Exploring the Fluidity of Personal Identity

Different people have various definitions of what they believe the concept of identity is. Some say that identity is how one views himself, others say that identity is how other people in society see one. Most people would agree that identity is the state of being oneself, and showing the same personality traits over time. As you can see, identity is a very imperceptible concept; it is not something tangible that will always remain the same. For this very reason, I am not sure about what my identity really is. Because there is no true and universal meaning of identity, I feel that I have no definite or corporeal identity. My personality always morphs, depending on whom I am talking to. I am a very versatile person, which is a good thing to be able to do, but it is the very thing that is making me confused as to who I am. So many changes occur as I talk to different people and go to different places that I do not know who I really am. First off, I act extremely differently depending on who I am talking to, whether it is a friend, family member, teacher, or stranger. It is a shifty and erratic thing that I will never be able to rely on. Others may find it fairly simple to know their “true identity,” but I feel that there is no such thing; it will always keep changing, due to age, the people one chooses to interact with, and the way one was raised. One can not have a unique identity because after all, one develops personality traits from the people they are surrounded by day to day, like in my case. I am serious because of the adults I interact with, and I am youthful from the younger children I communicate with. I can not hope to ever understand what identity is, but I hope that I can remain conform with the “identity” I possess today, like every other person already
