe that I can imitate these deliberate structures while they were not the suitable reading materials for me because I can not hold these flexible structures. I failed one more time. The real increase was appearing from reading more imitative articles which were written in a fixed structure with clearly explaining and my writings were amending by others. Dual Enrollment English was the first real college-level class I ever had. I actually have taken other college-level classes before it, but Dual Enrollment English was the only course that gave me an accurate representation of how college will really be like and what it will expect of me. My journey through Dual Enrollment English began with a sense of fear and self-defeat and ended with a sense of satisfaction and confidence with many highs and lows along the way. This portfolio catalogs the evolution of my writing during my two semesters in Dual Enrollment English including seven different types of papers as well as each of their respective drafts and tutor feedback.
Writing is a process I’ve grown to despise. Ever since grade school, I’ve had problems trying to express my ideas on paper. My writing process involves thinking about what’s being asked and trying to reflect my thoughts the best way I can on paper, but my thoughts don’t always come out as clear as I want them to be sometimes leaving a question not fully answered. My writing process isn’t a consistent set in stone process, but since being in ENC 1101 I always follow some of the same parameters such as revising my drafts, grammar usage and considering context and audience.
C. Wright Mills coined his idea, The Sociological Imagination, in 1959. The Sociological Imagination is a viewpoint from which our worldview is unknowingly filtered through a perspective gained from our daily encounters and situations. Each social interaction impacts other interactions, which, in turn, affects the society as a whole. According to C. Wright Mills, the sociological imagination is when an individual views his society as the potential cause for his daily successes and failures. Individuals often tend to view their personal issues as social problems and try to connect their individual experiences with the workings of society. Mills believes that this is the way for individuals to gain an understanding of their personal dilemmas. The sociological imagination helps people connect their own problems with public problems and their history. In order for an individual to figure out the causes of their problems, they first have to be able to understand the causes of the problems in the society in which they are living in. The sociological imagination tries to come up with causes for certain social trends and provides a structure for comprehending the social world. Having a sociological imagination is vital since it is important for individuals to have a way to relate their personal issues to the issues of society at large. Without the means to create these relations, one is incapable of seeing how societal issues affect them. (Mills, 1959)
C. Wright Mills theory of sociological imagination is the one sociological principle that has resonated with me more than any other theory in Sociology with Marxism being a close second. Even before taking any classes in the humanities or social science fields, I unknowingly used sociological imagination framework in my life on almost a daily basis. Since becoming aware of political matters in grade school through music, race and class, I began to critically analyze connections of public policies that affect my enviroment.
Writing skill is so essential to be owned by students in order to be successful in the academic domain in this era. The importance of the mastery of writing skill is also growing that is in line with a rise in the global interaction and the opportunity to study abroad in recent years. The increasing popularity of standardized test, e.g. TOEFL and IELTS as a prerequisite for getting into the university is a big reason for the interest to study and master writing skill.
Throughout this English 280 course I have learned many things about reading, writing, research, and critical thinking. I have also learned about what potentials I have as a writer and what I can improve when writing. In this process I had also encountered some difficulties when it came to writing. At the same time I also feel that the difficulties I encountered have made me improve from my first essay to my recent essay when it came to the genre, process of writing and the rhetorical language used when writing. Even though my progress was not at all constant I still was able to earned satisfactory grades and learn more with each assignment. I still feel that I need to improve my writing and reading because I will need to use it for future courses, life events and career.
Sociologist are invariably trying to decipher the social aspects of the environment around us. When examining these social phenomena, sociologist take a systematic approach in order to extract information. Typically, there are four questions that sociologist come to ask themselves: the empirical, theoretical, comparative, and developmental questions. C. Aptitude plays an important role in learning. If you have it, the job becomes simple. If you don’t, the final outcome is always doubtful. Some tasks, like playing a musical instrument, require a very high degree of aptitude. The average person would face great difficulty in learning such a vocation. Other, more mundane but crucial ones, like driving a car, cooking or writing can be learnt by most people with a reasonable level through training. English composition was never my choice subject and essay writing was not exactly the most joyful assignment at the high school but there were indicators that writing skills would play a crucial role in my future life, irrespective of which career I chose. Take, for example, Anthony Balderrama’s advice. “We spend more time writing in our professional and personal lives than we probably imagined we would back in school. What you may not realize is that these written exchanges can boost your career or hinder it, depending on how you treat them.”(Balderamma, 2009). Taking up Foundations of Academic Writing (FAW) I and II at the university was, therefore, a carefully thought out decision. The FAW syllabus tackles different aspects of academic writing in a systematic way. There is measured emphasis on different genres of academic writing, and there is lots of repetition. As a result, slowly but surely, change starts to happen. Now, as the course reaches the final stages, I can observe these changes in the quality of my writing and overall understanding of the subject. Writing an essay is no more the ordeal that it used to be in the high school.
Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
Throughout taking college courses I can say that I have experienced all types of writing experiences. I have taken many different types of courses, for example, philosophy, psychology, western civilization, Composition I, Composition II, and English 112. Even though it was writing papers in each course, I had to develop different techniques in each course. In my composition courses and in English courses, the course work was very similar within the types of writing I was assigned. Many of them included analyses, research, and drafting. You use the research and information you find about a certain topic and you develop a paper about it, but putting information from multiple sources into your paper. To conclude, the English Module Assessment benefited me in several ways. It taught me how I need to enhance as a writer, as well as what I have under my wing, my strengths. The future ahead of us is the bag that holds the accomplishments, the extent of faith, determination, dedication, and more crucially the abundance of assiduousness you put in your each action. Most of my classmates didn’t anticipate the scores in which they wanted, especially me. However, this isn’t the actual examination. With the results, you are able to know what you need to do on the next test. You want to exert, in which you put every drop of your one hundred ten percent effort. In high school, I was always a student that succeeded in all of my courses. I did, however, have some classes that I would better excel; English always being one of them. My teachers would always praise me for the way I used my critical thinking skills and for my excellent editing and revising techniques. Due to these reasons, I felt very confident when I first started taking the Foundations of Academic Writing (FAW) I course. I quickly learned the error in my way of thinking. FAW I and II taught me many different techniques and tools of writing that I never used before. Through this experience, I gained the capability of improving my writing, work on my strengths and weaknesses, and excel at my critical thinking techniques.
While writing the essay, I often struggle with the deeper meaning behind the reading that I have to write about. Most importantly, the biggest problem in the process of writing the essay is I often do not know how to combine my ideas and sentences together, which is the grammar error of sentence structure. As an ESL student, English is not my first language; as a result, no matter in writing or reading, I always have to pay more attention and efforts than the native students, especially in this class because it is all about literature. Additionally, I always struggle with the deeper meaning behind the reading; as a result, I will read them for several times and write down things that I want to talk about in the space. However, although I have write down all the main ideas, I always have a hard time to combine them together in the correct order. Meanwhile, I often can write down what I want to say in my own language and have the idea in the mind; nevertheless, I can not translate them directly into English, which makes me feel very depressive and
When I went to high school in Ethiopia, I never wrote an essay or paragraph. Therefore, when I start ESL class it was very hard time for me and I never thought that I will be improved my English like this. However, if not because of the help of my instructors today this essay would not be possible, I feel I can write decent essays with still some grammar mistakes. I spent a lot of hours on writing labs and homework help me a lot, even though at times I got tired and bored on homework. That helped me a lot and because of that now I feel confident when it comes on essay writing, I do not struggle like I used to before. However, I am still working hard and improving more every day. I have noticed that harder I work, I am getting better. This experience has showed me that when someone does not give up on the goals that want to achieve, anything is possible with some effort.
