Every day is a new day and with a new day we all are aging and learning how to embrace change. Do you ever wonder how your life will be when you age? Well there are only few people who are curious about aging and the rest are content with living their life as it is and there is nothing wrong with not wanting to know, but it could be very helpful to inform ourselves and the surrounding people of all the changes that will occur once we age. As my curiosity continues to expand I decided to continue with another course about gerontology and inform myself of the changes that I will face when I age. This course has allowed me to learn and be involved with the elderly and with this assignment it will help me get to know more people.
I recently got the opportunity to meet Daisy who is 93 years old; she is a white female. I met Mrs. Daisy through a friend who works with elderly people. Mrs. Daisy was born in West Virginia and she stated that her life was economically stable as she was growing up. She said, she did not consider herself poor because her family provided what she needed. Daisy said that the

Instead, I was very wrong about older people. They are actually the best people to talk to and be around with. With Mrs. Daisy it was great experience to get to know her because I learn so much, since she has done a lot with her life. Ever since I started learning more about older people it has made me appreciate life more and it makes me want to do everything I can to prepare for my future for when I age. I want to age wisely and gracefully like Mrs. Daisy, I want to have good health and feel alive like she is now. Overall, I loved doing this interview because I got to learn new things and I met someone new. I hope to continue learning about the elderly and find ways to help my community, especially my family members who are
Aging and old age for a long time presented as dominated by negative traits and states such as sickness, depression and isolation. The aging process is not simply senescence most people over the age of 65 are not Senile, bedridden, isolated, or suicidal (Aldwin & Levenson, 1994). This change in perspective led the investigation of the other side of the coin. Ageing is seen as health, maturity and personal Royal growth, self-acceptance, happiness, generatively, coping and acceptance of age-related constraints (Birren & Fisher, 1995). Psychological und...
The effect money has on Daisy is noticed from the beginning. She is married to a wealthy man in which she says she loves. The love for her husband is not the same love that she has had with other men. This love is influenced mainly by the amount of money he has. She has experienced true love, but not with husband or a wealthy man. The story tells us about her love with a poor man when she was younger living in Tennessee. Daisy came from a wealthy family so it was expected of her to marry a wealthy man whether or not she really loved him. Not only did money influence the people that she was interested, but how she looked at anyone that did not have money.
The older person that I interviewed was my great-grandfather, Kay Wilson. He is eighty-three years old and is currently retired, living at home. Wilson was born on February 27, 1934 and raised in Sylacauga, AL by his mother. His father was not active in his life, but his grandparents were his main caretakers growing up.

Daisy's life is full of excitement and wealth, she gets practically everything she desires and feels like she has it all. As a person of high society, she treats those below her with disdain, even her cousin. “What shall we do with ourselves this afternoon.and the day after that, and the next thirty years?” (Fitzgerald 118). The Jazz age has changed Daisy and influenced her to become careless as she seeks empty love, money and pleasure.
