Learning to further expand my knowledge of how to properly write a college essay has been a fulfilling journey. In high school, advance placement English was the most pivotal class for me because it required me to think and perform on a higher level. I felt as if I could I mastered how to convey my thoughts into a essay, but after receiving my first college English 1101 grade back, I realized I did no master the skill as well as I thought I did. I received an eighty on my first paper, this was a huge shock considering that I received all A’s on all my English papers in high school. My grade was justified considering I made plenty of broad statements like “The color choice used by Rosenbaum is genius”, and did not give further explanation on the statement. Luckily, Professor Gallagher offered extra credit if I submitted a post write reflecting on what I did well and what I can improve on. I used the critiques from my first essay and ensured I did not make those mistakes again. I reached out to my fellow peers and receive beneficial feedback on what to change in my paper. I even took it a step further and signed up for a meeting with the university’s writing center, to help me expand on some ideas. Fortunately, I received the grade of an eighty-four on my second paper, though this is an improvement, I wasn’t satisfied; I knew I could do better. I made major mistakes by making my topic sentences too broad. I completed my post write as usual and I also review my professor’s critiques. I studied how to not make the same mistakes by using ‘Emma’ as a resource tool and correcting many errors ranging from ,subject- verb agreement, proper use of comma, or even how not to plagiarize. The focal point of Chapter 4 of Successful College Writing is on how to critically read and decipher text and visuals. It highlights the importance of not just looking at the surface of the words, but diving into their true meaning. Authors put every word and picture into their work for a reason, and it is your job to ensure that you do not fall victim to biases and false information. It is crucial to learn how to identify author's tones, opinions, and overall purpose in their writings. Learning how to analyze these patterns will better equip you in acquiring accurate information and also not adopting these deceptive techniques yourself.
For my Final Reflection Essay I attempted to focus on the most obvious adjustments I made from writing high school papers to producing college level essays. This approach compelled me to examine a few of the papers I submitted in high school and look back on the steps I took to write them. By reviewing my previous work I realized that during Dr. Kennedys English 111 class I have effectively learned how to apply an outline, utilize research, and incorporate that research into my final paper. English 111 has helped me to understand the importance of the multiple steps of writing a great college level essay by forcing me to complete each step individually. My overall performance in this class has been above average and I have really demonstrated dedication to improvement.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Weak skills that I began the class with have become strong and my strong skills have become stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me greatly to improve my writing techniques. Each essay I was required to write brought its own struggles for me. I had to draw on the information that was presented through the class as well as look to the textbook for guidance. To ensure I did well on each essay I thought about my topic, researched the topic, then began to outline what I wanted to write about. Finally, I would write the essay and submit a rough draft. English 102 has given me the skills and training I need to move on to other classes next semester that will require writing essays. I now have a confidence in my writing abilities that this class has given
At the beginning of the semester, I had a different idea of what is considered as good writing. In my first rough draft for my first essay, “Post-secondary education and cultural backgrounds”, I demonstrated mostly of my preconceived idea of what good writing is suppose to be. I tried to sound intelligent by asking rhetorical questions and using big words improperly. I noticed that there was no harmony and organization on my essay as a whole. I had no idea what MLA was. With the help of the Writing Center and my determination on continually revising my essay, my scattered ideas developed into cohesive statements. I learned the use of topic sentences, thesis, reference page, page number, and other given structures on writing a paper. As I tried to develop my skills to becoming a good writer, my writing and knowledge has slowly grew into the accepted academic text.
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
In one semester of English 101 I have learned so many things about writing. I used to believe that writing was just putting words on paper, but have since learned that writing is much more than that, I now understand that writing is a way of exploring my mind and of making connections with other writers and readers. Over the course of the semester I have been learning to write in a way that uses the skills of reflection, critical thinking, and much more. This semester I learned many new things in my English 1301 class. I took this class last year but I had to drop it because I didn’t have a professor explaining the work to me. And I really didn’t understand what I was doing. At first, I was scared to take this class. During my high school years I wasn’t that good of a writer. I thought this composition class was going to be hard since I sometimes thought it was hard in high school. My writing experience was good and sometimes bad. This semester in the composition class I had many writing strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.

Students should still continue to use their critical thinking reading and writing skills because it will beneficial when they go to college or find jobs. With many different expectations from many college courses, students should try to master their critical reading skills because it will help them analyze and have a more in-depth understanding of the text. In order to improve their writing skills, students must get assistance from their professors, friends or the writing center. By reading aloud repetitively and spotting little mistakes, it will improve a student’s writing. In order to be successful in school and everyday life, students must use these necessary procedures.
Overall I believe this was a great year! At first, of course, it was hard to adjust to the fast pace of high school. However, throughout the year I began to enjoy the challenge of this AATH class and really felt I accomplished a lot. One of my greatest accomplishments was never scoring below a B on a test and usually scoring high A’s! Occasionally, I even scored an 100! I truly enjoyed most units this year in class, but my favorite was trigonometry. Even though this was the last unit we did, I believe it incorporated many skills we had learned over the year. And because of that I wouldn 't even understand the culture it self. I remember One time when my friend was giving me a high five while I was new to the culture I thought he was trying to give me a handshake so everything end up so weird but later on I understand what he was trying to do.But as the time goes on I started to learn and understand it little by little and by that I would automatically understand the culture as well. I would listen to music and watch movies or TV show and learn from it and try to use it while I was communicating. And as I make my way toward fluency in English, I feel like I have more responsibility and opportunities that are coming toward me. By this I would have to study harder and help the people that are close to me. I remember one time on summer school when one of the kids was crying because of bullying. I got up and try to help him while the teacher was asking what has happened. Becoming a good student for most is not an easy task. One may be asking if there is a definite way to distinguish a good student and the answer is it 's merely impossible to say a student is considered “good” based on only one factor. Many people define good students as kids who have the best grade in the class. Since most of the time this is true, grades can only be looked at as a single way of how we define the term “good”. We must remember that even poor students can earn high grades occasionally, thus proving why grades are not the best indicator of a student’s quality.
