There are many ways that person can determine if someone is a risk-taker or reckless. A reckless person is one who is careless, selfish, or dangerous. On the other hand a risk-taker is a person that is careful, heroic, or has a goal set in mind. Although they bear some minor similarities, the difference between being a risk-taker and being reckless are pronounced.
Floyd Collins was a man with a goal set in mind and was an ambitious man making him a risk-taker. Floyd Collins was a poor Kentucky farmer who had discovered the Crystal Caves eight years ago. Collins had a goal in mind to find a new attraction to draw more tourists. In the article Trapped in a Cave, Foiled by a circus it demonstrates to us that Floyd was a risk taker. On February
2, 1925 a journalist wrote ” to attract more tourists to the area Floyd went looking for New Caves, and that’s when he found Sand Cave. Then his luck gave out, and here we are, waiting for Floyd to come out.” During this time of stress there was reckless people who were being selfish and tried to take advantage of this situation. “The mayor and his minion are doing their utmost to ferment excitement about this crises and keep hucksters happy. It sometimes seems as if they are more interested in bringing attention to their town than in rescuing Floyd.” Although in between all of those people there was also another risk-taker named William Burke Miller. In trapped in a Cave, Foiled by a circus a journalists wrote on February 3, 1925 “William Burke Miller, a young louisville newspaperman whom everyone calls ”skeets”, squeezed down the narrow passageway and made contact with Floyd’’. Miller was the person who would be bringing down food and water to Collins when he was stuck inside the Sand Caves. William Miller was a man that was heroic, careful and brave by risking his life just to bring food to Floyd Collins and to keep him company while he was stuck . There are many different types of reckless people that can be careless or dangerous to people. An example of reckless people are distracted drivers. Distracted drivers can be distracted by many different things while driving. In San Francisco Chronicle Study: Distractions Cause Most Car Crashes it gives us plenty of different examples of things that can cause distracted drivers. For example, cell phones are the biggest distraction. In a study made about drivers they tracked drivers and studied their reports. “.. they tracked 241 drivers, who were involved in 82 crashes of various degrees of seriousness-15 were reported to be police- and 761 near-crashes. The airbag deployed in three instances. The project analyzed nearly 2 million miles were driven.
There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself. Great followership is a reflection of great leadership. In this, the follower is just as important as the leader in the relationship. Many great leaders have asserted that a leader with even a modicum of understanding of what drives their subordinates can take their organization to previously undreamt-of heights in creativity and productivity. Collins does not disabuse us of this notion, he does however add that the follower is indispensable agent in this interplay between leader and follower.
Adversity. A time of misfortune or distress. It’s like facing a problem that is super difficult to overcome. Many people think that they have gone through the worst—that they they have faced the most problems. But have they met Henrietta Lacks, Douglas Mawson, and Phineas Gage? Henrietta Lacks, Douglas Mawson, and Phineas Gage are all amazing people who have gone through the worst for the consideration of science. Doctors took healthy cells from Henrietta Lacks without her consent, and they then used them for research to make millions of dollars. Going on a hard, difficult journey was the story of Douglas Mawson; he also lost his only friends and almost died a few times. Phineas Gage’s story is also filled with adversity, in which he had an iron rod shoot through his head while staying conscious. Out of all of these people, however, Phineas Gage endured the most adversity for many reasons.
One of the most important elements in Richard Wright’s The Man Who Lived Underground is Wright’s careful use of sensory descriptions, imagery, and light to depict Fred Daniels’ experiences both above and below ground. Wright’s uses these depictions of Fred Daniels underground world to create incomplete pictures of the experiences he has and of the people he encounters. These half-images fuel the idea that The Man Who Lived Underground is a dark and twisted allusion to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.
The distinction between whether an individual is to be considered a hero or a coward lies in their death. The difference is the impact, and the impact differs for a hero than a coward. When a hero dies, the magnitude of the impact on society is greater as society reflects on all the positive achievements that have been accomplished. Their death is more of a rebirth of a soul, the rebirth of hope. However, a coward dies many times before their actual death. The mistakes and tragic falls are considered to be these multiple deaths. “The valiant never taste of death but once”, a quote said by William Shakespeare. Throughout the novel of Into the Wild by Jon Krakeur, Chris McCandless is thought to be a courageous hero by many. However, it is not recalled for a courageous person to take on the role of a wanderlust knowing the result is highly fatal. Walt and Billie McCandless, Chris’s parents, have been making funeral arrangements for the last two days, but in a way, they have been making funeral arrangements for the last two years. That is how long it has been since they have seen their son. This tragedy has no one to blame, except for the young man himself. Chris ran away from facing all that was bothering him. It is understandable to feel immense pressure in life sometimes however, the way he went about dealing with this pressure broke the hearts of his parents and his loved ones and got himself killed. Chris Mccandless is to be considered a selfish coward because of the choices he made in dealing with the problems he had to deal with in his life.
“We all have heard about ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary situations. They act courageously or responsibly, and their efforts are described as if they opted to act that way on the spur of the moment... I believe many people in those situations actually have made decisions years before.” (Chesley B. Sullenberger, Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters) Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III; Husband, Father, Captain and Hero. Sully Sullenberger is an author, safety advocate and a hero. Sully is known for the “Miracle on the Hudson” that saved many lives one day in January 2003 when he successfully landed a plane on the Hudson River.