Older adults are a very knowledgeable population and have had a lot of life experiences. As people age, things start to change physically, mentally, and socially. It’s important to understand the process of aging, so that older adults can be taken care of properly. I interviewed P.R. who is a 71-year-old male that lives alone in his home. P.R. is a retired coal miner, and is currently living off his social security and savings. He lives close to both his daughter and son, who frequently help him out with things that are needed. P.R. was able to give me a lot of insight about specific challenges that he has experienced in his life that is associated with aging. I will be discussing challenges that P.R experienced physically, mentally,
“Have patients and resistance, mija” my 90 year old great grandmother Elizabeth said. She has been one of my motivational supporters pushing me towards my goals, continuation of my education, and living life. Just one phone call, can’t explain how much I dearly miss her. As part of my gerontology interview assignment I had to ask her a couple of questions. One question was: “what is the most significant world event you have experienced and why?”, but my great-grandmother didn’t mention a world event but her own. She explained that she doesn’t know how to read, nor write. She self-taught herself to write her own name and to this day she still does. In the small town in Mexico in which she resides in long ago, lacked education badly. There were no instructors whom taught in schools in town or her surroundings. Few schools were hours away, but with the lack of sufficient resources such as transportation and in town schools those opportunities were never granted to
I have learned many things in this class, some of them have helped me in many other aspects as well. I have learned a lot about myself and about the aging, and I am assured that after completing this course, I have improved. I have started to feel that my world and my preparation for the world have also improved ever since I have taken this class. Taking this class has taught me different techniques to consider when dealing with aging. This topic was of great interest to me. I was surprised to learn that successful aging is a combination of physical and functional health, high cognitive functioning, and active involvement with society. It was interesting to learn that these factors could lead to a lower risk of disease and disability. As
Late adulthood should be a time in a person's life where they feel fulfilled. They can look back on their memories and be happy with the way they have lived their life. Now, too many elderly people are not satisfied and look at this stage as depressing. Most fear death of either a loved one or for themselves. This topic is interesting to me because elderly people should make the best of their last stage of life. This topic discusses about getting older, the life changes that they go through physically, emotionally, and mentally. We should know more about it so that we can help our family and friends get through one of the best, yet toughest part of our mortal life.
When elderly people move into the last of life’s eight stages of psychosocial development, they enter the ego-integrity-versus-despair stage. This process is defined by looking back over someone’s life, evaluating it, then accepting it. People who become successful in this stage feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Erikson refers to this acceptance as integrity. This differs from generativity because one is accepting the end of their life, instead of accepting where their life will start in a sense of career and self. However, if one is to look back on their life with dissatisfaction, they may feel they have been cheated or missed opportunities. Such individuals will mostly be depressed or angry about the way life turned out and
One branch of psychology is known as lifespan psychology, which is the study of the development of humans from birth until death. The study of a person’s lifespan is used to help other people overcome their developmental challenges through learning about how others deal with the various stages of development. According to Robert S. Feldman (2017) “lifespan development examines the way in which people develop physically, intellectually, and socially.” (p. 1) One of the best sources on how to get through a developmental period in life is to ask someone who has already gone through that phase. Therefore, Linda Peevely agreed to answer a few questions about the different stages she has gone through in her 77 years of life.
Ageing is a continuing life cycle, it is an ongoing developmental event that brings certain changes in one’s own psychological and physical state. It is a time in one's own life where an elderly individual reminisce and reflect, to bask and live on previous accomplishments and begin to finish his life cycle. There is a significant amount of adjusting that requires an elderly individual to be flexible and develop new coping skills to adapt in the changes that are common in their new life. (Dhara & Jogsan, 2013).
Again, there is no actual substance to what she says, but others love when she talks because “her voice is full of money.” This shows she is valuable and like a “king’s daughter” (120). Even in Daisy’s youth “she is the most popular of all the girls” in her town. She is rich, living with her family in a large house with “the largest of lawns” (74).
The present paper illustrates my reflections regarding the article “Memory and Aging: Selected Research Directions and Application Issues”, the third lecture “Psychosocial Issues”, and our class discussion. All of them brought up important issues regarding the psychological health of older adults, however, one theme was common across them: the role of social interaction on cognition and emotion.
After my phone conversation, I was able to meet with her in person. It was a really fruitful and a pleasant experience just as I expected. She was very friendly and open to discuss some more details I was looking for related to my project. For this interview, I decided to switch gears and ask her about her views on some big topics such as cultural diversity and how she was able to fit in as well as her adjustment towards aging. Since I already have most of the details about her first experiences moving to America and finding a profession of her choice, I decided to dive even further into that to keep the conversation going. Some of the questions that I asked her were about how much diversity she witnessed in her work environment as well as if diversity helped shape her social style in any way and what she would do to help create a more inclusive and diverse environment. She told me that it is very important to work with people who are different and that it is not just about culture and religion, but also about working with people who come from different education backgrounds and experiences.
