Red Scarf Girl, by Ji-Li Jiang, is a memoir about the Cultural Revolution. I chose this book so I could learn from someone who had experienced Cultural Revolution and not from a historian who did not face the terror of being labeled as anti-Communist. I decided to take AP World History because, as a college-level course, it will challenge me to become a more efficient note-taker, studier, and time-manager. The focus on smaller details that influenced an event instead focus on the big event itself will be more engaging. In the beginning of the book, Ji-Li Jiang is offered an opportunity to audition for the Central Liberation Army Arts Academy; she first learns about her black background when her father forbids her from auditioning. In Red Scarf Girl, Ji-li is faced with the challenge of her life when she has to choose between her family, and a family figure, her country, although she really had known since the day she was eliminated from the audition she loved her family more than anything or anyone. She shows her diverging opinions forced by peer pressure throughout the book in the beginning, middle, and end. Her scrambled thoughts have to be pieced back together slowly, and are forced to make detours through the revolution, but finally are able to bubble up to the top and come out to the world. In this way Ji-Li discovers not the mind swept mind of Mao Ze Dong, but her true self, ,and is able to see that she could never do anything to hurt her family, nor break away from it, and that no one could take her family away.
It is said that when a man returns from war he is forever changed. In the short story, “The Red Convertible,” Louise Erdrich demonstrates these transformations through the use of symbolism. Erdrich employs the convertible to characterize the emotional afflictions that war creates for the soldier and his family around him by discussing the pre-deployment relationship between two brothers Henry and Lyman, Lyman's perception of Henry upon Henry's return, and Henry’s assumed view on life in the end of the story.

In the novel “Red Scarf Girl” by Ji Li Jiang, the theory of Marxism is at play as Ji Li strives to help the reader understand the impact that the Cultural Revolution in China had on her family and on her country. By using the struggle between the social classes, Ji Li helps the reader gain a greater understanding of the negative impact that a corrupt government can have and often times does have on the lives of its people. As the reader moves throughout the novel, it makes sense why, by the end of the book, Ji Li Jiang would call China her country but America her home, for she came to understand just how much she appreciates freedom.
Revolution is Not a Dinner Party is about a nine year old Chinese girl named, Ling, and her parents live in China of 1972, while Mao Zedong is chairman. When a political officer named, comrade Li, moved inside of her apartment in her father’s study Ling starts to notice a lot of things happening around. PTSD, also known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, can cause change and bring about pain and stress in many different forms to the families of the victims of PTSD. These changes can be immense and sometimes unbearable. PTSD relates to the characters relationship as a whole after Henry returns from the army and it caused Henry and Lyman’s relationship to crumble. Amy Tan's "A Pair of Tickets," especially, explores the relationship of setting to place, heritage, and ethnic identity. Jing-Mei Woo, the main character, has trouble accepting that she is Chinese, despite her heritage. Jing-Mei Woo believed, at fifteen, that she had no Chinese whatsoever below her skin. If anything, she perceives herself as Caucasian; even her Caucasian friends agreed that she "was as Chinese as they were." Her mother, however, told her differently, "It's in your blood, waiting to be let go."

Chinese Revolution is about making the entire country into Communists and killing each and one the people who hates Mao Tse-Tung. Mao Tse-Tung is the leader of China at this time who believes in equality and everyone should have the same rights. The Red Guards is a military group in which includes a group of children that eliminates the Chinese population due to hatred for Mao. If any of these events happen to our generation, most youth are smart enough to know that Mao is a bad leader and killing innocent people by the case of bitterness for Mao is wrong. The Chinese youth got swept up in the Cultural Revolution by Mao because the youth were easy to persuade into doing something. To expand this idea further, the Chinese youth weren’t old enough, not on this specific age, to realize whether Mao’s actions were virtuous or inaccurate. On the other hand, they thought that working for Mao and joining the Red Guards will help their country out, but they never knew the truth behind Mao’s plans. The truth about the Cultural Revolution was to kill anybody that gets in the way of Mao’s plans and destroying all the old buildings so that it would be replaced with new buildings or reconstruct the old buildings to become brand new again. In addition, the Chinese youth had no idea that joining the Red Guards will give a highly chance of getting killed. In other words, the adults were smarter than the youth because joining the Red Guards means the opposite of helping the country out. Mao just made them think that joining will help their country, even though it was the other way around like someone apologizing to their neighbor in which manipulating their minds that they’re now cool, but they were still rude to them afterwards. The political leaders of Cuba and China gained support by attracting specific types of followers, motivation and the utilization of propaganda. These leaders had campaigns targeting specific types of people to help gain power and to get support for their revolutionary ideas. The same mindset was in place when these leaders used propaganda and used their own motivation to get into people’s heads. The leader of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Mao Zedong, campaigned and targeted the younger generation of society.
Considering communist China's recent increased aggression, and deteriorating relations between them and the United States, the dangers of this novel must be weighed carefully. It is often taught in schools, despite the fact that it promotes un-American and anti-capitalist views. With today's political tension, do we really want our youth exposed to literature that encourages them to mistrust the government and supports a communist revolution?
I decided to do my final paper in the form of an extended review. With that, I chose the book, “Revolution, Rebellion, Resistance: The Power of Story” by Eric Selbin.. We started focusing on this book later on in this semester, but the book was interesting so I decided to choose it. Being that Sociology is my minor, I was all for learning about new methods of sociology and movements. This book sort of sticks out from the very diverse studies of revolution that have been published before this one came out. The author takes a different approach of explaining revolutions by incorporating the use of stories. The author uses these stories and analyzes them to come up with answers based around revolutions. Some of the questions he take a shot at explaining are things like why revolutions happen in one place and not the other, why do they happen at one time period and not another time period and why certain people affected. Selbin explains and touches on the three main words; revolution, resistance, and rebellion. Though the three words are categories themselves, he also have them divided into four other categories. Other important aspects and keywords that he focus on are mimesis, memory, and myth. These are used to show the connection with revolutions as times went on and on. The words revolution, resistance comes form Greco-Roman revolutionary leaders and ancient myths. They also are from the memory of legendary local events and revolutions and movements that involves certain parts of the society. Selbin Uses stories, and focuses on society and culture to bring out a different view on the connection between revolutions and individuality. He uses more of an agency approach.