A Lesson before Dying, the 1994 novel by Ernest J. Gaines, is the gripping and evocative story of a young man accused of a crime and sentenced to death by electrocution. In the fictional town of Bayonne, Louisiana, the narrator, Grant Wiggins, attends the trail of Jefferson, a twenty-one-year-old uneducated black field worker who is charged with the murder of a white storekeeper. Jefferson claims that two of his acquaintances, Brother and Bear, shot Alcee Grope, the storekeeper. Jefferson’s lawyer rest his argument on the idea that Jefferson lacks the intelligence to commit the murder and sentencing him to death would be like putting a “hog” (18) in the electric chair. In malice of the so called defense, the all-white jury finds Jefferson guilty.
As history is written, people will analyse it. These opinions range from support to the actions taken to extreme disagreement with what has happened. In some cases, people will use this to try and write the next chapter of history. One of these people is Chris Hedges. Since 2007 he has written a multitude of essays that take a deep look at American foreign and domestic policy over the years. His overall conclusion is that there needs to be some sort of revolution in the United States to solve its problems. While I agree with the majority of his analysis, I do not agree with his conclusion. I will examine two of the essays he wrote, to call to attention my specific complaints. I will also be commenting on two of the sources he uses in each essay.
Death is a concept that people find hard to accept. You keep asking yourself “what if” as if it’s going to make your loved one come back. “What if I had been there? What if someone had talked him out of it? What if…?” You always ask yourself these questions, but never get an answer. I find myself still asking these questions even though I know they will never be answered. Death takes the ones we love the most too soon. Unfortunately, I know this feeling all too well.
Donovan is a mischievous boy at a normal school, one day he hits a statue which breaks and sends a metal ball crashing into the school gym. Donovan is caught by the superintendent, but there was a mix up and he was sent to a gifted school. Donovan in the story Ungifted is mischievous because he is reckless, impulsive, and mindless.
Preston Brooks, a cowardly scoundrel, committed one of the most evil crimes that had ever occurred in the Senate since before that time period. Brooks beat Sumner with his cane on the floor of the Senate, unjustifiably, in response to parts of Sumner's speech that he found disturbing. One of the topics Sumner discussed was slavery. He told the audience of the torture slaves went through, such as “compel(ling) fellowmen to unpaid toll, separate(ing) husband and wife, and sell(ing) little children at the auctions...” This accurate description of slavery life showed how great of an evil slavery really was, and why it should have been abolished. The cowardly scoundrel, known as Brooks by name, had no real reason to cane Sumner. In fact, he could
Although Chris McCandless experienced many different things and entertaining things on his journey, the thrilling adventure led to his own demise. It was Chris McCandless/Alex Supertramp’s fault that he died because it was his actions that led to the consequences he had. “No longer would he be called Chris McCandless; he was now Alexander Supertramp, master of his own destiny.”(23) This shows that by changing his name and heading out on his adventure that he knew what he was getting himself into. It also shows that he wanted to be the master of his future and that he thought he was prepared for what would happen.
Risky play is an important part of children’s play and children have shown a natural desire of outdoor risky play in the early years of ages (Brussoni, Olsen, Pike & Sleet, 2012). Risky play refers to play that allows children to feel excited and may lead to physical injury (Sandseter, 2007). In the video Adventurous play-Developing a culture of risky play, the interviewer Neville had discussed risky play with five educators. By consulting from this video, this report will provide rationales which are for creating opportunities for risky play in the child care centres, explain how to achieve the outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework through planning for risky play. It then attempts to analyse the observational learning in Bandura’s
...e shockingly inept. Under Gerald's informal command, the operation lacked any organization or coherence. In addition, it is evident that the natives had no idea what they were doing. They not only failed to rig up a feeding tube and portable telephone for Floyd, but also continually entered Sand Cave, causing the second cave-in. I'm sure that almost everyone can understand the natives' motivations; still, it is important to admit and learn from their mistakes so as not to repeat them in the future. No matter how much you want to help a loved one, it is essential that you leave their care to qualified professionals. As the natives of Cave City learned the hard way, by trying to help you may unwittingly cause harm.
To take a chance, one is accepting the possibilities of what could happen from the choice they have made.
The main form of reckless driving that a large amount of people are aware of is drinking and driving. When an individual is under the influence while driving, it can become detrimental in regards to other lives, not just to the individual behind the wheel because it impairs the driver 's ability to make quick and smart decisions. Within the last year there was a 15 year old boy who had lost his life due to driving under the influence. Somehow the boy had managed to veer off the road and wrap his car around a pole and into a Whataburger, not only taking his own life but also risking the lives of anyone who was inside the restaurant. The fact that he was drinking impaired his ability to drive, thus resulting in not having control of his vehicle. Another major issue of reckless driving is speeding. Many times drivers will reach dangerous speeds on the road as the result of racing. Once reaching the high speeds, the individual is risking the amount of control they have over the car. When lacking control of the vehicle the said person is
