Redus Barbershop: Interview Analysis Barbering is an expression of art that is created meticulously and is unique to each individual. According to the National Barber Museum, barbering has been around since 5000 B.C. (2014). That is over 6,000 years ago, so it is obvious that this is a profession that screams longevity. Merriam-Webster defines a barber as “one whose business is cutting and dressing hair, shaving and trimming beards, and performing related services” (2017). That is a precise, simple description, but the world of barbering entails so much more. Barbers are not only seen as people who groom hair, but they are also looked at as psychologists, mentors, and friends. That was the beginning of successful 26-year journey as a business owner, but Tito Redus the barber began back in 1988. To become a successful business owner, Mr. Redus believes, you must study. Not just hitting the books, but you must study other successful entrepreneurs and get behind someone who is willing to help you in your quest to become a successful entrepreneur as well. Thankfully Mr. Redus had just those type of people in his corner. Mr. Redus began his tutelage under another successful barber and entrepreneur by the name of Mr. Walter. During his tenure with Mr. Walter, he instilled the business principles that Mr. Redus still carries with him today. Mr. Walter lived by three philosophies: always be there when you say you will be there, always be honest with the customer if you do not feel you cannot give them exactly what they want, and always be flexible and open to change. Mr. Redus took those directives and applied them to his business practices and added one more: always be willing to reach back and help someone else get their …show more content…
Redus, it is clear that he has developed a winning strategy that has paid off by way of a successful, longstanding barbering business. Once a decision has been made to become an entrepreneur, a plan must be established. In Mr. Redus’ case, his plan to venture out on his own was altered due to the untimely passing of Mr. Walter. Due to Mr. Walter’s passing, Mr. Redus inherited the barbershop in which he worked, renamed it, and thus Redus Barbershop was born. Upon re-establishing this well-known business as Redus Barbershop, Mr. Redus employed two more up and coming barbers, Mr. Bobby Redus, his brother, and Mr. Ramone Collier. Mr. Redus wanted to start reaching back immediately, and because competition was almost non-existent at this point, it was fairly easy to establish a good reputation and dominate this market in small town Athens. I learned from Mr. Redus that you cannot just become complacent when things are going good because change is inevitable. People usually follow the popular trend, and once it was noticed that Redus Barbershop essentially monopolized the barbering market in Athens, other entrepreneurs followed in his footsteps. Of course, as Mr. Redus stated, you have to roll with the punches. Mr. Redus began to think back to Mr. Walter philosophies, and always made sure he was there when he was supposed to be there. That one rule really stuck out to me. It says I am dependable, and you can count on me. Basically, be a man of your word.
Although society claims that we are in the age where there is gender equality, it is clear that women are still not of equal standing than men. In our society, women are of lower status than men. Such as in the workplace, a male employee’s project proposal is favored over a female employee’s proposal because a male superior believes that women cannot construct ideas as well as male employees. This is a result of how our culture has influence our view that women are less superior than men. Our male dominant culture taught us that women are not as capable as men are and that between the two genders, the man is the superior.

As the glass door opens, the din from Second Street fades from your ears. The clean crisp cut of scissors, the flick of combs through wet hair, the buzz of electric clipping shears, and the occasional blast of air from a blow dryer captivate your sense of sound. Joe, a large, bald man, wearing an aqua T-shirt and blue jeans tied up with an old brown leather belt, gives his customary greeting, “Howdy there,” to a man who has just entered. The sign above Joe’s mirror reads: “Hair cuts—ten dollars, Seniors—eight dollars.” It is Saturday morning, and at Leo’s Barber Shop business is brisk. Joe and two other barbers are working at a fast clip, keeping their eyes on the scalps of the customers and periodically throwing quick glances to the line that is forming in the waiting area. Hector, wearing a maroon wind-breaker and baseball cap, is putting an apron on a kid to the right of Joe. Chris is trimming a man’s sideburns, leveling her green, contact-lens covered eye to the shears. Four chairs near the entrance are occupied by men of various sorts. Some are reading newspapers or magazines, while others sit looking out the front window. One man clad in denim is standing outside the shop with a cigarette held to his mouth. The barbers at Leo’s have their work cut out for them today.

My dad has a best-friend, who has a sister that manages her own salon. Over the summer of 2015, I volunteered at Great Clips (her salon) and got to watch the employees cut and style hair. I was also a hosts; I scheduled appointments for people and cleaned around the hair stations after a fresh cut. The women
Ever avoid getting a haircut because you can’t afford them? A haircut ranges from $10-$30 depending on the quality of the haircut. Most men enjoy the satisfaction they receive from coming out of the barbershop looking and feeling fresh. Sadly, the freshness of the haircut only lasts about a good week. Instead of going to the barbershop every week and wasting $25, you can easily invest in your own pair of clippers and scissors to cut your own hair. Cutting your own hair can be done at home, preferably in the restroom where you have access to a sink and mirrors. Here are a few steps that will save you money and keep you looking fresh by cutting your own hair. (This step-by-step tutorial is specifically for a low-skin fade.)

Archeological studies reveal that haircutting and hairstyling were practiced in some form as early as the glacial age. The simple but effective implements used at the dawn of history were shaped from sharpened flints, oyster shell, or bone. Animal sinew or strips of hide were used to tie the hair back, or as adornment. As a previous cosmetology student, I have learn to master the art and technique of sectioning, blunt haircut, and checking a haircut. However, you should have on hand your shears, all-purpose combs, shampoo cape, your stray bottle fill with water, hair clips and blow dryer.
Within the mostly Hispanic neighborhood Washington Heights there is a multitude of beauty salons and beauty supplies stores. As I am fairly familiar to the area I chose to observe the social interactions of Dominican women getting their hair done instead of my initial reaction to the neighborhood. Starting at Nine am on the rainy Thursday, I observed five women each choosing their respective hairdresser and proceeding to do their hair. The women whom attend the salon are well dressed;with heels, jewelry, and stellar outfits(as if going to brunch instead of sitting under a hood dryer for 2 hours). Once entering the salon they all immediately begin to speaking Spanish, regardless of fluency. Each
